Four specimens
of a palegray shrew
of thegenus
Crocidura collectedby Dr. W.
L.Abbott
in Baltistan represent a species distinctfrom
those previously described.The animal may be known
asCrocidura pergrisea sp. nov.

8030.Diagnosis.
—
Sizeand
proportions about as in Crocidura attenuata as describedand
figured by Milne-Edwards,* but color a very pale gray, skullsmallerthanintheCbinese animal (greatestlength 18.8-19.0 instead of 21mm.) and crown
areaoffirst unicuspidfullyequaltotbat ofsecond and third combined.Color.

Hairs everywhere blackish-slate from basetowithin about1.5mm.
of tips, thisdarkarea followed by whitewitha faintcreamy
tinge, and this in turn ondorsal surface bythe hair-brown tips.The
general effecton underpartsisacreamy
whitewithirregular slatyclouding, that onupperparts pallidneutral-gray faintlywashed
with hair-brown. Feetand
tail whitish, thetail witha duskyarea on dorsal surface at tip but not includingpencil.Skull
and
teeth.— Viewed
from aboveorbelowtheskull resembles that ofthecommon
CrocidurapullataofKashmir
except that the braincaseisnarrower. Inlateralaspect it is conspicuously lower throughout, and intwoof the three skulls there is a slight but evident concavityin the interorbital region.
Teeth not obviously different fromthoseof C. pullata, thesmall uni- cuspids subequal, with the first inclining to be slightly the larger, the crownareaof thetwo small teeth together not greater than that of the largeanterior unicuspid.

This species differs widelyfrom themembers

tooccur in British India. It appearstobea western representativeofthe groupincludingCrociduraatlenuataMilne-Edwardsand
C. draculaThomas. The
peculiar gray color is a character very unusualamong
shrews.*Teethslightlyworn.
