From the Desk of the Interim ADFA

In academia, May is the month of com- mencement and celebration as the University confers academic degrees to students who have graduated from their respec- tive programs. This is the time of the year when we celebrate accom- plishments and mark

new beginnings as graduates take their next steps in life’s journey into the fu-

ture. We wish each and every IUSD graduate immense success and much happiness in their future endeavors.

The Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) will embark on its own new journey next month when Dr. Lisa Lang begins her tenure as

Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs on June 6th. As Dean M u r d o c h - K i n c h announced at the April 27th Town Hall, Dr. Lang is the

first hire from among our intensive IUSD faculty recruitment efforts. Dr.

Lang joins the faculty as a tenured professor in the Department of Prosthodontics. Dr. Lang is an expe- rienced educator, administrator, and well-respected academic prostho- dontist. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and currently serves as the Presi- dent of the Academy of Prosthodon- tics. Her educational background includes a BS in Dental Hygiene and DDS both from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. In addition, she completed a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from Columbia University, a Certificate and MS degree in Pros- thodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center - San

an MBA from Rawls College at Tex- as Tech University. Beginning her academic career as a Clinical Assis- tant Professor at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, Dr. Lang rose through the academic ranks at several insti- tutions, first achieving tenure as an Associate Professor at UTHSCSA in 2006. Throughout her career, Dr.

Lang has been actively engaged in teaching, research, and service. She has held several administrative posi- tions, including Assistant Dean for Clinical Education at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Dental Medicine, chair of the department of Comprehensive Care at CWRU, and most recently served as chair of General Practice and Materials Science and chair of Re- storative Sciences and Prosthodon- tics at the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Dentistry. Dr.

Lang has extensive experience and achievements as a dental educator and mentor within her discipline and has been recognized for teaching excellence, most recently receiving the Apostle Teaching Award from the OSU College of Dentistry in 2021. She has garnered grants and disseminated her scholarly work through invited presentations at national and international forums and through journal and book publi- cations throughout her academic career. We are indeed fortunate to have such an accomplished academic leader join the IU School of Dentis- try to serve as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.

In the coming months we will have many more new faculty joining our School in multiple departments.

OFA is working diligently to com- plete processes to hire faculty in ad- ministrative units

including Oral and Maxillofacial Sur- gery and Hospital Dentistry; Pros- thodontics; Oral Pathology, Medi- cine, and Radiology; Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care;

and Periodontology. However, our recruitment efforts will not end but continue to refortify and fill the ongoing needs of our teaching, re- search, service, and patient care missions. I would like to acknowledge the OFA team for their arduous work and support of these recruitment efforts and candi- date interviews as well as the Search and Screen Committee chairs and members for their diligence and active engagement. This work can- not be accomplished nor sustained without your contributions and dedication.

There are so many events, activi- ties, and accomplishments to recog- nize, it is difficult to mention and acknowledge them all. However, I would like to add my

congratulations to our promotion and/

or tenure recipients for the 2020-2021 cycle. Their award of

promotion and/or tenure represents work and achievement years in the making, supported by evidence, and substantiated by multiple layers of internal and external review. I ex- tend my sincere congratulations to Dr. Frank Lippert for promotion to Professor with Tenure, Dr. Wei-

S h a o Lin for promo- tion to Profes- s o r , and Dr. Chandler Walker for pro- motion to Associate Professor with Tenure. Please see the article inside this newsletter on page three for further details of this accomplish-

Someone once said, “A good friend listens to your adven- tures. Your best friend makes them with you.” Clinical assis- tant professor Dr. Brenda Valliere, who retires on May 31, undoubted- ly has been more than a dentist, educator, administrator, and colleague. As early as 1978, her journey (adventures) with us be- gan when she accepted the offer to join IU Fort Wayne (IUFW) as a limited term lec- turer. Prior to then she successfully matricu- lated through IUFW’s Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene program, graduating with distinction. Dr. Valliere departed Indiana University to attain her DDS from Ohio State University School of Dentistry (1986).

She returned to IU Fort Wayne that same year as faculty. Dr. Valliere would go on to

hold the positions of visiting assistant profes- sor, interim director of the Dental Laborato- ry Technology Program, director of the Dental Hygiene Program and supervising dentist of the IUFW Dental Hygiene Clinic.

