Childfree is the decision taken by a couple not to have children based on mutual agreement, either biologically (not getting pregnant), adopting or other means.

Methodology

Method

The research uses descriptive qualitative methods by emphasizing the childfree phenomenon. The focus is on individual prespective or perceptions of childfree. The research uses reception analysis where the audience is an active party who receives and produces meaning.

The data

Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to respondents via google form.

Then, the data is classified and analyzed using A stuart Hall Cultural Circuit. Secondary data used journals, reliable internet sources and books.

Globalization has brought technological advancements, particularly the internet and social media, which provide wide access to information and experiences from

different countries. Individuals in Indonesia can be exposed to the views, stories and experiences of childfree people in other countries, which can influence their thinking about childfree living options.

Contributions from public figures and influencers who openly voice their arguments and views on childfree. By having a wide platform, they can provide a deeper understanding and insight into the reasons behind the decision, such as the challenges and benefits of being childfree.

Community Figure

Online forums and communities dedicated to discussing childfree topics. Forums such as the r/childfree subreddit or childfree community websites provide a space for individuals to share experiences, give insights into childfree, and discuss childfree living. Thus, Indonesians can access these forums to gain further understanding of the childfree phenomenon.

The Childfree Community

Childfree is not acceptable or tolerated by Indonesian society, because it is considered contrary to the norms or customs that apply in society.

Society is more accepting of childlessness, a condition of childlessness caused by

circumstances, such as not being able to have offspring due to physical or biological conditions (medical conditions).

The respondents already knew about the childfree lifestyle, some of them knew about it from the internet and social media.

Respondents’ knowledge

Respondents consider childfree as something positive and negative. According to respondents, childfree can be something positive and the right choice if there are clear reasons such as economic conditions, where the couple thinks about the future of their children and family; second, the couple wants to stay young and healthy naturally. Conversely, childfree becomes something negative if it is done without a clear basis and just wants to follow trends.

Perception of Childfree

The dominant respondent for not doing childfree is not wanting to break the lineage. Meanwhile, some respondents who chose to go childfree reasoned that it was one of the steps that had to be taken when they were not financially capable.

Regarding the pros and cons of childfree, respondents are more likely to be neutral parties, which means that respondents respect each other's decisions, because it is actually those who run it who can decide.

Pros and cons

The childfree phenomenon is a relatively new concept in Indonesia, but it is gaining

popularity among young people. The study found that most Untag Surabaya students are aware of the child-free phenomenon, and many of them have positive views on it.

However, there are also some who have

negative views, and they believe that childfree is contrary to religious, social and traditional values.

The study also found that the main factors that influence Untag Surabaya students to choose childfree are economic factors and lack of readiness to be parents. Some students also choose childfree because they believe that it is the best way to live their lives.

CONCLUSION

The study concludes that the childfree phenomenon is a complex issue with both pros and cons. It is important to respect the choices of

individuals who choose to be

childfree, and to understand

the reasons why they made this

decision.
