From the Desk of the EAD/ADFA
Well, at the end of last month's letter, I clearly spoke too soon! On Friday, September 2nd, we came in early to a precise replay of the previous burst pipe issue. The same part of the pipe and the same track- ing route of the water, assisted by gravity. Dean Williams, Dr. Chris Guba, Adam Smith and I met in my office (the Dean's
still drying out), to discuss strategy.
Much kudos to Adam and his
team, Dr. Guba for managing the clinic facilities, and Leah Colbert for so skillfully and quickly reassigning patient appointments. Frustrating challenges, but always addressed.
Meanwhile, work outside, prepar- ing the ground for the new building facility, proceeds steadily. Lots of drilling, excavating, creating a gaping cavity—sounds familiar? And of course, what a memorable day for us all, on September 23rd, with the official Ground Breaking ceremony, led by President McRobbie. Such an experience unique for most of us, within a professional lifetime.
Our office continues to be busy with departments, chairs, and the campus, in the various stages of bringing new faculty onboard. While much effort goes into the hiring of full time faculty, it's easy to overlook the importance of our adjuncts, our part-time colleagues, who provide so much vital input, especially to our clinical programs. Recognizing this, we will be hosting a workshop for our adjunct colleagues, led by the Office of Academic and Clinical
Affairs, in essence a calibration ses- sion, on Saturday, November 5th.
All faculty will be welcome, but we hope to encourage as many of our adjunct clinical colleagues as possi- ble, and CE credits will be given for attendance.
From time to time I mention our Mentoring Academy Program, a Chair-focused project to benefit all faculty and thus the mission of the school. While progress has been slower than we might have wished for, and through no fault of anyone, we were pleased to participate in a campus event early in September.
Dr. Mindi Thompson of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity provided some valuable overviews of mentoring strategy followed in the afternoon, by poster presentations from the 12 campus schools that have received funding and support for their programs. Dr.
Paul Edwards, who has so ably driv- en our own work, crafted a fine summary of our progress to date, and our poster received considera- ble interest and requests to follow up. As a reminder, we are the only school that has chosen to focus primarily on the chairs. More to follow...
During the week of the Labor Day holiday, we hosted a small group of 4 Brazilian dental students from the dental school of FAESA, in Brazil (Faculdades Integradas Espirito San- tenses). Dr. Oriana Capin put great effort into organizing a useful and rewarding program for the students, and enlisted the help and support of other faculty and our own students.
The visit culminated in a most enjoy- able and fun dinner, downtown,
together with the group visiting the McKinney School, who are now in their eighth year of this partnership.
When I asked the 4 FAESA students for one memorable impression of the visit, one positive, one negative, the former
was the re- spectful and collegial rela- tionship they
observed between faculty and stu- dents in the clinic. On the other side, they were politely critical of what they perceived to be rather slack discipline with respect to infec- tion control in the clinics. Interest- ing!
I will close on the main event, again. Following the excitement of the Ground Breaking party on 23rd, the evening saw a record turnout for the annual Dean's Society Din- ner. Dean Williams and John Hoff- man acknowledged the enormous support from alumni and other friends of IUSD. In addition, Dr.
Lloyd Hagedorn was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award for all the incredible work he has done to further the cause of IUSD and in spearheading the fundraising cam- paign for the new facility. I was deeply moved and honored to be elected an "Honorary Alumnus" of the school. In my comments, with the room full of alumni and their guests, I referred to the almost 700 international alumni, from 64 coun- tries, that our graduate programs have produced over 6 decades. As President McRobbie observed earli- er, Indiana University is one of the premier global universities in the country. We are all playing our part.

With deep pride and honor, on Friday, Sep- tember 23rd, the IU School of Dentistry held a momentous groundbreaking ceremo- ny that celebrated the school’s historical contributions to the state and to the world in teaching research, and service; contribu- tions rooted in and furthered by an undi- minished commitment to excellence.
