From the Desk of the Interim ADFA

The outcome of Groundhog Day, February 2, 2022, set the stage for the start of February a t I U S D . Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, forecasting six more weeks of winter, as the legend portends. And it seems the furry critter was right, as the next two days brought winter storm Landon aka the Groundhog snowstorm. The precipitation ranged from rain, ice, sleet, and snow Thursday and Friday as we all experienced in varying degrees around the city and state. The flexi- bility developed over the COVID- 19 pandemic allowed us to continue our educational and work activities through Zoom and other virtual learning modalities while we looked on at the beauty of the blanket of snow and then set to shoveling it to prepare for the coming week.

The Office of Faculty Affairs faculty recruitment efforts continue.

With the first interviews and presentations completed for the position of Associate Dean for Fac- ulty Affairs, the search begins its next phase to vet the top candi- dates for potential offer. The Search and Screen Committees for the Associate Dean for Diversity and Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Education and Academic Affairs are moving toward candidate review, prescreen interviews and before too long, in-person inter- views and presentations. In addition to the Associate Dean positions, we have seven other searches at vari- ous stages of progress. These in- clude the Evansville Clinic Director position, and faculty positions in the

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry; Periodontics;

Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radi- ology; and Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care. Several other faculty positions are in preparation and will soon be posted and launched.

As many of you know, February brought a personnel change to OFA with the retirement of Ms. Shelley Hall, Administrative Assistant. Shel- ley, an outstanding member of the OFA team, excelled in the support and facilitation of the Promotion and Tenure Committee, P&T pro- cesses, systems, and scheduling. Her organizational skills and expertise in navigating the various IU data bases and platforms were invaluable to the office and beyond. She was inte- gral to many faculty support ser- vices including the Peer Mentoring Group, the Awards Committee and arranging countless faculty develop- ment mentoring meetings, and facili- tating faculty travel and meeting support. I first worked with Shelley as Director of Faculty Develop- ment, joining the office in that ca- pacity in 2012. During that time, OFA began making real strides to- ward improving the internal support processes for promotion and or tenure and providing programs for faculty to learn more about academ- ic advancement. Shelley was a part- ner in these endeavors, and we benefited from her talent to bring these enhancements to fruition. I am so glad to have had the chance to work with Shelley once again before she retired. I am grateful for her many con- tributions and, like all of you, I wish her all the best in retirement. She

Speaking of promotion and tenure, we are in the first phase of the 2022 - 2023 cycle with several faculty members preparing their materials to apply for promotion and/or ten-

u r e w h i l e 2021- 2 0 2 2 candi- dates are undergoing review at the campus level. Other OFA February activities include the annual review of faculty, the faculty competency verification process, and the selec- tion of the Trustees Teaching Award winners by the Awards Committee.

February also brings the celebra- tion of Black History Month and a new school-level program organized and launched by the Office of Diver- sity and Student

Affairs and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, Cele- brating Diversity and You in 2022.

Dr. Vanchit John, Interim Associate Dean for Diversity and Student Affairs, has announced an exciting schedule of speakers who will be presenting virtually from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm on February 14th, 15th, 17th, and 18th. The featured speak- ers respectively include Drs. Beverly Crawford and Amy Hiller, Universi- ty of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Shaun Matthews, Chair, Department of OMFS and Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs, Dr. Elizabeth Simpson, Clinical As- sistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Compre- hensive Care, and Dr. Cecil White, University of Florida, College of Dentistry. I am looking forward to these presentations and other fes-

The E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching brings together stakeholders in the higher education community across Indiana to examine teaching excellence and innova- tive pedagogies that encourage student learning. Edward C. Moore, for whom this symposium is named, served as the IUPUI dean of the faculties from 1973 until 1982.

The Edward C. Moore Symposium is one of IUPUI’s longest running public events.

The 2022 E.C. Moore Symposium will be held in a virtual format on Friday, March 4, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The symposium is open to all faculty and

instructional staff, regardless of appointment type, institution, or organization. Profession- al staff who provide support for the teaching and learning mission of the campuses (e.g., instructional designers, IT professionals) are also welcome to attend.

This year's Symposium will feature a key- note address delving into the neuroscience of toxic stress and how understanding it can help empower us to both self-regulate and help our students, cope, engage, connect, and learn. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr.

Mays Imad, professor of Genetics, Biotech- nology, and Bioethics at Pima Community

College, as well as the founding coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Center. Her speech will be “Beyond Theory: A practical Approach to Trauma-Informed Teaching and Learning.” Visit https://ecmoore.iupui.edu/

2022 IUSD Research Day

(5)

On January 5, 2022, the global dental community received its final goodnight from one of its luminaries, Dr. George Stookey, who passed away that day at the age of 87. An alumnus of IU (AB, 1957) and IUSD (DDS;

MSD, 1962; PhD, 1971), as recently as 2017, he was still receiving national recognition and awards for his contributions to the profes- sion (ADEA Gies Award for Innovation—

Dental Educator). Dr. Stookey’s administra- tive leadership of the IUSD Oral Health Re- search Institute (OHRI) from 1974 to 1999

propelled OHRI into becoming a globally recognized hub of innovation in research.