Loved and enjoyed by students, faculty and the community, Dr. Valliere has always had a heart for service, actively participating in various University-level committees (e.g., IUFW Faculty Council), college level activi- ties (e.g., Annual Student Success Celebra- tion, and department level activities (e.g., Dental Education Awards and Recognition Ceremony Committee).

Clinical Assistant Professor Nichole Fick, who also departs the IUFW Dental Hygiene program on May 31, has been one of those special best

friends too. Her journey with IUFW Dental Hygiene began with her as a student who would receive both her Associate of Science (2003) and Bachelor of Science (2014) de- grees in Dental Hygiene through the Fort Wayne Program.

Professor Fick’s heart to make a difference and help create stories of professional devel- opment and recognition moved her to serve on committees such as the Dental Hygiene Promotions Committee, the Dental Hygiene Alumni Luncheon Committee, and, as a member of the Indiana Dental Hygienists’

Association, on the Continuing Education Committee and the Hygienists’ of Indiana Political Action Committee.

Join us in extending best and warm wishes to Dr. Valliere and Professor Fick as they create more journeys and inspire ours!

Are you travelling soon? The Office of Faculty Affairs can support your travel to national confer- ences or programs for specific training or faculty develop- ment, related to evidenced-based dentistry, online education, or peer mentoring group development. We also support faculty travel to national confer-

ences when serving as an officer of a national organization or as a presenter at a national meeting.

The Office of Faculty Affairs will consider applications for funding of conference regis- tration, hotel accommodations, and travel expenses in partnership with the respective department for full-time IUSD faculty. Fund- ing will be provided as the budget allows and preference will be given to faculty members who have not been previously funded. To apply for support, please complete and sub-

mit the appropriate Travel Support Applica- tion 30 days prior to the conference. The application forms can be located on the K drive. You will need to go to the FACAFR Public folder, then to the Travel Request Forms folder to find the application forms.

The Digital Gardener Facul- ty Fellows Program pro- vides a semester-long op- portunity for faculty to learn to integrate digital literacy into their courses, teaching, and work with students. Through collabo- ration with other Fellows, participants will be a key factor in developing a university-wide culture committed to digital literacy, creativi- ty, and learning.

The Faculty Fellows program is one compo- nent of the Digital Gardener Initiative, a fac- ulty-driven commitment to connect mem- bers of the IU community working in digital literacy. The initiative aims to share best practices and grow successful programs across the university to prepare students for an increasingly digital world.

The Digital Gardener Faculty Fellows Pro- gram has four goals:

 Create Experts—Prepare faculty mem- bers to understand data literacy, im- prove digital communication skills, gain experience with digital technology, and become savvy digital consumers.

 Support Students—Give faculty mem- bers the tools to empower students entering today’s workforce with greater digital agility, which leads to greater access to job opportunities.

 Promote Digital Literacy—Encourage faculty members to study the impact of pedagogical strategies and digital tech- nology as they’re being used by peers across the university.

 Build a Community—Connect faculty members so that they can foster their own community networks to help de- velop digital confidence and promote digital literacy and creativity.

The deadline to submit an application for the fall 2022 cohort is May 10, 2022, and applicants will be notified of application sta- tus by May 20.

Digital Gardener Faculty Fellows will re- ceive: a $500 stipend paid into a university account for conference travel and teaching/

research support; personalized support from senior Digital Gardener Fellows and UITS Learning Technologies staff supporting the Digital Gardener Initiative; a designated co- hort for community engagement, peer feed-

back, and idea development; and access to colleagues exploring how to integrate digital literacy skills in their work.

The program is open to full-time faculty (or part-time faculty who are full-time IU em- ployees) from all IU campuses. Participants must fulfill the following requirements:

 Participate in regular virtual meetings.

These will tentatively be held on August 26, September 9, September 23, Octo- ber 7, October 21, November 4, and November 18. There will be a morning and afternoon option on each of these dates.

 Commit to integrate digital literacy practices into curriculum.

Experience with digital literacies or compe- tency with digital tools or technology is not required. Applicants should have a desire to increase opportunities for students to build digital literacy and creativity and improve students’ digital expression and engagement.
