From the Desk of the Interim ADFA

With the CODA Site Visit now in the rearview mir- ror, we can let out a collective sigh of relief. Dean Mur- doch-Kinch, Dr.

Paul Edwards and his team in the Office of Academic Programs did an outstanding job preparing the self-study as well as effectively planning, organizing, and hosting the Site Visitors. The skill and chal- lenging work expended by every IUSD constituency paved the way for success. The Office of Faculty Affairs is indebted to Dr. Edwards for helping our team prepare for the Standard 3 interview. He con- ducted a Mock Interview with the OFA team, taking us through the paces and peppering us with ques- tions we should be prepared to answer. This extra practice paid off and we felt that the Standard 3 interview on September 22nd went quite well. We were delight- ed to learn that one of the strengths identified by the Site Visit Team was the support of faculty development at both the school and institutional levels. This success is the directly attributable to the strength and commitment of the OFA Team: Dr. Richard Gregory, Ms. Shelley Hall, Ms.

Meredith Lecklider, and Mr. Da- mon Spight.

October 1st marked two months

since I rejoined the faculty to serve as the Interim Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. I can assure you that the OFA has been working diligently in focused areas of en- deavor including faculty recruit- ment, promotion and/or tenure activities, and professional devel- opment meetings.

To update you on our progress, the advertisement to recruit candi- dates for the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs has been posted.

We look forward to receiving applica- tions and interview- ing candidates for this position in the near future. In collaboration with Dean Murdoch-Kinch, we continue to refine position descriptions for the Associate Dean for Diversity and Student Affairs and the Associ- ate Dean for Education and Aca- demic Affairs. These key leadership positions are top priority as are recruitment of faculty in depart- ments such as Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentis- try, and Orthodontics. The fall and winter months will be busy with search and screen committee work and top candidate interviews.

The IUSD Promotion and or Tenure Committee ably led by Dr.

Richard Gregory, is in the process of completing the school-level review of our 2021-2022 IUSD candidates: Dr. Wei-Shao Lin, Dr.

Frank Lippert, and Dr. Chandler Walker. Dean Murdoch-Kinch completes the final IUSD level of review before submission of their dossiers to campus at the end of this month. The IUPUI Campus Promotion and Tenure Committee begins its deliberations in January 2022.

Finally, Dr. Richard Gregory and I have been meeting each week with individual faculty who are prepar- ing for promotion and/or tenure in the near-term or who aspire to apply in the future. These meetings are opportunities to discuss pro- gress, strategies, and resources as well as to ask questions and re- ceive guidance and feedback. We are excited to learn about the teaching, research, and service activities faculty members are en- gaged in and what they are doing to contribute to student and school success. If you are interest- ed in arranging such a conversa- tion, please contact Shelley Hall to schedule a meeting. We look for- ward to seeing you.

In the meantime, enjoy the beau- tiful fall weather and colorful leaves, the IUSD Faculty Teaching Conference, October 21st and 22nd at Fort Benjamin Harrison, and those cute little

costumed trick or treaters who will visit on Halloween, Octo- ber 31st.

Congratulations go to all IUSD Re- gatta teams! IUSD made up for lost time during the pandemic by placing

second place finishes, and one third place finish. Well done to everyone involved, and we look forward to

IUSD Regatta Congratulations

MURI facilitates the creation and support of multidisciplinary research teams consisting of undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, senior staff, and faculty. Projects should represent two or more disciplines and should offer undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in a substantive re- search experience focused on a significant research problem.

This is a unique opportunity provided to IUPUI faculty and researchers for mentoring students while conducting pilot projects or testing new techniques and designs. As part of this employment program, students will earn $11 per hour. During the academic year, students work approximately 10 hours

per week; during the summer, students' weekly hours will be determined based on project needs.

The mentors will receive up to $2,000 for research supplies or equipment. MURI is funded through a partnership between the Center for Research and Learning and the School of Engineering and Technology.

Project proposals are submitted by the primary mentor by the posted deadlines.

Please follow the proposal guidelines. If your projects involve human subjects, please know that IRB approval or IRB exempt sta- tus is required prior to the start of the fund- ing cycle. CRL will not fund any project that has not been reviewed by IRB. After peer-

review, a short description of approved MURI projects will be posted on the CRL website. Students interested in participating in a MURI team will apply to the mentors directly by the posted deadlines. Once the mentors have decided on their teams, the student names will be forwarded to CRL, which will then ask the student for additional application information.

Summer applications open November 1, 2021, and close February 1, 2022. For more information and to apply, visit https://

c r l . i u p u i . e d u / f a c u l t y p r o g r a m s / muriprojectawards/index.html. Please con- tact Jerry Daday at [email protected] for more information.

The Graduate Mentoring Center will be offering Faculty and Staff Mentoring Dia- logues through the academic year. Training and discussion modules covered in these dialogues were developed by the National Research Mentoring Network (nrmnet.net) and Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (https://

cimerproject.org). Topics include:

 Maintaining Effective Communication

 Aligning Expectations

 Assessing Understanding

 Addressing Equity and Inclusion

 Fostering Independence

 Promoting Professional Development.

These dialogues are designed to help facul- ty and staff strengthen their mentoring of faculty, staff, and students through discussion and sharing of best practices. To facilitate informative discussion, all faculty and staff with a desire to improve mentoring individu- ally and across campus are encouraged to participate.

Session will be held on the second Tuesday of every month: October 12, November 9, December 14, January 11, February 15,

March 8, and April 12. It will be from 12:00—1:00 pm in UL 1126. Please plan to attend all sessions if you decide to partici- pate. There was a previous session held in September, but an exception will be made for others to join the upcoming sessions without having attended the September ses- sion. Faculty are welcome to join in October if they are committed to attend the rest of the 7 sessions.