That commitment to excellence has been a contributor to the high volume of student applications IUSD receives, said Indiana University President Michael McRobbie, presider of the ceremony. He also re-
marked on how the School of Dentistry is among the “major” contributors to Indiana University’s social and economic impact on the state of Indiana, noting IUSD has main- tained that influence despite an aging infra- structure that somehow has managed to serve more than 30,000 patients per year.
President McRobbie’s comments then shifted toward officially ushering in a new era for the IU School of Dentistry, an era embarked upon with new state of the art clinics that will make IUSD “one of the most technologically current dental schools in the country.” With a signature unveiling of the name of facility, the “James J. Fritts, DDS Clinical Care Center,” the groundbreaking was proudly proclaimed and applause erupt- ed throughout the audiences.
Other speakers during the event included
Dean John Williams, Associate Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs Dr. Chris Guba, and D2
Class President, Josiah Smith.
As President McRobbie stated in his closing re-
marks, “We can be ever more confident that the future holds great promise for the [IUSD] and the services it will provide to [all humanity.]”
Special thanks to all contributors to the planning and implementation of this grand groundbreaking event. And, a special thank you to IUSD alumnus, Dr. James Fritts, who made a significant financial contribution toward the new building addition, hence the naming of that addition in his honor.

IUSD Sweeps UW Awards
The IUPUI Annual United Way Kick-off luncheon served by celebrity servers from campus offices and schools vied to raise tips and battled to win the best costume and best table decoration competitions to raise money for United Way of Central Indiana.
Featured guests included Rafael Sanchez of WRTV, left, and Rafael Sanchez, the presi- dent of IPL, right
with Chancellor, Nasser Paydar in the middle. The two Sanchezes are Unit- ed Way of Central Indiana's community engagement co- chairs and put on
quite a humorous presentation, which in- cluded light-up gold shoes on the reporter.
The 2016 Celebrity Server with the most tips was our own Dean Williams, IU School of Dentistry, with total of $1619 in tips! The gold trophy remains in the hands of Dean Williams and the School of Dentis- try. In the Runner-Up category was the Interim Vice Chancellor, Tralicia Lewis, and Jason Spratt, Division of Student Affairs, with total tips of $598. Two other servers came in a close 3rd and 4th place, Margie Ferguson (Academic Affairs) and Stephen Hundley (Planning and Institutional Improve- ment). The total of all the tips was
$3,783.90 with donations totaling $580 for the auctioned items (hotel package with
Colts tickets). The total raised for United Way of Central Indiana was $4,363.90 which exceeds last year’s luncheon fundrais- ing by $1,258.59! What a great way to kick- off the IUPUI
campaign.
The best costume was awarded to Student Af- fairs, Tralicia (as Hilary Clinton) and
Jason (Donald Trump). The best decorated table was awarded to the School of Dentis- try and Dean Williams’ construction zone motif (or a crime scene investigation?!) Dr. Jeffrey Platt was selected last month to serve as Convener of ISO/TC106 Subcommittee 2 Workgroup 7
which is responsible for all international standards for impression materials. The International Organization for Standardization develops and publishes international standards including the performance, safety and specification requirements of dental products used in oral health care. Congratulations on your ISO committee appointment.

Three faculty, including Dr. Pam Shaw, credit- ed for exceptional support for students with disabilities were honored by Chancel- lor Nasser Paydar and Karen Dace, the vice chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, with the first Advocate for Equity in Accessi- bility Awards during IUPUI's annual Diversity Soiree last month in ceremonies at the One America building in downtown Indianapolis.
The awards were given for "going above and beyond every expectation in the sup- port of students with disabilities at IUPUI,"
said Dace. The honorees included Sheryl Allen, former dean of students for the School of Medicine, Pamella Shaw, associate
dean of diversi- ty, equity and inclusion in the School of Den- tistry and Rob- ert Yost, profes- sor in the School of Science.
In addition to receiving plaques during the reception, a larger plaque celebrating the award will be mounted in a hallway in Jo- seph T. Taylor Hall. "The placement of the plaque is significant because it is the location of multiple diversity-related student services offices," Dace said. Taylor Hall is appropri-
ate for another reason, too. Dace added that the man for whom the building is named was a staunch advocate of such services and the father of a daughter with special needs.
