From the Desk of the ADFA

March madness represents NCAA basketball, dental education/research meeting season, and the rush for completion of the end of the dental school year with D4 students scur- rying to complete the minimum experiences and successfully com- plete their competency assess- ments. This year has been no differ- ent. While IU and Purdue were not as successful as a Hoosier might have hoped, the faculty at IUSD have been very busy preparing for and attending the ADEA and IADOCR meetings.

We had three of our faculty give presenta- tions at ADEA; Dr.

S y l v i a F r a z i e r - Bowers, Chief Diver- sity Officer, Dr. Ta- wana Ware, volun-

teer clinical assistant professor in Pediatric Dentistry, and Dr.

Stuart Schrader, clini- cal associate profes- sor in Biomedical

Sciences and Comprehensive Care.

To their credit, all three presented on diversity, inclusion, equity, justice or belonging. From un- derstanding the role of the diversity of- ficer within dental schools, to sus- taining and innovating dental path- way programs, to critical thinking, to effective communication within a multicultural work environment, to diversity and social determinants of health, these three faculty members provided valuable information to

dental educators through their knowledge and experiences.

Additionally, five posters were given by IUSD faculty and students, representing the work of 16 indi- viduals. Several more faculty won awards and scholarships. Drs. Pam- ela Linder and Paul Edwards re- ceived ADEA Leadership Institute awards. Dr. Linder’s award was the ADEA Leadership Institute Alumni Association Award to honor Jack Bresch, and Dr. Edwards’ award was an ADEA/American College of Dentists Dr. Jerome Bright Miller Scholars scholarship to attend the ADEA Leadership Institute. Nota- bly, at the Closing House of Dele- gates meeting, Dr. Laura Romito was acknowledged for her years of service on the ADEA Board of Directors as she completed her 3- year term. IUSD was also well rep- resented at the AADOCR meeting.

There were 21 interactive talks given by IUSD faculty and students.

According to Dr. Gabriel Chu, our Associate Dean for Research, this was the highest number of partici- pants ever. It is an attribute to the dedicated scholars and mentors of IUSD. For a complete listing of all ADEA and AADOCR presenta- tions, refer to the provided links.

The IUSD Office of Faculty Affairs in conjunction with the IUSD pro- motion and tenure committee and IUSD Faculty Council Executive Committee has been working to update IUSD’s P&T guidelines to include the new criteria for three types of balanced cases for the tenure track and has been review- ing and revising the non-tenure track document as well. This revi- sion will include clarification of the existing documents to provide both transparency of expectations and

are identified, described, and attain- able. We hope to have all docu- ments completed, reviewed, and approved by the IUSD Faculty Council and approved at the IUPUI campus level by the next promo- tion cycle.

As IUSD Leadership develops the strategic plan for our school, the IUSD Office of Faculty Affairs will be reviewing its own plans as well determining how we may be most effective for our constituents, the faculty and staff of IUSD. We ap- preciate the feedback we are get- ting from our newsletter survey and will be reviewing the infor- mation over the coming months.

This along with other feedback mechanisms will help us determine where best to put our efforts. We are finalizing our plans for the June Faculty Development program, and the August Joint Faculty-Staff Con- vocation. The June program will have presentations as well as breakout sessions. We hope to have something for everyone so topics will include teaching, scholar- ship, mentoring, and support for promotion and tenure. More infor- mation will follow in coming months. The convocation program will be helpful to everyone within the school regardless of your role.

It will include a session on leading from where you are, and the use of TEAMS.

As we head into April and toward the graduation finish line, what is typically the busiest time of the year for faculty, I’d like

to acknowledge the hard work and dedica- tion of all faculty re- gardless of the public

accolades you may have received. It is important to remember all faculty

The ADEA Leadership Institute is a yearlong program designed to develop the most promising individuals at academic dental institutions to become future leaders in dental and higher education. IUSD currently has two of our faculty members attending the Institute this year, and one faculty mem- ber has been a recent graduate. We spoke with all three faculty to hear their thoughts on the Institute, from first impressions to overall thoughts.

