The purpose of this research was to show increasing use of spelling bee games on students' vocabulary mastery at Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan Junior High School of Metro. By using spelling bee games, students could share their idea like the meaning of words. The result of this research showed that the implementation of Spelling Bee Games was successful as the criteria for success were achieved.

Hasil observasi menunjukkan bahwa dengan menggunakan spelling games, sebagian besar siswa terlibat aktif dalam proses pembelajaran. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menunjukkan adanya peningkatan penggunaan permainan spelling bee dalam penguasaan kosa kata siswa di SMP Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan Metro. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan permainan Spelling Bee berhasil mencapai indikator yang telah ditentukan.

This bachelor's thesis is a requirement to fulfill the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan (S.Pd) in English Education Study Program entitled: "The Use of Spelling Bee Games to Increase Students' Vocabulary Mastery at Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan Junior High School of Metro". Widhiya Ninsiana, M.Hum and co-sponsor Ahmad Subhan Roza, M.Pd who have given their helpful idea and guided way to write this bachelor thesis. The researcher also does not forget to appreciate all the help and support of the teachers of English Education Study Program, the staff of Tarbiyah and Teacher Education Faculty and all friends.

Therefore, criticism and suggestions are needed to build this undergraduate thesis to get better.

Objectives and Benefits of The Research 1. Objectives of The Research

Vocabulary is one of the elements that completes students' access to the important ideas and concepts of the subject. From this fact, we can conclude that learning vocabulary is simply a reason to learn a language. Based on the above explanation, the researcher assumes that vocabulary is a quantity of words that can be clearly understood that include meaning, form and function by learners to achieve the goal of language learning as a means of communication.

Adverbs; are words that explain how the job is done, where is the place, when the event happens. Preposition; words that show the relationship between nouns, pronouns and other words in the sentences or paragraph. It is clear that vocabulary is the essential part in learning English because we use the language for communication, whether it is spoken or written, consists of vocabulary.

The Concept Of Spelling Bee Games

In the observation session, there were five games included in five combinations of game types. However, in the interview session, the teacher did not mention the game in the observation session. She only mentioned some games in general, such as scrambled words, spelling games, guessing things using key words, and other word games.13.

Spelling Bee competitions help children improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary and develop correct use of English. In the end, Spelling Bee is a kind of competition or game where the contestants have to compete to spell words correctly and out loud.18 Spelling Bee is more than a memorization activity as it requires students to memorize words and also introduces them to a complex thinking process. when they receive more clues to spell the word correctly, such as definition, alternative pronunciation, types of words (noun, adjective, verb) and the use of words in a sentence. The Spelling bee game is one of many alternative activities that could be used to teach vocabulary to students. 19 Students will have several advantages of learning vocabulary through the Spelling bee game.

Sometimes students need a pleasant atmosphere to relax their mind in the way to get lesson taught by the teacher. It is considered a complicated thought process. McPherson stated in Anisa Rohmawati that one of the benefits of Spelling Bee is that this game was once used as an activity or competition to motivate the students, and it was seen as an opportunity for good spellers to show the ability of memorizing words with correct spelling.20.

Action research is a form of collective self-reflective inquiry undertaken by participants in a social situation to improve the rationality and justice of their own social or educational practices, as well as their understanding of these practices. The approach is only action research when it is collaborative, although it is important to realize that the action research of the group is achieved through the critically examined actions of individual group members. 21. In this step of research procedure, the researcher will directly observe the process of teaching and learning in the classroom and collect a pre-survey data from the students.

In this step, the researcher will conduct an action research on the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan in several cycles. The researcher will discuss with the English teacher about measures to solve the existing problems. In addition, the researcher will give the students a pre-test, and then in the following meetings, the implementation of the actions will follow, and in the last action there will be a post-test.

Therefore, the researcher will play the game as a teacher and work in collaboration with the collaboration partner (English teacher). When the researcher as a teacher uses Spelling Bee Games in vocabulary teaching, the English teacher as a collaborator observes the process of teaching and learning with the observation sheet which is. In this step, the researcher will collect the date collected by the observer about the students' response, participation, performance and everything found during the teaching and learning process.

In this step, the researcher will analyze the data and make a reflection of the actions. If the result of the actions does not show the improvement of the students in the ability to write advertisements as in the success indicator, then the researcher will do the next cycle.

Data Collection Technique

Observation is a pillar of action research that enables the researcher to systematically document and reflect on classroom interactions and events27. The observation in this study will be carried out to monitor the teaching and learning process before, during and after the implemented actions. In this case, the researcher will use two observation techniques; direct observation and checklist to obtain the information.28.

Documentation is used to obtain information consisting of public and private data required in the form of newspapers, meeting minutes, personal diaries, and letters obtained about a location or participants in a study.29 The documentation in this study will be used to collect the data in the form of photos and images. The photos are collected using a camera phone or a digital camera, while the photos are collected by the school's archive. In this case, the pre-test is conducted before implementing the Spelling Bee Games to first measure the writing skills of the students.

A field note refers to notes made by a researcher during the act of qualitative fieldwork to remember and record behaviors, activities, events, and other characteristics of an observation. Notes can represent the entire data collected for a research study [eg. observational project] or contribute to it, for example when field notes supplement conventional interview data.32.

From the above data, the researcher concluded that the students' .. score on vocabulary mastery was poor. At the end of the meeting, the researcher gave feedback to the students about the learning process. From the result of pre-test and post-test I it can be analyzed that there was an improvement compared to the result score of the students.

This table should describe the comparison of students' results in post-test I and post-test II. From the result of the students' scores in the pre-test and post-test I, there was an improvement in relation to the students' result scores. Based on the results of the students' scores from post-test II, it could be concluded that there was an improvement in the students' scores.

Based on the results of the pretest, posttest I and posttest II, it was determined that there was an improvement in the students' performance.
