straight parts of thelateral line about equal in extent.Caranx
elacata is probably this species, also C. marginatusand
the type of C. rlidbdotus.The
cotype of C. rJiabdotus is quite differentfrom
thetype inmany
charactersand
is probably adifferent species.Both
are very young.Specimens from Hawaii
were first identified as C. latusand
later published as C. forsteri.They
are apparentlyall C. melampygus.

fewer scutes.Also the scutes
on
the Australianspecimens aremuch
larger.This specimen agrees well with the description of C. leptolepis, the type of
which came
originallyfrom
Java, except that the snout is a httle shorter than there recorded. This discrepancymay
be parth''due
to differences inmethod
ofmeasurement.
If the snout of our specimen ismeasured from

scales indicating the position of the reduced ven-tral fins.
These
scales are almost invisible to thenaked
eye, but arereadilyapparentunder
alenswhen
theirposition has beenshown by
the use of a veiy fine dissecting needle.A
coarserneedlewould
be apt to destroythem
withoutgivingan
indicationof theirpresence.We have
not been able to find these scales in otherspecimensexam-
ined.
The
species of Trichiurus are soverysimilarinappearanceand
the various individuals of a single speciesshow
such great difi'erences, especially indepth
ofbody
anilm
relative lengthof the various sec- tions of the body, that it is probablewe must
look for differentiid characters in the internalanatomy
or elsegreatlyreduce thenumber
ofnominalspecies.
Trichiurus lepturus is plaiidy distinguished