The award will play an important role in campus efforts to be inclusive. "We want to ensure that our students with disabilities enjoy all of the benefits of campus life possi- ble," she said, noting that everyone on cam- pus can play a part. "Working closely with the professionals in Adaptive Educational Services, these advocates work behind the scenes to remove obstacles so that students with disabilities receive the appropriate accommodations in order to succeed,"
IUSD Building Progress
As the month of September came to a close, con- tractors were completing the excavation of the crawl space for the new clinical building, fine- tuning and leveling the depth of the soil. To our disappointment, no interesting archeo- logical artifacts like dinosaur bones were discovered in the excavation site!
As of September 30th, steel support piers will begin to be installed for the foundation of the new facility. Unfortunately, this work
will be very noisy, and will likely cause vi- bration throughout the existing facility. You will also hear the alarm sounds from the construction vehicles as they are backing up as they complete this activity. According to Adam Smith, Director of Facility and Auxil- iary Operations, this is pretty much stand- ard fare for this type of construction, and will occur with
some frequen- cy as we move further into the c on st ruc t ion phase of the building. Look for concrete to
arrive as early as the first week of October and steel in early December.
In January, Ver- mont Street will be closed for two weeks for utility
work and tie-ins for the new building. Multi- ple campus service providers will work together to redirect traffic.
No updates were provided this month on the Michigan Street widening or Phase II of the current facility redesign, but stay tuned for lots more news as the clinical building and other construction projects progress.
The Oral Health Research Institute recently acquired new state of the art equipment. One new acquisition is a digital transversal microradiography unit (TMRD). It utilizes a tungsten micro-focus x-ray source and is based on real-time imaging using a high-resolution photodetector and analysis with dedicated software. TMRD eliminates the use of glass plates or film, allowing for higher reproducibility and lower variability. It is currently being used as primary analytical tool in several industry- sponsored in situ and in vitro caries research studies. The other acquisition is a portable optical coherence tomography (OCT) system (IVS-300-XP OCT, Santec, Japan). It consists of a swept source, balanced detector, special digitizer board and computer all in one box with a separate small probe head. The software incorporates many user-friendly functions, including real time enface extraction for target identification and surface profiling with polygon data conversion, thickness measurement with submicron precision. This OCT system will support in vitro and clinical studies on dental erosion and caries.

Faculty Recruitment Update
Cloudy skies gave way to bright sun as the Eighth Annual IUPUI Regatta unfolded Satur-
day, Sep- t e m b e r 24th on the Indiana C e n t r a l Canal at 10th and 11th Streets.
This year’s Regatta provided the oppor- tunity to reclaim the Regatta gold after a
stunning defeat last year by campus compet- itors. Ah, the sweet, wet, feeling of con- quering on the water! IUSD you did it again, responding in a big way to the challenge to oar and cheer our men
and women teams to the victory platform.
Congratulations to champion Women’s T e a m , “ M i n t y Fresh” (Allison Wil- liams, Audrey Welklin,
Hailey Wilson, Becca Baer, Hunter Allen, Bridget Swope) and champion Men’s Team
“Teeth” (John Seely, Jake Balkos, Sean Kelly, Kendall Frazier, Brian Naylor)!
Making it to the victory platform in third place was IUSD’s women’s team “Golden
Crowns” (Logan Wheeler, Jillian Albee, E m m a M e y e r , E r i n S e e l y Katelyn Brauer) and IUSD’s men’s team
“Fearless Festooners” (Jeff Valliere Patrick Mangan, Uzi Kamal, Alan Prouty). Congratu- lations to these outstanding rowers as well!
They are crews that know how to cruise.