Dr. Paul Edwards, Chair of the Oral Pathol- ogy, Medicine and Radiol-

ogy Department, said, “I recently attended the introductory session of the ADEA Leadership Institute, in Portland Ore- gon, and had an oppor-

tunity to attend the presentations outlining the topics covered by last year’s leadership institute cohort. I look forward to participat- ing in the four phases of the program. This is a great opportunity to work with colleagues from different institutions and at different stages of their careers, and to learn more about policy issues affecting academic dentis- try at the local and national level.”

Dr. Wei-Shao Lin, Chair of the Prostho- dontics department, had thoughts to share as well. He said, “Faculty's academic career advancement depends heavily on profession- al development, which cannot be afforded without institutional support. I am grateful for the encouragement and resources pro- vided by Dean Murdoch-Kinch, Dr. Lang, the Office of Faculty Affairs, and the School of Dentistry. In pursuit of professional growth, I started the ADEA Leadership Institute during the 2023 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibi- tion. This yearlong pro- gram is designed to culti- vate leadership skills in individuals at academic dental institutions and higher education. During the orientation session, fellows were divided into peer groups based on their professional and cul- tural backgrounds. Each group was assigned a senior educator to provide feedback on their professional and personal goals. My objectives for the ADEA Leadership Institute are twofold: to enhance my administrative competencies and to establish and strength- en professional relationships within and be-

yond IUSD throughout this program!”

Dr. Kelton Stewart, Chair of the Ortho- dontics and Oral Facial Genetics Depart- ment, was a recent graduate of the class of 2022-23. His thoughts are included below.

“I had the pleasure of participating as a fellow in the ADEA Leadership Institute (LI) Class of 2022-2023. As I

reflect upon my experiences in the ADEA LI program and the professional growth that I attained through the process, several terms come to mind including

guidance, exploration, introspection, instru- mental networking, and professional evolu- tion. For those unfamiliar with the ADEA Leadership Institute, it is a 12-month profes- sional development program facilitated by the American Dental Education Association and the Academy for Advancing Leadership.

The program seeks to ‘develop the most promising individuals at academic dental institutions to become future leaders in dental and higher education.’ The program is currently divided into four phases that focus on the development of specific leadership abilities.

“Phase I seeks to appraise and strengthen personal and interpersonal competencies for leadership. Fellows complete several assess- ments to gain a better understanding of their strengths and areas of improvement as an individual and leader. Phase II is a legislative workshop that focuses on expanding one’s understanding of professional advocacy and the ability to communi- cate with others to achieve a desired out- come, especially with our congressional leaders.

One of the pearls that I vividly recall from one of our Phase II advisors was, ‘If you don’t define the issue or cause some- one else will. And it may be someone with the opposite views or motives as you.’

When possible, we should attain a seat at the table and utilize our voice to promote change, especially within the realm of profes- sional advocacy. Phase III centered on the enhancement of our administrative compe- tencies for leadership. There were excellent sessions on the business side of dental edu- cation, the daily operational activities of high

-level dental administrators, and invaluable content on methods to enhance one’s suc- cess during the interview process (as both an interviewee and interviewer). Phase IV encouraged fellows to integrate the knowledge that was offered throughout the program. We participated in the ADEA Leadership Institute Signature Series and provided presentations about the group work we had conducted over the past year.

The fellows were also highly encouraged to convert their group projects into short man- uscripts that could be submitted for publica- tion within the Journal of Dental Education.

“Overall, I found the ADEA LI program a very rich and rewarding experience. I forged new professional relationships that will help support my continued growth as an emerg- ing leader. I also gained important insights that I believe will change the trajectory and scope of my profes-

sional career. Last- ly, I obtained a better sense of who I am as a lead- er, and more im- portantly, what kind of leader I want to strive to become.

“To my many colleagues reading this news- letter article, I would like to pose a few questions for you to consider. Have you recently engaged in an activity to position yourself to become a better teacher, more prolific researcher, or effective leader?

When was the last time you evaluated your progress along your professional journey?

