THE NON-BRACHYURAN DECAPOD CRUSTACEANS OF CLIPPERTON ISLAND

very useful description

historical account of the Island, as well as a bibliography of earlier studies, has been givenby
Sachet (1960).Due
to the efforts of biologistsfrom
the Scripps Institution ofOceanography
of theUniversity ofCalifornia,who
visited the Island aboard the Spencer F. Baird in 1954, 1956,and
1958, collections arenow
available for a significant analysis of that fauna.The
lateConrad Limbaugh was
largely responsible for the fine collectionsmade
in 1956and
1958.Not
only the Scripps material,but
also thatwhich formed
the basis for theRathbun and
Schmitt studies, wereexamined
ffor the presentJreport.The
Scripps collections ex- actly doubled thenumber
of species ofmacruran and anomuran
decapods previouslyknown from
Clipperton, but theefforts ofWaldo
L. Schmitt,
who
obtained 11 of the 24known
species in a few hours during the Presidential Cruise of 1938, cannot be minimized.That
the fauna is not yet completelyknown
is indicatedby
the failure of either the Presidential Cruise or the Scripps parties to collect the605

African specimen isthe proportionately longer antennal scale in the latter. In the specimens
from
Clipperton, the spine of the scale reaches about as far as the end of the antennular peduncleand
falls far short of the end of the antennalpeduncle; in theGhana
specimen, it reaches wellbeyond
the end of the antennular peduncleand
nearly as far as the antennalpeduncle.On
theotherhand,Banner

variation in the proportions of the antennulesand
antennae inHawaiian
material,and
theexaminationofsevenHawaiian
specimens identifiedby Banner
as Crangon paracrinita bengalensis has disclosed one specimen in which the antennal scale is nearly as long as it is in the onefrom Ghana.
It is probable, therefore, that only one species is representedby
the materialexamined from
the eastern Atlanticand
the eastern Pacific,and
it is doubtful that Coutiere's subspecies will be tenablewhen more abundant
material is available for comparison.Distribution:

off north- eastern Brazil,Panama,

pantropical distribution is indicated, but the identity of the Atlanticand

The
smallest ovigerous female, with a carapace lengthof 5.6mm.,
carries onlytwo
eggs,and
allovigerous femaleswith carapace lengthsofless than 7.1
mm., have
feweggs. All 51 femaleswith carapacelengthsofmore
than7.8mm.,
are ovigerous, including those collected in August, September,
and
October.Most
of the specimens, except the smallestand
the largest,have
a ratherprominent, outstanding toothon
theouter surfaceof themajor
chela near the distal margin of the socket in the fixed finger.The
fewHawaiian
specimens of similar size thathave
been available for comparison alsohave
this tooth, butit is obscure in the neotype.Two
ofthe specimensin the present collection are so aberrant that they were first thought to representa distinct species.One
of them, amale
with a carapace length of 8.6mm., from
Sta.W58-289,
lacks a rostrumand
has a very longand narrow major
chela; the entire chela ismore
thantwo and
a half times as long as broad,and
the fingers are longer than the palm.The
other, amale
with a carapace length of 10.2mm., from
Sta.W58-295,
has anormal
rostrumbut an evenmore
elongatemajor
chela; it ismore
thantwo and
two-thirds times aslong as broad,and
the fingers are about aslong as the palm.These two
specimens fall within thenormal
limits of variation of A. pacificus in all otherrespects, however, so it is probable that they are merelyabnormal
specimens of that species, even though their correct identificationwould have
beenpracticallyimpossiblehad
they not been associated withnormal
specimens.One
of the ovigerous females taken onSeptember
13, 1958, hastwo major
chelipeds, the leftslightly thelarger.Distribution:

Only
athorough studyoftheentirefamilycan determine whether the absenceofpereiopodal epipods inPomagnathus and
their presence in the superficially similar species ofAlpheus is of sufficient importance to justify the retention of the genus.Distribution:

