typicalformoccurs ona prairiesix miles southofTacoma,
PierceCounty, Washington. Specimens from Olympia, Thurston County, andSteilacoom, PierceCounty, aretentativelyreferred to this subspecies.Color.

Upperparts (winter pelage) in general, cinnamon-buff or clay color, grizzled with blackish; face blackish; black postauricular area one centimeter square nearly continuous with blackish of sides of face; nose usuallywithwhitespots; whiskers, whiteorgray;underparts ratherpale, ochraceous-buffor light buff,atrifledarkerinsome
examples, lacking the irregularwhite areas observableincertainspecimensof yelmensis.Skull.

Remarks.
— The
pocketgophersoftheisolated prairies ofwesternWash-
ingtonshow
theeffectsof segregation. Broadlyspeaking,onemay
say that those inhabitingeachprairie represent alocalvariant. Whilethecharac- terization ofeachofthesewould beconfusing, the recognitionofthemore
obviousformsisdesirable.Thomomys
douglasii douglasiiisone of these, T. d. yelmensis another, and T. d. tacomensis a third. Specimens fromlocalities between thetype locality ofthe present subspecies
and
that of yelmensis areofsomewhat
intermediatecharacter, and mightbereferred to either subspecies, according to specimensnow
in hand. Their precise allocationmust
await theacquisition ofadditionalmaterial.Specimensexamined.
