Allhamdulillahhirobbil'alamin, all praise be to Allah, the only power, the Lord of the universe, the master of the Day of Judgment, for all the blessings and mercies, so that the researcher was able to complete this thesis “Politeness strategy used by the examiner in thesis proposal Online Examination of the Department of English Education at IAIN Surakarta". The researcher is sure that this thesis would not be completed without the help, support and suggestion of several parties. Thus, the researcher would like to express her deepest thanks to all those who have helped, supported and suggested during the process of writing this thesis.

A researcher interested in analyzing the politeness strategy used by an examiner in an online thesis proposal exam. This research examines the politeness strategy used by interviewers and the factors that influence politeness strategy use. Based on the above description, the research is entitled “Politeness Strategy Used by the Examiner in the Online Exam for the English Language Thesis Proposal at IAIN Surakarta”.

In this research, the researcher analyzed the politeness strategy used by the examiner in the online examination of the English Language Education thesis proposal at IAIN Surakarta. What are the types of politeness strategy used by the examiner in the English Language Education thesis proposal online exam at IAIN Surakarta. What are the factors influencing the use of politeness strategy by the examiner in the online exam thesis proposal of English Language Education at IAIN Surakarta.

To investigate the types of politeness strategies used by the examiner in the thesis proposal in the online exam in English Language Education at IAIN Surakarta. Providing more information and useful references to the readers about the practice of politeness strategy used by the examiner in the online examination of the thesis proposal.

This external context is the context of communication, which is determined by the social status of the participants. Bare on-record strategies fail to capture any effort by speakers to minimize the impact of the FTAs. Brown and Levinson (1987:70) define politeness as the strategy that orients the speaker toward the positive face or self-image of the hearer that the speaker claims for himself.

One way to defuse the FTA is to suggest that the intrinsic severity of the imposition is not great, even if it is. This strategy is done by giving hints; that S invites H to look for interpretation of the possible relevance. This strategy is carried out by being vague about who the target of the FTA is or what the offense is.

Context plays a significant role in pragmatics because it determines the interpretation of the utterances made by the speaker. Pragmatic context includes involves the type of communicative event, the topic of the event, the purpose of the event, the setting of the event, including place, time of day, season, and physical aspect of the situation (e.g., the size of the room, the arrangement of the furniture, etc.) , the participant and the relationship between them, and the background knowledge and the premise underlying the communication event.

Previous Study

In Basic Speaking Unit 1, the teacher used three types of politeness strategies; Bald on the plate, positive politeness and negative politeness. The second entitled “A Case Study of a Lecturer's Politeness Strategy in an International Classroom at a West Midlands University” written by Misnariah Idrus (2017). The aim of this qualitative case study is to explore the types of politeness strategies used by a teacher in an international classroom at West Midlands University and how these are perceived by the students.

The purpose of this research is not only to analyze the use of politeness strategy, but also the factors that influence the use of politeness strategy. There are similarities in the analysis of the politeness strategy using Brown's and Levinson's theories and the observation techniques used in data collection. The similarities are that this study used a politeness strategy that used Brown and Levinson's theory and recording as data collection.

It is not only to analyze the kind of politeness strategies, but also how they were perceived by the students. The subject of this study is a lecturer in an international classroom at a West Midlands University.

The experimenter used a positive politeness strategy in a sub-strategy that involved S and H in a date activity. The examiner used the strategy of positive politeness in the sub-strategy of involving S and H in activity v. The statement above shows that the examiner asked the student about the research question.

The statement above shows that the examiner asked the student about the clear voice of the examiner. From the statement above, it appears that the examiner asked the student about the survey data.
