From the Desk of the EAD/ADFA

The month of Septem- ber has undoubtedly been dominated by matters of international and global importance for the school. Howev- er, before launching into discussing those activities, I must mention the passing of two colleagues, both of whom played an important role in the life of IUSD. Vince Sheehan worked closely with the administra- tion of IUSD over the past few years, in his role as Chief Infor- mation Officer and Associate Vice President for Information Technolo- gy. Vince had planned to retire from IU next June but, sadly, passed away in his sleep, earlier this month. He spearheaded many aspects of our IT evolution, including the commission- ing of the Fritts Clinical Care Cen- ter. Dr. Chuck Palenik retired from IUSD several years ago, and had worked for many years in the field of infection control, most notably with Dr. Chris Miller with whom he published papers and texts that are still widely read. Those who knew or worked with Chuck were always guaranteed some personal insight on the state of the school, the universi- ty and indeed, the world. We offer sincere condolences to both their families, friends and colleagues.

Also on the home front, I am de- lighted to report that the search process for our dean to succeed Dean Williams is now well under way. Some additions were made to the composition of the University Search and Screen Committee, and during the recent meeting of the group with the Professional Search Company, it is clear that several potential candidates have already been identified. However, I cannot stress enough that personal nomina- tions and recommendations carry considerable weight, so please do submit those directly to Stephen Hundley in the Chancellor’s Office

([email protected]) or to Parker and Associates, whose information is within the message all were sent a few weeks ago.

Returning to the international theme, we welcomed two students and their faculty mentor from FAE- SA, a universi-

ty in Brazil from which we have had visitors previ-

ously. Dr. Oriana Capin took several IUSD students to FAESA in May, and this was the return visit. We now have two approved Study Abroad Programs, the other being with Newcastle University in England. I am enthusiastic to establish more, as all the evidence indicates that there are both short and long-term bene- fits for students who engage in these programs.

Technological developments and advances are generally perceived as advantageous, although infamous examples can sometimes indicate otherwise. The internet has trans- formed all our lives, mostly, we believe, for the better. Those of us who started our careers before the mid-1980’s can attest to the

‘different world’ in which we now operate. Many of us our essentially

‘prisoners’ of our e-mail accounts and one famous commentator re- cently referred to this not as the world of connection, but rather distraction. Food for thought. But one useful and recently adopted tool has been ‘Zoom®’. Dr. Richard Gregory, who organizes and coordinates our c o l l a b o r a t i o n with King Saud University in Riyadh, set up a video conference for us recently, in order to engage Dr. Nawaf Labban in con- versation to enhance our interactive program. Such facilities will be, I am sure, used increasingly for such pur-

poses, as well as providing scope for on-line educational projects.

In March, 2019, President McRobbie will officiate at the open- ing of the next IU Gateway, The ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) office, in Bangkok.

IUSD is proud to have over 50 alumni from our graduate programs in Thailand, and so Dr. Gabe Chu and I spent several days in discus- sions by way of preparing for a den- tal event to accompany other meet- ings and receptions to be held dur- ing that time. We met with the den- tal deans of

Chulalongkorn, Mahidol and Walailak Uni- versities, as

well as twice with Peter Boonjarern, the hard working president of the Thailand Alumni Chapter, who was extremely helpful in guiding us t h r o u g h planning, and also with several of our graduate alumni. There is great enthusiasm for a dental social and educational event to be held around that time, and we will be working on developing a program. Dean Suchit Poolthong of Chulalongkorn (whom we have known for some time) has generously offered to make facilities available in the school, and we reviewed these with him. Peter has also kindly offered to help with logistics. Dr. Thanpuying Petchara Techakampuch is the most distinguished living alumna of our school. She is Dean Emerita of the dental school at Chulalongkorn Uni- versity and was dentist to the late King Rama IV and his family for many years. The King bestowed upon her the high honor of

“Thanpuying”.

IU School of Dentistry’s Department of Periodon- tics & Allied Dental Pro- grams will be represented at the International Osteol- ogy Symposium Barcelona

2019 by clinical assistant professor Dr.

Yusuke Hamada.

In the summer of 2017 Dr. Hamada and Periodontics resident Dr. Jennifer Chang received notification from the Osteology

Foundation that their grant proposal

“Comparison of the released amounts of growth factors from platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in healthy individuals and chronic peri- odontitis patients” was selected for funding.

Dr. Hamada served as the principal investi- gator. Now he will be in Barcelona April 25—27, 2019 to present on their work. Part of his time there will consist of a poster presentation session in the morning and potentially a subsequent oral presentation

session. Only approximately ten percent of all Osteology Foundation Young Researcher Grant applicants receive funding. It was a

“distinguishing honor” to receive the grant and no less so to be selected for this sympo- sium. The International Osteology Symposi- um will highlight the next generation of re- generative therapies, i.e. the latest develop- ments of techniques and technologies as well as the next generation of dentists – experts in the field of oral tissue regeneration.

Dr. Hamada Invitation

Congratulations to Drs. Kath- erine Kula and Ahmed Ghoneima as co-editors of the textbook Cephalometry in Orthodontics: 2D and 3D, pub- lished by Quintessence Pub- lishing Company and available as of September 2018. Dr. Katherine Kula (MS, DMD, MS) is professor emeritus of the IU School of Dentistry’s (IUSD) Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics,.