IUSD alumnus (DDS, 1949/MSD, 1960), Dr. Charles W. Gish transi- tioned to peaceful rest on January 24, 2022. Heralded by profession- als across various sectors as a man of high integrity, earner of deep respect, unselfish of time and expertise, excellent in rapport with students, a vanguard in dentis- try. he also was a man of the heart. For more than 30 years he served IUSD’s stu- dents, employees, and patients, holding posi- tions from assistant professor to full profes-

sor, co-chairman of the then Department of Community Dentistry, and “Member Com- mittee on Minority Groups in Dental School.” He implemented a program that involved recruiting dentists to treat children of migrant workers, served on an Advisory Committee for Proctor and Gamble’s School Dental Health Education Program, and served on an Advisory Committee that de- veloped protocols and implemented a na- tionwide preventive dentistry project.

For more on the transformative impact Drs. Stookey and Gish had on dentistry, please see the attached announcements.

Dr. Jung Min Hong, previ- ously a visiting assistant research professor with the IU School of Dentistry, is now an assistant re- search scientist for the school in the division of Biomedical Sciences in the department of Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care. Her new appoint- ment began on February 1, 2022. A molecu- lar and cellular biologist, Dr. Hong’s disserta-

tion focused on the genomics of bone diseas- es such as osteoporosis and osteonecrosis.

Since completing her PhD (Physiology and Bone Biology) from the Department of Medi- cine at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea, her accomplishments have included integral contributions to four NIH-NIAMS 1 R01 grants as well as identifi- cation of the function of genes and proteins that induce osteoclast differentiation, cyto- skeletal organization, and osteocytic signal.

Dr. Hong received her MS in Molecular Biol- ogy and BS in Biotechnology from Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, South Korea. In her assistant research scientist position she will be working with Dr. Angela Bruzzaniti (Professor, Biomedical Sciences & Compre- hensive Care), directing research activities as a senior member in Dr. Bruzzaniti’s lab.

Through the lab, Dr. Hong will be conducting independent research and mentoring, train- ing and supervising students/lab members.

Congratulations to Dr.

Chandni Batra, Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor, Periodon- tology, on her acceptance to the CTL's Early Career Teach- ing Academy (ECTA). The academy's sessions will engage Fellows in the collaborative process of developing teaching philosophies and ePortfolios. The teaching philosophy will serve as the keystone for the ePortfolio, framing each Fellow's development and as- sessment of effective teaching and learning

strategies for IUPUI’s diverse student body.

Over the course of the year, each Fellow will identify, develop, and implement a teaching strategy to realize their teaching philosophy, and they will plot the trajectory of their teaching careers by either writing or planning a teaching statement.

Congratulations also go to Dr. Kelton Stewart, Chair, Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics, on his acceptance as a 2022-2023 ADEA Leadership Institute Fellow. The ADEA Leadership Institute is a yearlong pro- gram designed to develop the most promis-

ing individuals at academic dental institu- tions to become future leaders in dental and higher education.

Dr. Stewart has also been selected as the 2022 ADEA/

Colgate-Palmolive Co./

National Dental Association Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford Schol- ar in the ADEA Leadership Institute. As the recipient of

this scholarship, he will receive a $15,000 stipend to be used for tuition and fees for the 2022–23 ADEA Leadership Institute.

Dr. George Stookey, a global legend in the field of preventive dentistry and cariology at IU School of Dentistry (IUSD), died on Jan. 5, 2022. He was 87.

Throughout Dr. Stookey’s distinguished career, his innovation, creativity, scholastic achievements, and mentorship of junior researchers, significantly improved oral health across the globe and enhanced the scholarly mission and reputation of IUSD.

Dr. Stookey was born in Indiana and remained a Hoosier throughout his life.

His early years on a farm prepared him for a disciplined and industrious life.

dentistry ’71) from Indiana University. His career in dental research began at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington in 1957. Freshly graduated from IU’s baccalaureate chemistry program and in search of a summer job, he worked in the lab of Dr. Joseph Muhler, whose research with IU chemistry

professors Drs. Harry Day and William Nebergall was on the cusp of developing the first successful stannous fluoride formula for caries prevention. This formula became the tooth decay preventing agent in Crest® toothpaste. What began as fluoride analysis in Dr. Muhler’s lab for

$1 an hour became a lifelong intellectual curiosity about fluoride and caries diagnostics.

During his academic career at IUSD, Dr. Stookey held 17 IU academic and administrative positions, including as acting dean, executive associate dean, and associate dean of the school’s research mission . In 1981, Dr. Stookey became director of IUSD’s Oral Health Research Institute (OHRI) – IUSD’s research facility created in 1968 with patent royalties from the sale of Crest® toothpaste. Under his leadership, OHRI earned its reputation as a global innovator and leader in preventive dentistry research and oral health care product testing.

Over a six-decade career, Dr. Stookey produced more than 300 publications in professional journals, presented at more than 400 scientific meetings, garnered about $20 million in grants and contracts, and held 20 U.S. and foreign patents, and contributed to numerous textbooks and reference books.