Overall, the IU School of Dentistry had a tremendous, enthusiastic showing: 15 teams of rowers for over 120 participants and volunteers and an
u n n u m b e r e d amount of family members and fans. Relive IUPUI Regatta 2016 by checking out this

To adjust for inflation, effective August 1, 2016, the maximum fines for OSHA https://www.osha.gov/ violations increased 78.2 percent for certain categories of violation. Examples include the following:
The maximum fine for serious and other-than-serious violations rose from $7,000 to $12,741.
The maximum fine for willful and repeat violations increased from $70,000 to $124,709.
The maximum fine for failure to abate was $7,000 and is now $12,741.
Going forward there will be annual or periodic increases depending upon inflation rates. States are required to adjust their own fines within six months if they do not follow federal OSHA guidelines. New fines by states have to be at least as effective as the ones the federal regulators have put into place. Let’s stay safe!
OSHA UPDATE
Assistant Deans Appointed
Last month, Dr. Christianne Guba, Associate Dean for Aca- demic and Clinical Affairs, an- nounced the appointment of Prof. Melinda Meadows as As- sistant Dean for Academic Affairs, and Dr. David Brown as Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs, after an internal search for these new positions. These ad- ministrative positions were created as part of a restructuring plan for the office.
Since 1999, Melinda Meadows, Associate Clinical Professor, Department
of Pediatric Dentistry, has served as both a clinical faculty member and more recently as the Director of Program and Institutional Assessment in the
Office of Academic Affairs. She has exten- sive experience and expertise in curriculum matters, assessment and operations. She holds an AS in Dental Hygiene; a BA in
Health Sciences Education, and a MS in Health Sciences Education, all from Indiana University. In addition, she has received numerous Teaching, Research and Service Awards during her tenure at IUSD.
David Brown, Professor and Chair of the Department of Comprehensive
Care and General Dentistry, has been an IUSD faculty mem- ber since 1986. Dr. Brown earned his BA and DDS degrees from The Ohio State University
and his MS in Prosthodontics from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Brown also served as the Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry for 11 years. He has extensive experience and expertise in clinical operations management. A Board Certified Prosthodontist, Dr. Brown cur- rently serves as a NERB examiner and Con- sultant to the Commission on Dental Com- petency Assessments.
Dr. Guba in her new Associate Dean posi- tion will focus on strategic matters such as the evolution of the educational and clinical missions within the new clinical building, enhancement of screening and patient as- signment, new sources of patient availability, and the IDP program, as well as assuring that policies and procedures are in place and functioning as required for IUSD’s next CODA accreditation site visit in the fall of 2020.
The parallel positions of the assistant deans for academic and clinical affairs will focus on the operations of academic and clinical af- fairs, for more of the day-to-day functions and responsibilities.
Congratulations to both Assistant Dean Meadows and Assistant Dean Brown on their new appointments in the Office of Academic and Clinical Affairs. We wish them success as they embark on this new journey.
The 2016 IUSD Teaching Conference is just around the corner on October 6th and 7th in the Brown County State Park in Nash- ville, IN. Registration was completed last month to allow for final planning and prepa- ration for the conference and associated activities.
The main focus of this year’s conference will be communi- ty-based education. This topic, selected by the faculty, is particularly relevant as we move toward the implemen- tation of a Community Based
Education rotation in the D4 students’ aca- demic year. The speaker will be Dr. William Piskorowski, Assistant Dean for Community -Based Education, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
We will also have presentations from two of our faculty colleagues, Dr. Gabriel Chu and Dr. Vanchit John. Dr. Chu, Associate Dean for Research, will present his vision on the future direction of research at IUSD. Dr. Vanchit John, Chair of the De- partment of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs, will deliver a presentation enti- tled, “Transition Planning. A Critical Mo-
ment in IUSD’s Future.”
This is a landmark year as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the IUSD Teaching Con- ference. For the last fifty years, the IUSD Teaching Conference has been a forum for IUSD faculty members to meet and discuss teaching/learning issues, learn new technolo- gies, improve colleague relationships, and receive updates on future plans.
The Teaching Conference af- fords us a great opportunity to enjoy the fall weather and take in the great fall scenery at Brown County State Park..