Are you where you want to be and where the institution/profession needs you to be? If you answered ‘No’

or ‘I don’t know’ to any of these ques- tions, I encourage you to consider applying to a profes- sional development program, like the ADEA Leadership Institute. It might

just be the formative experience you need to take your career to a higher level! If you have any questions about the ADEA Leader- ship Institute program, please feel free to contact me, or the IUSD Affairs, to learn more.”

Faculty, staff, and adminis- trators in higher edu- cation seeking new ways to internationalize your campus, course, and/or curriculum, should consider joining the Center for the Study of Global Change at this year’s Insti- tute for Curriculum and Campus Internaliza- tion (ICCI).

This institute will help you and your institu- tion prepare students, faculty, and staff to be

effective scholars, practitioners, and citizens of the 21st century. ICCI provides the high- est quality learning environment for you to think more deeply and productively about internationalization.

ICCI includes two distinctive tracks with individualized workshops led by experts in international education. The ICCI program mixes dedicated small group workshops, focused on either course or campus interna- tionalization, with large group sessions which encourage perspectives from across any

institution. Some sessions are presentations, while others involve participants in activities.

Different aspects of the ICCI program are meant to model ways to engage audiences in the internationalization process in higher education institutions.

This year’s ICCI will be held May 21—24, 2023. Fees for the Institute are $525, with an additional $125 for the Pre-Institute work- shop if desired. Registration information be found at https://icci.indiana.edu/registration/

O F F I C E O F F A C U L T Y A F F A I R S Dr. Kelton Stewart, depart- ment chair for the depart- ment of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics, has recently been appointed as the Assistant Dean of Facul- ty Development in the IUSD Office of Facul- ty Affairs (OFA), and we extend our congrat- ulations to him for his new role. As the As- sistant Dean of Faculty Development, he will be responsible for several key tasks that will support professional development within the institution. One of his primary responsibili- ties will be to serve on the Faculty Affairs professional development team. In this ca- pacity, he will work in collaboration with members of the OFA team and others throughout the school to support the crea- tion and implementation of professional development initiatives and programming for faculty. One way this will make a difference is that in acknowledging faculty and staff desire to have more professional development initiatives and programming together, OFA’s ability to partner with the IU School of Den- tistry Staff Human Resources team to identi- fy where, when and how such professional development initiatives and programs can occur has been increased.

Also through his new role, Dr. Stewart has responsibility for providing professional de- velopment support through career planning and promotion and tenure consultations. In conjunction with the Associate Dean of Fac- ulty Affairs, he will work with faculty to help them develop their careers and advance in their roles. This will include meeting with faculty candidates to discuss promotion and/

or tenure expectations, school-level and campus-level criteria, and promotion and tenure processes. Moreover, he will work closely with the Office of Faculty Affairs staff and the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs to develop faculty mentoring and coaching pro- grams. He will also help to create the Chairs

Leadership Development Program and other programs for dental school faculty constitu- ents. These programs will provide support and guidance to faculty members at various stages of their careers, helping them to en- hance their teaching, research, and service activities and improve overall performance and job satisfaction. For sure, Dr. Stewart's responsibilities will play a critical role in sup- porting professional development and suc- cess throughout the IU School of Dentistry.

Congratulations to Dr. Juan Sebastian Lara on his new faculty appointment as assistant professor on ten- ure-track in the department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental Public Health. Dr.

Lara joined IUSD in 2019 as a postdoctoral research fellow and then accepted the opportunity to be- come a visiting assistant professor at IUSD in 2021. In this new role as assistant professor, the primary focus of Dr. Lara’s responsibili- ties will include teaching clinical and preclini- cal cariology at the predoctoral and graduate levels. He also will be expected to develop scholarship of teaching and learning in the area. Additional responsibilities will include student mentoring in research. His scholar- ship undertakings may include publishing in peer-reviewed publications, development of new materials and/or technologies, or other forms of academic creative work.

