TWO NEW SUBTERRANEAN CRUSTACEANS FROM THE UNITED STATES.
BY W.
P.HAY.
During
a recent visit to theMammoth Cave
ofKentucky, and Nickajack Cave
in Tennessee, the writerwas
fortunateenough
to obtainfrom
the former twelve specimens of a small eyeless shrimp, and from
the latterabout asmany
specimensof an Isopod crustacean belonging to thegenus
CcecidoteaPack
ard.
The shrimp
on examination proves to be so distinctfrom
all the Palc&monidcK hitherto described as to necessitate the erec tion of anew
genus.The
Isopod, as itcame from
the type locality of Ccecidotea nickajackensisPackard was
at firstthought to be that species, but a careful comparison with Dr.
Packard's description
and
figuresand with
specimens of C.nickajackensis
from
wellsat Metcalf, Georgia,shows
that it is distinct. The new genus
and thetwo new
speciesmay
be described as follows:Palaemonias gen. nov.
Similar toPalccmonetes in form and in the absence of a mandibular palpus. Gillsfourandarudiment on eachside. Rostrumlong, slender