Mentoring, training, and inspiring the careers of many young academic researchers are also among Dr. Stookey’s legacy.

“Dr. Stookey was a giant in the field of cariology,” said Dr. Angeles Martínez Mier, IUSD associate dean of Global Engagement and chair of the

Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry, and Dental Public Health.

“Many of his studies on caries prevention and fluoride metabolism were seminal. The team he led brought distinction to Indiana as one of the cariology powerhouses in the world. Yet, I believe his greatest legacy was the young scientists he mentored; under his leadership, Indiana became a fertile environment for young talent. A quick glance at the leaders and groundbreakers in our field today shows how he identified and nurtured talent in those who trained under him. So many of us would not be where we are today were it not for the support and mentorship of Dr. George Stookey.”

After retiring from the IU faculty in 2001, Dr. Stookey founded his own research company, Therametric Technologies, Inc., which develops new technologies for the early detection of dental decay.

Numerous prestigious national and international organizations recognized Dr. Stookey’s innovations and achievements. In 2017, the American Dental Education Association recognized him with the William J. Gies Award, dentistry’s preeminent recognition, for his innovation in dental education. In 2021, Indiana University bestowed Dr. Stookey with its Bicentennial Medal.

Dr. Stookey’s obituary may be viewed online at Crown Hill Funeral Home

& Cemetery.

by his side on January 24, 2022. He was born June 26, 1923 to the late Floyd and Thelma (Snider) Gish in Carroll County, on the family farm in Camden, Indiana. He graduated from Camden High School in April, 1941. He attended Purdue University and the

University of Notre Dame before receiving his DDS degree with Honors (1949) and a MSD (1960) from Indiana University.

Charles married Treva Metsger, also of Carroll County, on June 23, 1949 in the Chapel of the Wilshire Boulevard Hotel in Los Angeles, California as guests of the "Bride and Groom" radio show.

Charles was drafted into U.S. Navy February 1943 and served 3 years active duty in the Navy during WW II. He also served two years of Active duty with U.S. Armed Forces (Korean War) May 1952 – 1954.

Dr. Gish is a retired dentist from Brookston, Indiana, known for his work in public health practice, academia, and clinical dental research.

He was a Regional Dental Consultant for Region IX of the U.S. Public Health Service from 1952 to 1954. His clinical research brought him much acclaim, due to his participation in the early Crest studies, in which he was

instrumental in the research and development of a preventive prophylaxis paste that was used by dental practitioners for years. Gish and a colleague later developed this product into a self-applied fluoride regimen, generally referred to as "brush ins" in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Starting in 1962, Dr. Gish was the State Dental Director for Indiana for 23 years. He also served on the faculty of Indiana University School of Dentistry for over thirty years, beginning in 1954. He co-chaired the department of community dentistry from 1969 to 1986 and was a full professor from 1977 to 1987. Dr. Gish was a strong advocate to fluoridate community water supplies in Indiana. Under his directions, Indiana became legendary for its robust programs of fluoride and by the mid-1980's fluoridated water was used by 93 percent of all Indiana residents on public water supplies. In addition, for rural communities where community water fluoridation was not possible, he

implemented numerous school-water fluoridation units. At one time, he had more schools that were fluoridated than any other state in the country. He also directed a mobile dental clinic that traveled around the state to provide exams and treatment for school-aged children.

In the dental community, Dr. Gish was widely published in local, state, and

national professional journals.

(10)

He was president of the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors and received its Outstanding Achievement Award. Dr. Gish was also president of the American Association of Public Health Dentists (now the American Association of Public Health Dentistry) and received their Distinguished Service Award. His many awards include The Tony and Mary Hulman Health Award for achievements in preventive medicine given by Indiana Public Health Foundation; Indiana Dental Association Maynard K. Hine Award in recognition of distinguished contributions to the Public and the Dental

Profession thru commitment to excellence in Dental Research in Indiana and Nationally; John W. Knutson Distinguished Service Award in Dental Public Health; and the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Governor Orr of Indiana.

His creativity and ingenuity extended outside of the dental field into his free time and numerous projects on his farm which Awarded him an Outstanding Accomplishment in Resource Conservation Award and Soil and Water

Conservation Award.

Dr. Gish, also an avid collector of Indian artifacts, was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to the advancement of amateur Archaeology from the Indiana Archeological Society and was recently

presented with the Award of Excellence in Camden, Indiana, by the Indiana Archeological Society. He also recently was presented with a 75 year

membership award from the Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge No#211. Charles was also a longtime member of the Brookston American Legion Post No#251. He always enjoyed spending time with his family on their hobby farm where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting.

He is survived by daughters, Tracey Simmerman (Steve) of Battle Ground, and Gail Sembach (Jim) of Indianapolis, also Grandsons Jared Simmerman, and Craig Simmerman (Elissa) of Brookston, and Granddaughter Jessica Siebert (Jeremy) of Fishers, 4 great grandchildren, Jentry and Clay Simmerman, and Janner and Jace Siebert.

He is preceded in death by his wife Treva, a son Bradley Gish, brothers Dr.

Howard M. Gish and Floyd Junior (Jack) Gish and an infant sister Helen

Louise.
