Department of Ophthalmology Summer-Fall 2014 Researchers get RPB grant to advance discoveries at Glick Eye Institute
The Department of Ophthalmology at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute has received a five-year unrestricted grant from Research to Prevent Blindness, providing flexibility in developing and expanding the department’s research programs.
RPB’s annual $115,000 grant, awarded to academic ophthalmology departments at medical institutions provides opportunity for creative planning beyond the scope of typical research projects, explained Michael Boulton, Ph.D., director of basic science and translational research and Merrill Grayson Professor of Ophthalmology.
“This award is in recognition of our rapidly expanding research program which over the last 12 months has realized awards in excess of $15 million,” said Dr. Boulton. Much of this recent funding is to support Dr.
Boulton and Maria Grant, M.D., the Marilyn K. Glick Professor of Ophthalmology. The researchers and their teams joined the Glick Eye Institute and the IU School of Medicine faculty last year.
Dr. Boulton said the unrestricted grant gives the department the potential to provide “development” awards to junior and mid-level faculty to facilitate new projects, to enhance the

bioimaging core and to attract new faculty. This award opens the door for the faculty in the department to apply for other RPB grants which were previously unavailable.
“This is an important step forward in achieving our strategic plan for vision research and will facilitate our long term goal to develop new treatments for diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration,” said Louis B. Cantor, M.D., chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Jay C. and Lucile L. Kahn Professor of Glaucoma Research.

From the Chairman
Fifty years ago, most ophthalmology programs were housed as sections within departments of surgery, had limited funding, little research activity, minimal autonomy, and trained clinicians almost exclusively. An ophthalmologist, who had gone on to follow his other passion in music by creating MCA, the Music Corporation of America, believed that this situation could and should change. This individual, Jules Stein, brought together business and philanthropic leaders who shared his vision and created Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB). The mission of RPB is to prevent and restore vision through research within academic departments of ophthalmology. Having begun their work in support of this mission, they were not done however. Under leadership from RPB and Jules Stein, the National Eye Institute was created within the National Institutes of Health allowing for increased federal support for vision research. Through this process they also created the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology, the leading organization in the country that now brings together ophthalmology department chairs, residency program directors, research directors, medical student educators, and administrators all of whom are committed to advancing the academic missions of research, education and service.
In the pages that follow, we celebrate the recognition of the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute at the IU School of Medicine as one of the select eye and vision research programs in the United States that RPB supports through its competitive application process. We owe this success to many important factors. The creation of the Glick Eye Institute provides the infrastructure for many of our research activities, along with the endowments that provide the necessary funding to make it possible for our researchers to advance their ideas, in addition to allowing us to recruit and retain outstanding scientists. We have enjoyed tremendous support as well from the IU School of Medicine, the IUPUI campus where we are located, as well as from the IU Board of Trustees and the President’s Office. Our many donors have allowed us to continue to build and advance our research capabilities.
In the end, it is our researchers who are most directly responsible. It is their ideas, hard work, and dedication that RPB recognizes with this award. To them I am grateful, and I thank them on behalf patients today and tomorrow whose lives and future will be brighter.
Philanthropic support is necessary to accelerate vision research. To learn how you can make a tax-deductible gift to benefit the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute, please contact:

“Additionally, it confirms the belief in the department that Eugene and Marilyn Glick had when they donated the significant funds that allowed the construction of the Glick Eye Institute which opened in 2011.”
“I fully believe that we are becoming one of the leading vision research institutes in the United States,” Dr.
Boulton said. “An RPB unrestricted grant will help us further the expansion of the department’s dynamic research portfolio by providing stability and flexibility in the development and expansion of our vision research programs.”
“The Department of Ophthalmology, already internationally recognized for clinical research, will benefit from this generous RPB grant as it allows for further development of the basic and translational science program,” said Dr. Cantor.
This new award builds upon the Department’s previous RPB award when Alon Harris, PhD, FARVO, received the William & Mary Greve International Research Scholar Award in 1995, a merit based award given to outstanding scholars who demonstrated excellence in research and ground-breaking findings in eye disease.
Dr. Harris said, “I am beyond thrilled to see the department recognized with this newest RPB award which will allow for growth in both basic and clinical research programs over the next five years.

Alon Harris, M.S., Ph.D., FARVO, was selected to comment on “Blood Perfusion Pressure” in the Clinical Examination Methods section of the journal International Glaucoma Review. This journal contains abstracts and reviews of glaucoma literature.
Daniel Neely, M.D., just returned from an Orbis trip to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia where he worked with pediatric cataract and strabismus patients. This was the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital’s 7th program in Mongolia, a large, remote and mostly rural country which is the least densely populated country in the world.
Lyne Racette, Ph.D., has received a grant from the BrightFocus Foundation, a nonprofit organization funding cutting-edge, innovative research on Alzheimer’s disease and the vision diseases of glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Dr. Racette was also awarded an IUPUI MURI
(Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute) award for the coming academic year. The $7,800 award will give four undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research in Dr. Racette’s lab. Dr.Racette’s proposal was titled
“Improving adherence to glaucoma treatment in patients of African descent by combining an education intervention with motivational interviewing.”
Derek Sprunger, M.D., has been appointed to the Indiana General Assembly’s Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Human Services by Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma.
Jingy Wang, Ph.D., and Lyne Racette, Ph.D. participated in the Brain-link diversity children’s lectures this summer. This series from the IUSM Division of Diversity Affairs brings 5th - 8th grade students from Indianapolis and area schoools together with experts in various healthcare-related fields The program is designed to expose students to various healthcare fields. Dr. Wang and Dr. Racette spoke about their careers and shared related hands-on visual activities.

Against the backdrop of an
exceptionally beautiful day, the second annual Indiana University Glick Eye Open golf outing, sponsored by the Glick Family Foundation, was held on July 18th at Ironwood Golf Club in Fishers.
Approximately 80 golfers and others enjoyed camaraderie on the course while learning about the missions of the Glick Eye Institute.
Researchers and faculty members from the GEI were on hand to discuss their work with the participants.
A brief video was displayed highlighting the role of private
philanthropy in funding education and research at the Glick Eye Institute.
The video along with information about the event sponsors can be viewed on the Glick Eye Institute web at www.glick.iu.edu.