Remarks: The two
specimens without eggs are probablymales, as indicatedby
theform
oftheabdominal
pleuraand
pleopods;each has acarapacelengthof 3.1mm. The
specimen withacarapacelengthof 4.7mm.
isreferred to this species withsome
doubt, foritlacks all of the pereiopods; the largest specimen that is identified with certainty has a carapacelength ofonly 3.9mm.
There seems to be considerable variation in this species as regards the breadth of the rostrum, the proportions of the segments of the antennular peduncle, the length of the stylocerite, the length of the

terminal spine
on
the antennal scale, the divergence of the ventral spineon
the dactyls of the last three pereiopods,and
the disposition of the dorsal spineson
the telson. In all ofthe specimens examined, including the neotype, both pairs of dorsal spines are situatedon
the posterior half of the telson, rather than as indicated in Banner's descriptionand
figure.The
neotype also has the rostrum consider- ably narrowerand
the ventral spines of theambulatory
dactylsmore
divergent than in the specimen figuredby

of the 22 specimens with carapacelengths of 2.6mm.
orlesshave thesecond dorsalrostral tooth small or absent.Of
the 35 larger specimens with intact rostra, only sevenhave
the second dorsal tooth reduced or missing. These seven specimens range in carapace lengthfrom
2.7 to 4.5mm.;
only one of the four largest is a male, so the reduction of the second tooth is probably not a sexual character. All but three of the 22 specimens with lessthan
two
ventral rostral teeth are less than 3.0mm.

onlynine of the 28 specimensof this sizehave more

branches of the upper antennular flagellum are fused to a variable extent inlargespecimens, but the length of the fused portion variesrather constantlywith sizeinyoung
individuals. In specimens with carapace lengths of 2.0and

the fused portion is longer than thefreeportion ofthe shorter branch;inone apparentlyaberrant specimen with a carapace length of 2.0mm.,
the fused part is ten times as long as the free part but usually it is not nearly twice as long.At

free parts are approximately equal.From

the fused partis always shorter than the free part but distinctly

than half as long. In larger specimens the fused portion variesfrom

of the three males, eight ovigerous females,and
one cephalothoraxfrom
theHawaiian
Islands with the Clipperton speci-mens
disclosed minor, but possibly significant, differences. In three of theHawaiian
specimens, the posterior ventral rostral tooth isbehind or opposite the anterior dorsal tooth; in all but
two
of the Clipperton specimens both ventral teeth,when
present, are well in advanceof the anterior dorsal tooth. All oftheHawaiian
specimens, inwhich
the carapace measuresfrom
2.6 to 3.6mm.

different parts of the range of L. trisetacea can be compared.Although Lysmata
galapagensis Schmitt is very similar to L.trisetacea,re-examination of the type series of that species has
shown

is sinuous basally, faintly convex distally,and
it curves gradually into the true distal margin withoutany
indication of an angle,much
as inDe Man's
figure; in the
male and
the ovigerous female with a carapace length of 10.8mm.,

overlooked in the specimens from the Galapagos Islandsand

doubt that C.grandimana
is a distinct species.As
Schmitt pointed out, the "secondsegment"
of themajor
cheliped describedby
Gibbeswas
certainly the ischium, as indicatedby
hisCLIPPERTON

"correction" of Say's description of the cheliped of C. major:
"what
he calls first joint of thehand
is reallythe carpus; his carpus [merus]is the third joint or segment,
and
so on." Gibbes's reference to"distant granules" on the lower edge of the ischium could hardly
be
applied to the long, prominent spines on thatsegment
in Balss's specimen. Hult's understandable difficultyin reconciling the charac- ters citedby
Schmitt (1935) with Balss's descriptionand
figurewas
causedby
the inadvertent transposition of thenames
in the last couplet ofthekey;itwill beseen that the characters given in thefirst half ofthat couplet forC. longiventris agreewith those givenby
Balss.De Man
noted the similaritybetween
C. placidaand
C. coutierei Nobili, but the different form of the eyes is probably sufficient to distinguish thelatter species.The

considerable variation in the six Clipperton specimens.The
