THEORETICAL REVIEW

The Concept of Reading

  • Definition of Reading
  • Definition of Reading Strategies
  • Concept of Reading Comprehension
  • Skill and Strategies To Learn Reading
  • Reading Models
  • Reading Principles

Many of the skills and strategies needed for reading text already appear in beginning readers in their ability to understand language. A major objective of reading text is to help students improve their skills and texts if they are to be proficient readers. In this review paper, researchers define the term text reading and reading strategies, elaborate on previous findings about the relationship between reading strategies and reading comprehension, state the factors that influence text reading, explain effective strategies for reading of the text and at the end mention the suggestions for improving the reading of the text.

The findings of this review paper showed that appropriate reading strategies play a key role in improving EFL learners' text reading. In these terms, reading a text is quite similar to understanding factual information from written sources along with the reader's knowledge. Moreover, Brown believes that reading a text is fundamental because it is a good way to recognize what we read.8 While Janette argues that reading comprehension consists of several components.

Based on Barret's Taxonomy of Reading text Levels, there are several stages of differentiation which will be further explained below.10 1) Recall (Literal Recognition) Level. The use of effective comprehension strategies is very important when students want to improve their reading text. That is, students will develop stronger reading texts on their own if teachers provide them with mental instruments to understand a text.

EFL teachers should formulate these types of questions by thinking aloud before, during and after reading a text. Visualization is a mental image created in a reader's mind while reading a text that brings words to life and helps them improve their reading. Based on the above explanations to improve text reading are mutual education, instructional conversations, visualization, partner reading, multiple reading strategies, assessment, and running records.

The Concept of Reading Difficulties

  • Factors that Cause Reading Difficulties to EFL Learners
  • Fluency Factors
  • Linguistic and Cognitive Factors of Reading Text
  • Factors Affecting Reading Comprehension Skill
  • Purpose of the Reading Activity
  • Problem of reading

Whether or not the student as a reader is interested in the reading material will affect the comprehension score. Not only do you stop at these matters, other reading factors besides the text have a great influence on the student's reading of the text. This thing can be in the form of the surrounding situations when the students as readers are reading as the state of the reader, the convenience of the reading place, the moment when the reading is taking place, etc.

They are complexity of the reading text, environmental influences, anxiety while reading the text, interest and motivation, decoding or word recognition speed, and medical problems. One of the factors that influence students' reading text is the complexity of the texts. Students who experience this anxiety may not fully understand the instructions and this can lead to confusion and poor understanding of the reading task.

If readers find reading monotonous, they will have a lot of trouble focusing on their understanding. If teachers can do this, the reading activity can be considered successful and reading comprehension can be gained. The genre of the reading material can also be determined by the student, since the reader cannot understand the text alone.

The students themselves have low expectations as they do not want to understand or comprehend the reading material.
