SpedfiG diagnosis.
— Viannma: Small, spirally coiled nematodes,
bright redwhen
freshly collected. Cephaliccuticle inflated,marked
with distinct annular striations; cuticular inflation 90^to 100/x long
and
38ju, to 40|a wide. Cuticle elsewhere marked
with extremely fine
transverse and
longitudinal striations. Thickness of head 27ju, with-
out the cuticular inflation. Esophagus
350jii to 400/i long and

at its termination.Male:

lateral rays are comparatively short; the externo-laterals are directed slightly for- ward, divergingfrom
the other laterals; the medio-lateralsand
postero-laterals are parallel; the medio-laterals are the thickest of the rays
and
they curve distally before reaching the bursalmargin
;
the postero-laterals are straight.
The
externo-dorsal rays are very delicateand
slenderwithslightlycurvedtips; the dorsalray hastwo
long bifurcations,which
apparently again divide at the tips; the dorsaland
externo-dorsal rays are extremely difficult to findand
to studybecausethey areobscuredby
a dense cuticularextension on the inside of the bursa.The
spicules are filiformand
are 630^ to 650/*long.
Gubernaculum
present, lightly chitinized, about 55/t to 60/*long.

long, tightly rolled in about 10 to 12 spirals.The
muscular ovejector is about 160/t to 180/a long.The
tail ends in a blunt point.The
distancefrom
the vulva to the anus is 120/x,and from
the anus to the tip of the tail 40ju,.The
lips of the vulva areslightly elevated above thebody
margin. Eggs, 55ju,by
40/i.The
single ovary, uterus,and
ovejector in the female place thisnematode
in the family Heligmosomidae. It has been placed in the genus Viannaia because it resembles themembers
of this genus in the formula of the rays of the bursaand
in the absence ofmarked
longitudinal cuticular striae. It differs
from them
in themuch
greaterlength of the spicules, the greatest length of the spicules for the species previously included in the genus being 255ja. It resem- bles the genus Longistriata in the length of the spicules but differs
from
it in the absence of the longitudinal cuticular striations char- acteristic of the genus. It differsfrom
both genera in the presence, within the bursa, of a dense cuticular swelling,which
renders the studyof the origin of the rays very difficult.Two
sets of specimens wereavailable for study.The
nematodesin thefirstsetwerecollect-ed
aliveand
werekilledand
fixed inhot alcoholand
glycerine.The
second setwas
collectedfrom
the viscera ofan opossum
sent to the laboratoryfrom
Louisiana,and
thismaterialwas
preservedinforma-lin.
In
the first set, killedand
fixed in hot alcohol, the structure within the bursa isquite noticeable. In thesecond set of specimens this structure seems to have partly disintegrated,and
the bursal rays can be studied with less difficulty.Host.

Among
the nematodes collectedfrom
the stomach of theopossum
therewas found
onemale
gnathostome. This specimen resembles in a generalway Gnathostoma turgidum
Stossich, 1902, as redescribedby
Travassos (1925), but differsfrom
it in one respect. It agrees withGnathostoma
turgidum, in its host, both being collectedfrom
the opossum,in its size,in thenumber
ofrows
of spineson
thehead
bulb, in the characterand
extent of thebody
spines,and
in the sizeof the small spicule.
The
spineson
thebody
immediately behind thehead
are broadand
shortwith 10 to 12 teeth, the spines immedi- ately behindthe esophagus areleaf-like with about6 teeth,the spines near theend
of the spinous area have 3 teeth, then follow spineswith
2 teeth, succeeded in turnby
single-toothed spines in denselyART.31

of caudal papillae. Travassosstates that there are nine pairs of caudal papillae ofwhich
one pair is ventraland

eight pairs are lateral; of the eight lateral pairs, three pairs are preanal,two
are adanal,and
three are postanal.Our
specimen has five, possibly six, pairs ofcaudalpapillae, ofwhich
four pairs are large,pedunculated,and
lateral,two
pairs of these being preanaland two
pairs postanal;
the fifth pair is located just in front of the fourth pair of laterals;
there
may
be a pair of adanal papillae placed ventrally, but this could not be determined with certainty. In another specimen ofGnathostoma
collectedfrom
thestomach of anopossum
(Bur.Anim.
Ind.
Helm.
Coll. No. 26831), only the four pairs of lateral papillae can bemade
out with certainty.In
thenumber
of caudal papillae ourspecimen agreeswithGnathostoma
spinigerumand Gnathostoma
gracUe. It differsfrom
the former in size, in the characterand
location of the spines,
and
in the size of the small spicule; it differsfrom
the latterin the character ofthespines.This nematode, of
which
only two.maleswere
available for study, has been calledGnathostoma turgidum
provisionally in spite of the difference here noted.When more
material becomes available itmay
bepossible to determine whether thenumber and
positionof the caudal papillae aresufficientlyconstant toserve asspecific characters of anew
species.The
remainder of the parasitic material collectedfrom
theopossum
consists of nematodes, trematodes, cestodes,and
fleas.The
nematodes are Physaloptera turgida, Cr-uzia tentaculata^Oesophagostomum.
sp., Trichostrongylus sp.,and
T?^churis sp.Of
thelast three,only femaleswere collected,
and no
specific determina- tion has been attempted.The
trematodes areNeodiplostomwn
lucidum, Harviostomum, sp.,Rhopalias sp.,
and Echinostomum
sp. These were identifiedby
Dr.E.
W.
Price, of the zoological division.The
cestodes are Mesocestoides sp.The
fleaswere
determinedby
Dr. H.'E.Ewing,
of theBureau
ofEntomology,
as Rhopalopsyllus gwyni^ a species of a neotropical genus, ofwhich
only afew
records have beenmade
in the southern part of theUnited
