JudulSkripsi : Using direct method to improve speaking skill in second grade SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate (pre-experimental research). JudulSkripsi : Using Direct Method to Improve Speaking Skills in Second Grade SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate (Pre-Experimental Research). Using the direct method to improve speaking skills in the second grade of SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar”.

This research aimed to find out the improvement of students' speaking skill by using the direct method in the second grade students of SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar. The research results indicated that the second grade students of SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar were very low in speaking skills. Speaking skills must be developed and practiced independently of the other aspect of language such as grammar and listening.

Based on the above reason, the solution offered by the researcher is to use the direct method in teaching to improve students' speaking skills. The direct method, also known as the natural method or the conversational method. Based on the above explanation and benefits, the researcher is interested in conducting a research titled “Using Direct Method to Improve Speaking Skills in Second Grade SMP PGRI 1 TAMALATE.

Problem Statement

Subyako-Nababan (1993:16) explains the strengths of the direct method: students always pay attention, students know a lot about words, have native pronunciation, and often try to engage in conversation, especially topics that are discussed in class. taught.

Objective of The Research

To find out the use of direct method to improve students' speaking fluency in second grade SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate.

Theories of speaking

  • Definition of Speaking
  • Aspect of Speaking
  • Problems in Speaking
  • Teaching Speaking
  • Assesing Speaking

Brown and Yule stated that speaking depends on the complexity of the information to be communicated;. Pollard (2008:33) points out that speaking is one of the most difficult aspects for students to master. In addition, English is one of the subjects that must be taught in the educational program in Indonesia.

If they want to be successful in achieving the goal of the study, students must have a positive attitude towards the people who speak the language they want to acquire. They can only generate sentences using words, so it is impossible to speak fluently without mastering vocabulary. Students are often inhibited in trying to say things in foreign languages in the classroom: worried about mistakes or simply shy of the attention that their speech attracts.

Students find it easier to use their mother tongue in class because it looks natural. Therefore, most students are not disciplined in using the target language in the learning process.

Theories of Direct Method

Because the game format is playful, the natural challenge of new difficult material is much less threatening than it usually is. According to Nababan (1993:16), the use of direct method states that learner can have pronunciation like native speakers, learner knows many words. Besides learners often try the conversation, especially topics that have teaching in the classroom.

The direct method was a first attempt to experience language directly in language learning. It required creativity on the part of teachers and led to the development of new techniques in teaching a language, such as demonstrating pictures and objects, emphasizing questions and answers, spoken accounts, dictation and imitation. Teachers may ask questions about the reading to check comprehension, but it is never translated.

This method has principles that can be used by private schools that have few lessons and students.

Conceptual Framework

Direct method will be investigated on how it will stimulate the student to participate more actively during the class, as well as investigate how students' ability to answer the teacher's question. After the treatment, the researcher would conduct the post-test to find out whether the direct Method can effectively improve the students' ability in speaking skills. In speaking skill, there will be two main points as the main focus to be noticed.

It is about how they enrich their vocabulary knowledge to be able to speak correctly. It's about how fluent they are when they speak, can they speak more naturally without seeming to be taking time to think about what they want to say. Null hypothesis (HO) that Direct Method is not effective to improve students' speaking skills.

Variable and indicators

Population and sample

The comparison between pre-test and post-test was used to know if the use of Direct Method was effective to improve students' speaking skills. The table shows the accuracy of students' speech in the calculation result of the pre-test and post-test of students using the Direct Method in speech. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the use of the Direct Method could improve the students' speaking accuracy by percentage (35.5%).

The conclusion can be drawn that the use of Direct Method can improve the students' speaking fluency. It can be concluded that the use of Direct Method was effective in improving the students' speaking skills with the percentage (35.90%). The frequency and rate percentage of the students' score presents the result of the students' speaking performance in terms of accuracy and fluency through the use of Direct Method.

This was supported by the average score and percentage of the students' result on the pre- and post-test. After comparing the preliminary research results, it can be concluded that the use of the Direct Method could improve the speaking skills of the students. The data described shows that the score of the students is a success in improving the speaking accuracy and fluency of the students using the direct method.

In other words, it can be concluded that the use of the direct method was effective in improving students' speaking skills in terms of accuracy and fluency in the second grade of SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate. Using the direct method to improve students' vocabulary mastery (Action research in the class of fifth-year students of SD negeryWonokertoBancak, in the academic year 2009/2010).
