The
Staphylinidae of theCayman
Islandsmust
beassumed
to be very imperfectlyknown
atthe presenttime. It is tobe expectedthat intensive collecting in various habitatswould
produce at least 50 species.For
example, the threeWest
Indian species of Gafius prob- ably occuron
the beaches,and
others of the widespread species un- doubtedly will be found.The
present state of ourknowledge
there- forepresentslittlethatmay
beusedinstudyingthegeographicalrela- tionships or the origin of the fauna.In
general, however,thespecies areamong
thosewhich would
be expectedto occur.The
only excep- tionsareoneknown
otherwiseonlyfrom Antigua
inthe Lesser Antillesand
oneknown
otherwise onlyfrom
the United States.The

following account of the collection of these beetles has been sent tome by Mr. Lewis
:"On May
29, 1938,Thompson and
I setup
light-traps in three areas, one of these being on the southern side of a deadmangrove swamp
northofSouthTown,
the only settlementon the island.The
traps were of anew
design, usingan
acetylenelamp
surroundedby
fourfunnels,eachofwhich was
suppliedwith akilling jar.The
trapswereallstartedatabout7:30eachnight."On
the first night, aftertwo
hours of o])eration, the trap at the edgeof theswamp had
been put outof actionby
the tremendous vol-ume
of insects ithad
received.Most
ofthem
were this staphylinid.A
quantitativemethod
of counting the specimenswas
used,and
itwas found
that at least25,000 specimensofthis specieswere taken in that 2-hour period.The
trapwas
then cleared, cleaned,and

31, the trapwas removed from

of the otherinsectstaken wereinsuchbad
conditionasaresultof thehordes ofBlediusthatthey werequite useless."The