Dr. Ghoneima (BDS, PhD, MS) is chair and

associate professor of Ortho- dontics at Hamdan Bin Mo- hammed College of Dental Medicine. He is also an ad- junct associate faculty member in the IUSD Department of Orthodontics & Oral Facial

Genetics. The purpose of this new textbook is to provide an updated text on clinical cephalometrics, relating these measures to the anatomical parts of the craniofacial com- plex rather than specific philosophies. Clini-

cal orthodontics is transitioning from two- dimensions (2D) world to three-dimensions (3D), improving diagnosis and the outcome of growth and treatment. However, clini- cians need to understand 2D cephalometry to be able to apply it to 3D cephalometry.

Other textbook contributors from IUSD include Drs. Ted Parks, Achint Utreja, Paul Edwards, and Eman Allam. Experts from other schools include Juan Martin Palomo, Manuel LaGravere, and many other young orthodontic investigators.

Cephalometry in Orthodontics

As competition for external funding becomes more challenging, getting one's scholarly work successfully published is more im- portant than ever. This year, Dr. George Gopen will present this workshop, and an advanced workshop of the same topic. Dr.

Gopen's approach is based on a single idea: learning to write for the reader allows the writer to control what readers learn.

Two workshops will be presented: “Scientific Writing From the Reader’s Perspective,” and “Advanced Scientific Writing from the Reader’s Perspective.” If you are planning to attend the advanced workshop you must attend the first workshop or have attended one in the years prior.

As in past years, Dr. Gopen will also conduct hour-long, individu- alized consultations. Only faculty members who participate in the day-long event will have access to the individual consultation reg- istration. Instructions will be sent to participants after their regis- tration for the workshop is complete.

The workshops will be at the following times:

TEACH! Interprofessional Learning Anchor 1, Introducing Interprofessional Collabora- tion, took place on September 11, 2018 at the IUPUI Campus Center and Hine Hall.

The TEACH! Learning Anchors are required components of selected courses in the DDS curriculum. Anchor 1 is a component of Dr.

Stuart Schrader’s and Dr. Odette Aguirre’s D503 course for first year dental students.

Four separate sessions of Introducing In- terprofessional Collaboration, each 150 minutes in length, were held throughout the day and evening. The class of first year den- tal students participated in the morning session with students from the IU Schools of Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nursing, and Purdue Pharma- cy. Learners were grouped into interprofes- sional teams who then learned about, from,

and with each other over the course of the event by engaging in activities that enabled them to explore their respective profession- al roles and responsibilities. They worked together as a team to prioritize health- related concerns in the case of an individual with complex healthcare needs. In the first session 308 learners and 17 facilitators par- ticipated. IUSD faculty facilitators for this session included Drs. Odette Aguirre, Su- zanne Benedict, Rick Jackson, Liz Ramos, Priya Thomas, and Tawana Ware.

Through the Fundamentals of Dental Hy- giene (DHYG-H218) course, the first year class of dental hygiene students participated in the third session of the day with students from the IU Schools of Nursing, Occupa- tional Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Public Health. In all, ninety learners and six facilita-

tors were involved in this session. IUSD faculty facilitators included Professors Lisa Maxwell and Pamela Rettig. Professor Max- well was pleased to find that in some of the teams her students were leading the discus- sion, despite being only four weeks into their program.

The TEACH! curriculum was adopted by participating Schools and its implementation across the IU system is organized by the IU Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. IUSD faculty are encouraged to become involved in the TEACH! program and lend their expertise in dentistry and dental hygiene to development and imple- mentation of instruction. For more infor- mation on interprofessional practice and education or the TEACH! curriculum, please visit https://ipe.iu.edu.

TEACH! Learning Anchor 1

This year’s IU Online Conference will be held on November 9 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis (One South Capi- tal Ave.).

Presented by the Office of Online Educa- tion (OOE), in conjunction with the Office of Collaborative Academic Programs (OCAP) and eLearning Design and Services (eDS), the conference is your opportunity to learn, share experiences, and network with others who are making online educa- tion outstanding at Indiana University.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr.

Alec Couros, an international leader and pioneer in open education. Professor of educational technology and media in the Faculty of Education, University of Regina, Canada, Couros also works with school districts, universities, and government agen- cies to develop policies and guidelines for digital citizenship, social media presence, and technology integration. Couros will speak on how to leverage technology for the most effective online learning experience.

The IU Online Conference is a no-cost event open to IU staff, faculty, or others

interested in our mission of delivering en- gaging, high-quality online courses. This year’s conference will showcase the innova- tors and collaborators of online education with a fantastic lineup of speakers. A conti- nental breakfast and all-inclusive lunch will also be provided.

Visit here for more detailed information on conference topics and for a detailed itiner- ary.

The deadline to register for the conference is October 5, 2018 at 5pm. Visit here to register and for more information.

2018 IU Online Conference

We hope that she will be invited officially to the central event and be recognized by Pres- ident McRobbie/Dean Williams in some way, understanding that there will be strict pro- tocol in the presence of HRH Princess Sirindorn.

Our colleagues in the specialty of prostho- dontics are already planning a meeting of the

“Future Leaders in Prosthodontics (FLIP)”, an international group being organized by

Dr. Kamolphob Phasuk. We hope to enlist the participation of some of their renowned speakers for our general IUSD session. We already have serious expressions of interest from alumni in other countries of the region who may join our educational and social activities that will occur around March 4-6.

Once finalized, we will publish the program.

This week we will come together as a fac- ulty for our annual Teaching Conference, to

be held at McCormick’s Creek State Park.

An opportunity to learn, contribute, and most importantly, communicate with one another. The IUSD Staff will hold their own annual conference here in town, at the Indi- anapolis Zoo.

Hopefully we will all return from our re- spective meetings enlightened, informed, and enthusiastic as we continue to roll through the year.
