GENERAL NOTES.

THE NAMES FOR TWO GENERA OF AFRICAN ARTIODACTYLA.

The

generic

name

Koiropotamus Gray, 1843 (List Spec.

Mamm.

Brit.

Mus.,p. xxvii),isusuallycited as

anomen nudum,

butproveson examination tobea validname. Althoughprintedinoneplaceinthe

body

ofthetext as

"

Choiropotamiis," itappears inthe "SystematicList" inthe front ofthe

book and

intheindexasKoiropotamusonly,

and was

evidentlytakendirect fromthespecific

name

koiropotamusofDesmoulins.

As C

koiropotamus,inthe

body

ofthetext(p.185),ithasbeenacceptedasa validname, buthasbeen consideredaspreoccupied

by

Chaeropotamus,''Cuvier, 1821,"which

name

in realityfirstdates as a technical

name

forafossilpig, notfromCuvier,but from Desmarest,1822(Mammalogie,vol.2,suppl., p. 544). In 1854,

when

he proposed the substitute

name

Potamochcerus,

Gray

cited in

synonymy

fromhis 1843

work

the

name

Koiropotamusonly,

and

took Choiropotamus

Gray

fromtheAnnals

and Magazine

ofNaturalHistoryforOctober, 1852.

ItseemsclearthatChoiropotamusGray,1843,isa lapsusforKoiropotamus inthe

same

work; thatnoerror of transcription, lapsus calami, nor typo- graphicalerrorisevident inthe case ofKoiropotamus, sinceit

was

taken direct from thespecific

name

koiropotamus of Desmoulins;

and

that the generic

name

Koiropotamus

Gray

isnot invalidated

by

theearlierChaero- potamus ofDesmarest.

The

bushpigswouldrightlybe known, then,

by

the generic

name

Koiropotam,us

Gray

(type

Sus

africanus Schreber, not Gmelin,=»Sus koiropotamus Desmoulins).

Another genusofAfrican ungulates thatthrougherror lostthe

name

first

proposedfor it is that currently

known

as Bubalis. It

was

first

named

Alcelaphus

by

BlainvUlein1816(Bull. Soc. Philom.,p. 75), type A.busela- phus. Laternames, allwiththe

same

typespecies, are Bubalis Goldfuss, 1820 (Handb.Zool., vol.2,p.367);Damalis HamiltonSmith, 1827 (Griff- ith'sCuvier,vol.4,p.343); AcronotusHamiltonSmith,1827(1.c,p.346);

and

BubalusOgilby, 1837 (Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1836, p. 139; not of Smith, 1827).

The name

recently usedforthe genus, "Bubalis Lichten- stein, 1814,"isnot avalidgeneric

name

(seeLyon, Proc.Biol.Soc.

Wash-

ington, vol. 27, p. 228, 1914).

With

the suppressionof Bubalis Lichten- stein, itfollows that the generic

name

forthe hartebeests, insteadof

becom-

ing Bubalis Goldfuss, should revert to the time honored Alcelaphus of Blainville, solonginuse beforeit

was

erroneouslysupplanted

by

Bubalis.

LOPHOTRICCUS VERSUS COMETORNIS.

In the Bulletinofthe

Museum

ofComparativeZoology,Vol.

LXIV,

No.

4, 1921, p. 372,

we

stated that the earliest designation of the type of Lophotriccus

was

that ofLophotriccusspicifer (Lafresnaye),

by

Sclaterin 1888,

and

accordingly

we

substituted LophotriccusforColopteryx, creating the genus Cometornis for Todirostrum sqitamaecrista Lafresnaye. Dr.

Charles

W. Richmond

hasjust calledourattentiontoa

much

earliertype fixation

by

Sharpe (Zoological Record, Vol.

XX,

1884, Aves, p. 34)

who

designated Lophotriccus squamicristatus (Lafr.) \

=

Lophotriccus squamae- crista (Lafr.)]. Unfortunately

we had

overlooked this type designation which, nodoubt, istheearliest.

Our

Cometornisisthus apure

synonym

ofLophotriccus,

and

Cometornis vitiosus

Bangs and

PenardbecomesLophotriccusvitiosus (Bangs

and

Pen- ard). Also, the bird formerly

known

as Colopteryx galeatus (Boddaert), forwhich

we had

substituted Lophotriccusgaleatus, should continue tobe

known

as Colopteryx galeatus (Bodd.).

