NEW SHELLS FROM THE NORTHWEST COAST.

following

forms

are

included by name

in

my forthcoming

summary

of

the fauna

of

the Northwest

coast

and

it

becomes

necessary

tovalidate these

names by

descriptions.

Leda

lomaensis,

new

species.

Thisformisclosely related toL.minutaFabricius,

and

Ihavehesitated to give it specific rank, butit differs fromthat species

by

the following characters: the shell is thinner

and more

compressed; the escutcheon is narrower and longer

and

less emphatically impressed; the sculpturerises insharp thinlowlamellae, especiallyontheposterior area, whichcontrast with the thicker, blunter

and more

irregularly distributed ridges of L.

minuta. There are about eight large

and

seven crowded small anterior teeth,anarrowobliqueresilifer

and

abouttwenty, nearlyallwelldeveloped posterior teeth. Length 13.5;height6;diameter4

mm. The

lowincon- spicuousbeakis fivemillimetersbehindthe anterior end. U. S. N.

The

typical L.annulata has the concentric sculpture rather regularly

about14 densely imbricatespiral cords,subequal andequally spaced,withnarrowinterspaces;terminal varix heavy. Aperturesmall,the margincontinuous, the outerlipwithfouror fivelowdenticles internally,thepillarsmooth,the canalclosed,rathershort.

genus.

Type

Megerlia monstruosaScacchi.

In thisgroup the openingforthe pedicel in intactspecimensis wholly intheflatorsessilevalve, as in Platidia;

when

a portionofitappearsto in- volve the other valveit isduetowear. Thesetwogenera are uniquein thisrespectinthe group. P. echinata Fischer

and

Oehlertalsobelongsto thisgenus.

The

speciesare

West

African,Mediterranean

and

Antillean.
