uniformity on a number of aca- demic issues. In response, the program proposal is designed to address the major themes and provide programming that is con- tinuous, purposeful, and supports the needs and professional career growth of the faculty. We will continue to examine the details of the faculty development report and proposal, consider next steps and inform the faculty as deci- sions are made going forward.

The AAL (Aspire, Achieve, Lead) team led by Dr. Tobias Rodri-

guez, has completed the IUSD Faculty Development Assess- ment. The report, based on the IUSD Faculty Survey out- comes and Focus Group feed- back, was very recently provided to Dean Williams and the Office of Faculty Affairs. The report, 82 pages in length, is currently un-

der review. The broad themes of the recommendations for a pos- sible future comprehensive facul- ty development program likely will come as no surprise to you.

The overarching themes identi- fied through the assessment included: 1) development of a culture of inquiry at IUSD, 2) academic career development and 3) mentorship. Another major point identified was the need for faculty calibration and

Indiana University’s Mack Center for Inquiry on Teaching and Learning enhances teaching and learning by advancing the schol- arship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Each year a group of fellows is selected from the full- time faculty (tenured, holding tenurable appointments) of IU campuses to conduct research on SoTL. Each applicant must propose an ambitious yet attaina- ble SoTL research project. Pro- jects should be innovative, well grounded in the emerging body of knowledge about SoTL, and have a projected important effect on the home campus, IU, SoTL

and/or on scholarly teaching across the academy. Dissemina- tion through poster sessions and journal submission in an appro- priate scholarly peer-reviewed journal are expectations of the fellowship. Further dissemination through other publications and through the successful imple- mentation of new programs is encouraged. Mack Fellows re- ceive $1,000 in initial research funds and $1,000 after they have completed their project and submit a paper to a scholarly journal. The Mack Fellowships for this cycle will begin in March of 2015 and end in May of 2016.

Canvas is IU’s new learning man- agement system that will eventually replace Oncourse. Oncourse will continue to be available through the summer of 2016. However, faculty can begin their migration to Canvas now. If you later change your mind and want to return to Oncourse, you can do so. Courses are available for the faculty instruc- tor of record to access in both Canvas and Oncourse to work on their site. Students will have access to fall course sites in Oncourse beginning Thursday, July 24th. For courses being taught in Canvas, students will have access as soon as the instructor publishes the course. To help you prepare for the transition, the CTL is providing

Canvas Workshops to help you get started and learn more about the available tools and the capabilities of this new management system.

To learn more about Canvas at IU, you can visit Next.IU.edu. You can access Canvas via this link http://

canvas.iu.edu just as you currently do with Oncourse, the login pro- cess is the same. The CTL has a number of online training re- sources that you can access includ- ing:

 Teacher Orientation 101 - Offers an in-depth look at many of Canvas’ features; join the course to access activities and quizzes

 Canvas Instructor Guide

 Up and Running with Canvas – Lynda.com tutorial

 Canvas Instructor Quickstart Guide - PDF download

 Canvas Video Guide - a collec- tion of video feature demos

 Register to Watch a Recorded Overview of Canvas by IT Training (from June 2014) In addition, Canvas hands-on work- shops will be provided to allow instructors to explore the system first-hand and try out the various features of the system; navigation, settings, conversations, files, sylla- bus, announcements and calendar.

The seating for these training ses- sions is limited so register early.