A NEW NAME FOR PACHYRAMPHUS POLYCHOPTERUS COSTA- RICENSIS CHUBB.

Inour reviewoftheformsof

Pachyramphus

polychopterus(Bull.

M.

C.Z., 1921, 64, p. 391)

we

used the

name Pachyramphus

polychopterus costa- ricensis

Chubb

for the form inhabiting

Panama and

western Costa Rica.

This

name

however,is preoccupied

by

Pachyratnphus versicolorcostaricen- sis

Bangs

(Proc.N.E.Z.Club,1908,4,p.26).

It

was

our intentionto

make

thiscorrectionbeforethe publicationofour paper,but

we

neglectedtodoso.

We

therefore

now

propose

Pachyramphus

polychopterus tantulus,

nom.

nov., forthe form of

Panama and

western Costa Rica to replace

Pachyramphus

polychopterus costaricensis

Chubb

preoccupied.

TEXTOR TEMMINCK VERSUS ALECTO LESSON.

The

generic

name

Textor

Temminck

isusuallycitedfrom thisauthor's

"Nouveau

Recueil Planches Colorizes," III,livraison 75,January5, 1828, wrapper,andtextep. [1]topi.446,

and

its type

commonly

considered

by monotypy

to be Textor alecto

Temminck,

sp. nov., which equals Cocco- thraustes albirostris Vieillot.

Temminck

had, however, previously used (Nouv. Rec. Planch. Col.,II, livr.54,February 12, 1825, p. [2]totexteof genus Oriolus

Lmn.

[in text]) thisgeneric

name

for Oriolustextor

Gmelin

{=Oriolus cucullatus

MuWer =

Hyphantornis cucullatus Auct.) in the following manner: "Oriolus textor, lb. sp. 22 [Latham, Index Ornith., I, 1790, p. 180], est

du

genre Tisserin (Textor)."

As

Oriolus cucullatus Miilleristhe onlyspecies mentionedin thisconnection, it isthereby

made

the type

by monotypy

ofthe generic designationTextor, which

must

there- forebe transferred tothegroup

now

called Hyphantornis.

(3)

General

Notes.

79 The

earliest usable

name

for the genus heretofore

known

as Textor is

Aledo Lesson (Traits d'Ornith., about

March

1, 1831, p. 433), type

by

monotypy, Textor aledo Temrainck

=

Coccothraustes albirostris Vieillot.

The

forms

now

referable to thisgroup appeartobeas follows:

Aledoalbirostris albirostris (Vieillot).

Aledoalbirostrisnyansae

(Neumann).

Aledoalbirostrisintermedins (Reichenow).

Aledoalbirostris senegalensis (Shelley).

Aledoniger (Smith).

The

changeof generic

name

from Textor toAledo, asabove indicated, necessitatesthechangeofthe family

name

Textoridae toAlectuidae.

HYPHANTORNIS GRAY BECOMES TEXTOR TEMMINCK.

As we

havealready

shown

(Proc. Biol. Soc.Washington,

XXXIV,

1921, p. 78),theoriginal useofthe generic

name

Textor

Temminck

(Nouv.Rec.

Planch.Col.,II, livr.54,Feb. 12,1825, p. [2]totexte ofgenusOriolusLinn, [intext])

makes

Orioluscucullatus Miilleritstype

by

monotypy,

and

it is,

therefore, applicable, astheearliestgenericname, tothe groupheretofore

known

asHyphantornis Gray. If thisgroup be recognizedasgenerically distinct from thegenus Ploceus, thespecies composing itshould bear the

name

Textor;ifconsideredbutsubgenericallydistinctthe

name

willnever- theless supplantHyphantornis as the subgeneric designation.

The

forms apparently

now

referable to thisgroupare as follows:

Textornigriceps (Layard).

Textorcollaris (Vieillot).

Textorcucullatus cucullatus (Miiller).

Textorcucullatus bohndorffi (Reichenow).

Textorcucullatusfemininus (Grant).

Textorcucullatusabyssinicus (Gmelin).

Textorspilonotus (Vigors).

Textorspekii(Heuglin).
