ENTOMOLOGICAL RESULTS
(2):THE METAMORPHOSES OF SOME ALASKA COLEOPTERA.
[Plates
xxii-xxvi.]
By Trevor Kincaid.
The study
ofthe adultforms
oftheColeoptera
presentssuch
a vast fieldand
is ofsuch
a fascinatingcharacter
thatbut
scant attentionhas been paid
to the early stages of themembers
ofthis order.
This
is especially true inAmerica, where very
little
has been published on
this subject,and
as a resultwe know but
littleconcerning
the structureor peculiar habits of the larvae ofour indigenous
beetles.In
theU.
S.National Mu- seum
is alarge
collection ofcoleopterous
larvae,accumulated mainly through
the efforts ofMr. E. A. Schwarz,
of that insti- tution,but
themajority
of the specieshave never been
described.An opinion
isprevalent
that it isextremely
difficult to rearthe larv£e of beetles,
but
the writer believes this supposition tobe exaggerated.
It is certainly difficult to rearthem from
theegg
orvery young
stages,but
ifspecimens be taken when
nearly
fullgrown and
carefullytended they may be bred
with- outexcessive
mortality.Proc. Wash, Acad. Sci,, November, 1900. (3^7)
Under
thecircumstances,
the writer feels that thefollowing paper
will notbe unwelcome, although
itmay be imperfect
insome
respects,owing
to the fact thatno comparison has been
possible, in the
majority
of cases,with
closeh^ relatedforms.
