GENERAL NOTES.
THE NAMES FOR TWO GENERA OF AFRICAN ARTIODACTYLA.
The
genericname
Koiropotamus Gray, 1843 (List Spec.Mamm.
Brit.Mus.,p. xxvii),isusuallycited as
anomen nudum,
butproveson examination tobea validname. Althoughprintedinoneplaceinthebody
ofthetext as"
Choiropotamiis," itappears inthe "SystematicList" inthe front ofthe
book and
intheindexasKoiropotamusonly,and was
evidentlytakendirect fromthespecificname
koiropotamusofDesmoulins.As C
koiropotamus,inthebody
ofthetext(p.185),ithasbeenacceptedasa validname, buthasbeen consideredaspreoccupiedby
Chaeropotamus,''Cuvier, 1821,"whichname
in realityfirstdates as a technicalname
forafossilpig, notfromCuvier,but from Desmarest,1822(Mammalogie,vol.2,suppl., p. 544). In 1854,when
he proposed the substitutename
Potamochcerus,Gray
cited insynonymy
fromhis 1843work
thename
Koiropotamusonly,and
took ChoiropotamusGray
fromtheAnnalsand Magazine
ofNaturalHistoryforOctober, 1852.ItseemsclearthatChoiropotamusGray,1843,isa lapsusforKoiropotamus inthe
same
work; thatnoerror of transcription, lapsus calami, nor typo- graphicalerrorisevident inthe case ofKoiropotamus, sinceitwas
taken direct from thespecificname
koiropotamus of Desmoulins;and
that the genericname
KoiropotamusGray
isnot invalidatedby
theearlierChaero- potamus ofDesmarest.The
bushpigswouldrightlybe known, then,by
the genericname
Koiropotam,usGray
(typeSus
africanus Schreber, not Gmelin,=»Sus koiropotamus Desmoulins).Another genusofAfrican ungulates thatthrougherror lostthe
name
firstproposedfor it is that currently
known
as Bubalis. Itwas
firstnamed
Alcelaphus
by
BlainvUlein1816(Bull. Soc. Philom.,p. 75), type A.busela- phus. Laternames, allwiththesame
typespecies, are Bubalis Goldfuss, 1820 (Handb.Zool., vol.2,p.367);Damalis HamiltonSmith, 1827 (Griff- ith'sCuvier,vol.4,p.343); AcronotusHamiltonSmith,1827(1.c,p.346);and
BubalusOgilby, 1837 (Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1836, p. 139; not of Smith, 1827).The name
recently usedforthe genus, "Bubalis Lichten- stein, 1814,"isnot avalidgenericname
(seeLyon, Proc.Biol.Soc.Wash-
ington, vol. 27, p. 228, 1914).With
the suppressionof Bubalis Lichten- stein, itfollows that the genericname
forthe hartebeests, insteadofbecom-
ing Bubalis Goldfuss, should revert to the time honored Alcelaphus of Blainville, solonginuse beforeitwas
erroneouslysupplantedby
Bubalis.— N.Hollister.

LOPHOTRICCUS VERSUS COMETORNIS.
In the Bulletinofthe
Museum
ofComparativeZoology,Vol.LXIV,
No.4, 1921, p. 372,
we
stated that the earliest designation of the type of Lophotriccuswas
that ofLophotriccusspicifer (Lafresnaye),by
Sclaterin 1888,and
accordinglywe
substituted LophotriccusforColopteryx, creating the genus Cometornis for Todirostrum sqitamaecrista Lafresnaye. Dr.Charles
W. Richmond
hasjust calledourattentiontoamuch
earliertype fixationby
Sharpe (Zoological Record, Vol.XX,
1884, Aves, p. 34)who
designated Lophotriccus squamicristatus (Lafr.) \
=
Lophotriccus squamae- crista (Lafr.)]. Unfortunatelywe had
overlooked this type designation which, nodoubt, istheearliest. Our
Cometornisisthus apuresynonym
ofLophotriccus,and
Cometornis vitiosusBangs and
PenardbecomesLophotriccusvitiosus (Bangsand
Pen- ard). Also, the bird formerlyknown
as Colopteryx galeatus (Boddaert), forwhichwe had
substituted Lophotriccusgaleatus, should continue tobeknown
as Colopteryx galeatus (Bodd.).— Outram BangsandThomas

A NEW NAME FOR PACHYRAMPHUS POLYCHOPTERUS COSTA- RICENSIS CHUBB.
Inour reviewoftheformsof
Pachyramphus
polychopterus(Bull.M.
C.Z., 1921, 64, p. 391)we
used thename Pachyramphus
polychopterus costa- ricensisChubb
for the form inhabitingPanama and
western Costa Rica.This
name
however,is preoccupiedby
Pachyratnphus versicolorcostaricen- sisBangs
(Proc.N.E.Z.Club,1908,4,p.26).It
was
our intentiontomake
thiscorrectionbeforethe publicationofour paper,butwe
neglectedtodoso.We
thereforenow
proposePachyramphus
polychopterus tantulus,nom.
nov., forthe form ofPanama and
western Costa Rica to replacePachyramphus
polychopterus costaricensisChubb
preoccupied.

TEXTOR TEMMINCK VERSUS ALECTO LESSON.
The
genericname
TextorTemminck
isusuallycitedfrom thisauthor's"Nouveau
Recueil Planches Colorizes," III,livraison 75,January5, 1828, wrapper,andtextep. [1]topi.446,and
its typecommonly
consideredby monotypy
to be Textor alectoTemminck,
sp. nov., which equals Cocco- thraustes albirostris Vieillot.Temminck
had, however, previously used (Nouv. Rec. Planch. Col.,II, livr.54,February 12, 1825, p. [2]totexteof genus OriolusLmn.
[in text]) thisgenericname
for OriolustextorGmelin
{=Oriolus cucullatusMuWer =
Hyphantornis cucullatus Auct.) in the following manner: "Oriolus textor, lb. sp. 22 [Latham, Index Ornith., I, 1790, p. 180], estdu
genre Tisserin (Textor)."As
Oriolus cucullatus Miilleristhe onlyspecies mentionedin thisconnection, it istherebymade
the type
by monotypy
ofthe generic designationTextor, whichmust
there- forebe transferred tothegroupnow
called Hyphantornis.General
Notes.79 The
earliest usablename
for the genus heretoforeknown
as Textor isAledo Lesson (Traits d'Ornith., about

HYPHANTORNIS GRAY BECOMES TEXTOR TEMMINCK.
As we
havealreadyshown
(Proc. Biol. Soc.Washington,XXXIV,
1921, p. 78),theoriginal useofthe genericname
TextorTemminck
(Nouv.Rec.Planch.Col.,II, livr.54,Feb. 12,1825, p. [2]totexte ofgenusOriolusLinn, [intext])
makes
Orioluscucullatus Miilleritstypeby
monotypy,and
it is,therefore, applicable, astheearliestgenericname, tothe groupheretofore
known
asHyphantornis Gray. If thisgroup be recognizedasgenerically distinct from thegenus Ploceus, thespecies composing itshould bear thename
Textor;ifconsideredbutsubgenericallydistinctthename
willnever- theless supplantHyphantornis as the subgeneric designation. The
forms apparentlynow
referable to thisgroupare as follows:Textornigriceps (Layard).