Introduction to Grant Proposal Development

Date: Friday, October 8, 2021 Time: 9:30—11:00 am Location: Online—Zoom Register

This information session focuses on basic procedures for developing successful pro- posals to external funding agencies that sup- port the research, teaching, and service missions of the university and campus.

Topics to be discussed include clarifying project objectives (e.g., narrowing the scope of research), matching project objectives to funding agencies (e.g., identifying funding opportunities), becoming familiar with fund- ing agencies (e.g., understanding agency mis- sions, application procedures, and review criteria), basic budget construction (e.g., calculating indirect costs), and communi- cating objectives and methods (e.g., explain- ing complex ideas in a limited space), all with the goal of persuading funding agencies to give you money. Registration closes on Oc- tober 5, 2021 at 11:55pm.

discussion of OVCR support resources avail- able both pre- and post-award.

IUPUI Centers and Institutes Date: Wednesday, October 20, 2021 Time: 1:30—2:30 pm

Location: Online—Zoom Register

This workshop will inform the faculty about IUPUI Centers and Institutes (C&I). Select C&I Directors will present brief descriptions of their respective Center or Institute and then the moderator will help guide discus- sion on questions such as: How can the C&I’s help young faculty build successful research programs? What is the best way for new faculty to become involved in a C&I?

What is/was the rationale for forming your C&I? How has your C&I improved grant funding for your faculty members? What types of research programs have benefited from C&I membership? In other words, what types of grants were only possible because of the value added of a C&I? The goal of this workshop is to explore best practices and campus opportunities for fac- ulty members to engage with Centers and Institutes at IUPUI.

O F F I C E O F F A C U L T Y A F F A I R S The Enhanced Mentoring Program with Opportunities for Ways to Excel in Re- search (EMPOWER) provides support to IUPUI faculty who are historically un- derrepresented and/or excluded popula- tions in their discipline or area of scholar- ship and historically denied admission to higher education or that discipline, 1) to become successful in sponsored research and scholarly activity, and 2) to achieve significant professional growth and advance- ment. The program sustains mentorship opportunities through the EMPOWER Grant Program, supporting achievement of excellence in research and scholarly activity, and optimal attainment of academic career goals and objectives.

In academia, mentoring attends to two dimensions: career and professional devel- opment and social-psychological support.

Mentoring is shown to influence career success, satisfaction, and productivity, thus enhancing the institution’s investment, re- tention rates, and reputation. It could mean the difference between success and failure for early career faculty who are searching for guidance, a sense of belonging, and con-

fidence in their academic journey. This is particularly applicable for faculty pursuing research and creative activity. In addition, research has shown that formal mentoring programs are especially helpful to women and minorities.

There are two categories from which faculty may apply. Category A is intended for assistant professors and untenured as- sociate professors in tenure-track faculty positions. The goal is to assist these faculty members in becoming productive research- ers, and better positioned to successfully get through the tenure and promotion pro- cess. The mentees are assistant professors beginning a research agenda, and developing a plan for sustained external funding. The mentors are associate professors or profes- sors with successful research programs, who are willing to sponsor and support mentees, and assist with developing their research agenda. Category B is intended for associate professors in tenured faculty positions. The goal is to assist these faculty members in achieving a high level of excel- lence in sponsored research and scholarly activity, and better positioned to successful-

ly get promoted to the rank of full profes- sor. The mentees are associate professors with a research program, and developing a plan for growth in external funding. The mentors are professors with successful research programs, who are willing to sponsor and support mentees, and assist with developing their research agenda. In both categories, mentors and mentees can apply separately to the program and get matched by the review committee, or apply together and get evaluated by the review committee.

Up to $10,000 total in support of the mentee’s research and professional devel- opment is available and will be distributed as such: $5,000 for beginning the mentoring program, and $5,000 for successful pro- gress in the program, to be distributed prior to the summer. Funding available to the mentor is $2,000. The mentoring pro- gram will be one calendar year in duration.

EMPOWER Applications Open

The IU School of Dentistry wel- comes Dr. Elizabeth Simpson, who will be joining the Depart- ment of Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care on October 11 as the department’s newest clinical assistant pro- fessor. Dr. Simpson is no stranger to Indi- ana. Prior to completing the General Prac- tice Residency (GPR) certificate program at Meharry Medical College School of Dentis- try (2012, Nashville, TN) and a DMD at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (2010, Boston, MA), Dr. Simpson matricu- lated at the University of Notre Dame, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Professional Studies and minored in Spanish (2003, Notre Dame, IN).

No stranger to IUSD, Dr. Simpson was a

volunteer with the school as a general den- tist for two years at the Jane Pauley Com- munity Health Center Dental Clinic. She brings to her role not only that community health center experience but also several years of private practice experience in com- bination with insights, experience and per- spectives from having served as a general dentist at (Camp) Atterbury Job Corps in Indiana. Of additional significance is the portfolio of knowledge, awareness, and skills she brings to patient care and student teaching as a result of roles she has had such as (1) a Court-Appointed Special Ad- vocate (CASA) for children of mothers undergoing drug rehabilitation, (2) an or- ganizer of Mentors and Mentees (M&M) through the Indiana Association for Institu-

tional Research (INAIR) to pair dental stu- dents serving as mentors with high school students interested in a career in dentistry, and (3) a former member of both the Stu- dent National Dental Association and the Hispanic Dental Association. In many ways, bright smiles are ahead for IUSD, our pa- tients, and our students!

Congratulations to Professor Staci Schory on her transfer from visiting clini- cal assistant professor to clinical assistant professor, effective Oc- tober 1. Professor Schory has been integral to the Dental Assisting pro- gram at Fort Wayne, where she also holds the administrative role of program director of the Certified Dental Assisting Program in the Division of Dental Education.