Congratulations to Dr. Grace Gomez Felix Gomez on her new faculty appointment as assistant professor on tenure-track in the division of Dental Informatics in the Department of Dental Pub- lic Health and Informatics. Prior to accepting this position, here at IUSD Dr. Felix Gomez had been a volunteer, staff, a post- doctoral research fellow, and, most recently, visiting faculty. In her new role, Dr. Felix Gomez holds a joint appointment

between the Regenstrief Institute and the division of Dental Informatics. Her division of Dental Informatics responsibilities include developing and maintaining an independent program of research, which includes submis- sion of federal grants as a principal investiga- tor and co-investigator; writing and publishing in peer-reviewed manuscripts; conceptualiz- ing research questions, as well as operational- izing studies, and conducting and analyzing study data.

As a research scientist in the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Regenstrief Insti- tute, Dr. Felix Gomez will be expected to collaborate with Regenstrief investigators and utilize Regenstrief staff to conduct research when possible; teach, develop and direct informatics courses; supervise student re- search and mentor students; develop and manage data management plans; write and publish manuscripts; and participate in grant writing.

Sadly, IUSD’s Dr. Sabrina Sochacki conclud- ed her last day as clinical assistant professor and Dental Biomaterials La- boratory Coordinator in the Division of Dental Biomaterials in the De- partment of Biomedical Sciences and Com- prehensive Care on March 31. For more than six years, Dr. Sochacki’s expertise as an academic and researcher, her enthusiasm as a colleague, and her engagement as one com- mitted to institutional and organizational service has helped to elevate the success of our students. Her teaching responsibilities included didactic teaching within the Dental Materials courses; coordination of the Dental Biomaterials Laboratory and supervision of student researchers. Dr. Sochacki’s commit- ment to service within IUSD included being a member of the Faculty Awards Committee and the IUSD Research Committee. We extend best and warm wishes to her.

O F F I C E O F F A C U L T Y A F F A I R S The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers over 400 awards in more than 130 coun- tries for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and carry out professional pro- jects around the world. College and univer- sity faculty, as well as artists and profession- als from a wide range of fields can join over 400,000 Fulbrighters who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections and greater mutual understanding. The Fulbright Scholar Program is designed to expand and strengthen the relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of the rest of the world. To support this mis- sion, grantees will be asked to give public talks, mentor students and otherwise en- gage with the host country community, in addition to their primary research or teach- ing/research activity.

Applications are now being accepted for 2024-2025. Find out how to submit a com- petitive application by joining one of the upcoming webinars or virtual advising sessions listed at https://apply.iie.org/portal/

scholar_webinars. Fulbright opportunities range from a few months to a full year and many of the awards offer flexible durations.

Each award outlines the duration and po- tential start dates. Many awards offer a Flex option which is designed for Scholars who require multiple visits to the host country.

This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the

fall and/or spring semesters. Applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement and include a project timeline.

The Fulbright Global Scholar Award allows U.S. academics and professionals to engage in multi-country, trans-regional pro- jects. As a truly worldwide award, U.S.

scholars will be able to propose research or combined teaching/research activity in two to three countries with flexible schedule options; trips can be conducted within one academic year or spread over two consecu- tive years. Applications are welcome from a wide range of scholars - early career, pro- fessor emeriti, independent scholars - and from all disciplines, including those with an interdisciplinary focus.

For the Global Scholar Award, candidates must propose project activities that will take place in two to three countries in at least two different world regions. World regions are defined as Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe-Eurasia, Middle East and North Africa, South and Central Asia, and Western Hemisphere.

Global Scholar Award projects which in- clude countries from only one world region will not be accepted. All Global Scholars will receive a minimum total monthly sti- pend of $3,500. The application deadline is September 15, 2023.

Fulbright Postdoctoral Awards pro- vide recently graduated scholars an oppor- tunity to conduct research and receive professional training abroad. Awards may involve limited teaching. Postdoctoral Awards are open to scholars who will have

received a doctoral degree (Ph.D., J.D., M.D., Ed.D., etc.) within five to seven years of the fellowship start date, as noted in the award description. Degree conferment before the start of the award is mandatory.

Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Awards are viewed as the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Pro- gram. Awards are open to scholars who have more than seven years of experience in their discipline or area of expertise. Dis- tinguished Scholars are expected to actively engage host institutions in a spirit of pro- moting mutual understanding and sharing knowledge.
