I’m very excited about our Faculty Recognition Dinner, which will be held on June 20 at the Eiteljorg Mu- seum. This inaugural dinner will acknowledge our faculty and their accomplishments. While all of our faculty contribute to the teaching,
research, and service mis- sion of IUSD, we are high- lighting signifi-
cant efforts and accomplishments.
Our information comes from Digital Measures, so we recognize that there may be gaps in the information we have and the work our faculty do based on the accurateness of reporting. Therefore, I’d like to acknowledge this and apologize in advance for any potential oversight.
The registration for the dinner will be separate from the Faculty Devel- opment registration, so please make sure to register for the dinner so that you may join us in this celebra- tion. I look forward to seeing every- one there.
Dr. Neil Pinney of IUSD’s division of C o m p r e h e n s i v e Care in the depart- ment of Biomedical Sciences and Com- prehensive Care on May 31 went from the clinic into retirement, after more than 39 years of service to our students, patients, staff and faculty. A Faculty Member of the Year and Distinguished Facul- ty Award for Teaching recipient, Dr.
Pinney’s contributions to IUSD were felt and recognized far beyond both his service as a Comprehensive Care clinic director and clinical assistant professor and his committee partici-
sessment Committee, CODA Pa- tient Services Subcommittee, Search and Screen Committees, and the Admissions Committee, to name a few of the many forms of institution- al and organizational service Dr.
Pinney engaged in to help fulfill the mission and vision of IUSD.
Dr. Steven Blanchard, tenured professor and director of Graduate Periodontics in the department of Periodontology, on June 30 also will be entering retire-
ment. During his more than 20 years of service, Dr.
Blanchard’s recog- nition included
Teaching Award, Outstanding Teaching of the Year Award, and Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics Award recipient. The latter was bestowed by the Ameri- can Academy of Periodontology. A testament to the character, compas- sion and commitment Dr. Blanchard brought to his role at IUSD, the American Academy of Periodontolo- gy also awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation for Rescue Efforts at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
Drs. Pinney and Blanchard men- tored many students and faculty during their careers. All of us at IUSD wish them the best in their

Congratulations to Dr. Ste- ven Blanchard, professor, department of Periodontolo- gy, on receiving the 2023 American Academy of Perio- dontology (AAP) Outstand- ing Periodontal Educator Award, which is to be pre- sented at the AAP meeting this fall in Austin.
The Outstanding Periodontal Educator Award recognizes an exemplary periodontal faculty member whose career demonstrates excellence in teaching and is an inspiration to students. This is the second full time fac-
ulty member from the Periodontology to be recognized with this award. Dr. E. Brady Hancock was recognized in 2011 with the award.
Congratulations also go to Professor Nan- cy Mann, who recently re- tired from the Dental Hy- giene program in the Divi- sion of Allied Dental Educa- tion (IUFW), who will be honored by the dental hy- giene and campus communi- ty of IU School of Dentistry – Fort Wayne with a named scholarship. This reception
was held on June 6, 2023 in the Walb Union Classic Ballroom in Fort Wayne.
Congratulations to Dr. Chandni Batra, clinical assistant professor,
department of Periodontol- ogy, who was presented by Dr. Vanchit John with an AAP 2023 Educator Award.
This award is a collaborative effort between the AAP and
individual schools in the country. Every year, department chairs are asked to nominate one of the faculty members in their depart- ment for this recognition.

The IU School of Dentistry will have three new faculty joining its team on July 1. Dr.
Toshiki Nagai, chief resident in the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics, was recruited by our depart- ment of Prosthodontics, hav- ing graduated at the end of June (2023) with a MSD and

Prior to coming to IUSD, Dr. Nagai worked as a dentist in a private practice in Miyazaki, Japan after serving as a dentist and intern in Keio University Hospital’s department of Dental and Oral Surgery (Tokyo, Japan). He attained his DDS from Kyushu University (Fukuoka, Japan), where he was class valedic- torian. Among other honors he has received is the Johnson F. Johnston Society’s I. Lester Furnas Graduate Prosthodontics Award for Academic Excellence, the John F. Johnston Performance Award, and the King Saud Uni- versity Travel Award for Best Clinical Case Report. During the past year he has been a teaching assistant within our Prosthodontics department. In his new role as clinical assis-

Dr. Halide Namli Kilic, an oral and maxillo- facial surgeon, will be the newest clinical assistant professor for the department of Periodontology. Dr. Kilic
earned her PhD and DDS from Cukurova University (Adana, Turkey), where she also served as a resi- dent and an instructor in that institution’s depart-
ment of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. One of her emphases while in the position of instructor was student mentoring, She will continue building on helping students devel- op through mentoring throughout her lead clinical assistant professor responsibilities, which include didactic and clinical instruction
within the graduate periodontics program as well as for predoctoral students.
Dr. Aline Castilho will be coming to our department of Pediatric Dentistry from Pediatric Dentistry at Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campi- nas (Piracicaba, SP, Brazil), where she earned her PhD (Pediatric Dentistry) and was visiting assistant professor for that school’s DDS program, Residence Program, and Grad- uate Program. Before joining Pediatric Den- tistry at Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, she had served as an assistant professor at the University of Sagrado Coração (Bauru, SP, Brazil), where she earned both her DDS and her MS (Oral Biology) degrees. In her awaiting assistant professor role with IUSD, Dr. Castilho’s teaching responsibilities will include clinical instruction for pre-doctoral students, stu- dent counseling and mentoring, support of evidence-based learning and clinical care, and work with post graduate program pediatric dentistry residents.
