White Mountains, New Hampshire; but in this species the apex of the first vein is far in advance of the apex of the anterior branch of the heel, the accessory cross-vein is wanting, &c. In this and other structural features it agrees very well with the members of the present family. Black, second antennal joint and base of third, palpi, halteres, coxae, femora and male hypopygium yellow, tibiae brownish yellow; body hair yellow; the thorax is subtransparent, thin gray, dry;.
It spans the northern part of the United States and extends as far south as New Jersey, Kansas, and southern California. Originally described from Pennsylvania; to the east it does not appear to occur south of the said state, but extends north-. Schiner's description and figures except in the structure of the legs, but these are not sufficiently different to warrant the establishment of a separate genus for the present form.
Black, the buds of the halteres and the hairs on the apical part of the male antennae, and the whole antennae of the female, whitish; thorax polished, abdomen opaque; thigh bones slender, without thorny bristles, first tarsal joint at least twice as long as the second, the last joint below not spiny, claws small and of equal size; wings hyaline, glabrous, the third vein on its basal fourth united with the first. Vein, tip of the latter almost opposite to the apex of the first third of the third vein, apex of the third vein about three-quarters of the wing length, petiole of the second posterior cell slightly shorter than the small transverse vein.

Legs and venter of abdomen dark brown, proboscis shorter than height of head, hipipegium of malev^holly and sparsely covered with bristle hairs, bare of a tuft of these hairs, the dorsal piece bearing a pair of long, subcylindrical, fleshy processes, which is covered with short hairs, filament free. Classified by its short proboscis, this species would be placed in the genus Hilara; but its elongated third antennal connection with the minute. Black, the first two antennal joints and the legs dark brown, the knees and haltei-es yellow; upper part of the occiput and sides of the front velvety black, middle of the front below the laestocellus, face, cheeks, and lower part of the occiput gray pruinose; eyes of the male almost as widely separated as the posteriorocelli, third joint of antennae conical, slightly longer than wide, less long than the style, proboscis as long as the height of head, hairs of palpi and underside of head whitish, those of back of head yellowish brown; thorax slightly polished, marked with three indistinct black vittae, almost glabrous, in the middle, behind the suture, with a golden yellow pubescence, no hairs before the halters, scutellum with four bristles and few short hairs; abdomen slightly polished, his hair yellow, hippiegium of male small, almost bare.

Female: Differs from the male as follows: anterior half of the mesonotum opaque, gray frosted, marked with four polished black vittae, the remainder of the thorax, the carapace and the first five segments of the abdomen, densely silvery white frosted, hairs on the belly quite short, at the back. Closely related to Ibnbata and Irregularis, but in these species the lower outer corner of the male prehensiles is rounded and the fourth vein extends to the wing margin in both sexes. Black, the barbells light yellow, hair and bristles black; eyes of male contiguous, third joint of antenna a little more than twice as long as wide, about four times as long as the style, proboscis about as long as the height of the head; body opaque, blue-gray frosted, hairs sparse and rather short, shield with four bristles, hypopygium rather small, ascending obliquely, with several long bristly hairs, brackets elongated conical, filiform, the exposed part about five times as long as the first joint of hind tarsi, the latter much thicker than that of the other tarsi, much narrower than the tibiae, the posterior tibiae of the male bears on the outside a number of rather long bristly hairs, in the female ciliates with almost erect scales, wings hyaline, stigma light yellowish, veins yellowish brown, normal, last part of the fifth vein, more than twice as long as the previous part, the sixth vein reaches the wing edge.
Diffei's from the above description oiglauca only as follows: Mesonotum slightly polished, thin dark gray pruinose, hairs of male hippiegium sparse and rather short, the claspers suboval, near the tip of. DirTERA 417 underside bearing a dense tuft of rather short hairs, filament rather slender, the exposed portion only slightly longer than the first joint of the hind tarsi, hind tibiae of male externally bearing some short hairs, in the female not ciliate with scales, last section of fifth vein sometimes less than twice as long as preceding section. Differs from glauca as follows: Mesonotum marked with four polished vittae that sometimes almost meet; segments three to five of abdomen, and sides of the second, polished, then narrow backs of these segments whitish, hairs on sides of abdomen.
Differs from glauca as follows: Mesonotum slightly polished, thinly olive-gray pruinose and marked with three indistinct black ones. Almost j^cATz^o^a, but in that species the mesonotum is almost opaque, not black vittated; the legs and abdomen are dark brown, and the female's legs are unciliated with scales. Black, the buds of the barbells yellow, the hairs white, many of them on the themasonotum, the ten marginal ones on the scutellum, those on the antennae, palpi, upper part of the occiput, vertex, tibia and tarsi.
Black, halteres and bases of femora yellow, bristles and hairs black; third antennal node four times as long as wide, about five times as long as style, proboscis slightly longer than head height; thorax dark, pruinose gray, mesonotum marked with three black vittii!, scutellum bearing six hairs, abdomen slightly smooth, almost glabrous, legs slender, nearly glabrous, first joint of hind tarsi numerous.
