Will you make a national research presentation, or write an abstract or paper or grant as part of research activity during your 12 month fellowship (presentation/paper may be after fellowship). Do you receive formal training in how to educate (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions in total) during your 12 month fellowship? Do you receive formal training in business, leadership, quality and outcomes (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions in total) during your 12 month fellowship.
Are you able to serve additional months over and above the 12 month ACGME fellowship. Will you be doing additional fellowship training time over and above the ACGME required 12 months. Would you be willing to do a second year of fellowship that would provide additional non-clinical or clinical subspecialty training if it would increase the chances of a highly desirable position/lead to a longer clinical or non-clinical career productive.
Would it be more likely that you would pursue a second year if the salary or take-home pay were higher, i.e. if a second year pediatric anesthesia fellowship was required on top of the current 12 month ACGME fellowship, this would result in you not being able to take this fellowship doing. Do you plan to have formal teaching responsibilities (defined as a recurring role >10 times per year in lectures, seminars, classrooms, grand rounds; and/or leadership role, i.e. director, associate director of a fellowship, residency, or other program).
Do you plan to have formal leadership/quality/management responsibilities (defined as committee or leadership membership, or department or hospital position).
Do you receive formal research training (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions total)during the 12 month fellowship?
Are you receiving formal research training (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions in total) during the 12 month fellowship. 2 We are encouraged to pursue research projects on our non-clinical days and are able to select mentors to assist with research planning. 3 Lectures and seminars on statistics, experimental design, how to develop a career in research, quality improvement research project.
4 The University does have research training tracks that are mainly offered to its pediatric and ICU fellows who must complete ~6 months of focused research time. We are not even given the assurance that we can get out of the OR in time to do these basic lectures on Biostats, etc. not to make 5 We have an intensive introduction to clinical research class that 4-5 days a week in our very first month of the academic year.
7 We are expected to complete a research project, but we receive very little training on how to properly conduct research and are expected to 'figure it out' on our own. 11 weekly 'food and research' meetings in which research visitors describe the work done and the possibilities. March 12 AM In addition to the many projects available, we received lectures on research methods and approaches.
Are you participating in clinical or laboratory research during your 12 month fellowship?
8 Clinical research is helping a faculty member with their existing project because I think it's important to have a hand in how it's done. The ability to carry out meaningful research cannot be learned in 12 months of full-time work. 13 I participated in a case report with clinical care follow-up, but not a study per se Feb AM 14 engaged in a clinical research study with an attendance regarding opioid use in patients with epidurals Feb PM 15 chart review for a retrospective case series, create a poster and write it up for submission to a journal.
During your 12 month fellowship, is there a requirement to participate in a research project or protocol?
4 There is a requirement to submit a paper or a poster to a national meeting, and research is encouraged. 11 Yes, there is a requirement to do a small project or participate in a protocol during my fellowship. 12 Jan PM There is a requirement to participate in a research project with the hopeful goal of publication.
15 You have to do some kind of project, but most current colleagues are doing case reports or abstracts. We are asked to do an academic project and present it at MARC or SPA. 23 We have the choice of multiple projects and are given the right amount of time to work on them.
24 There is no formal requirement however there is an expectation to participate in research and educational efforts. 28 quality improvement project by creating a macro for our EMR that describes interventional steps for major emergencies (ie, anaphylaxis, MH).
Will you make a national research presentation, or write an abstract or paper or grant as part of research activity during your 12 month fellowship (presentation/paper can be after fellowship)?
Do you want to make a national research presentation, or write an abstract or paper or grant as part of research activity during your 12-month scholarship (presentation/presentation can be after the scholarship). presentation/presentation may be by community). 10 I am currently working on both a case report publication as well as a bench work project, both of which will potentially be accepted for publication before the end of the fellowship. 15 expect to present at SPA and hope to present at ASA as well as publish in core anesthesia journal Feb. PM.
22 I will present a poster presentation on the use of multimedia tools to enhance learning among anesthesia providers. 25 I have the opportunity to present a summary of the new and upcoming "Pediatric Anesthesia Summary Page" and how it is reflected in the preoperative examination and general ovarian care. Have you received formal training on how to educate yourself during the 12-month fellowship (3 or more months of repeated weekly meetings or 12 or more meetings in total).
Do you receive formal training in how to educate (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions total) during your 12 month fellowship?
Do you receive formal training in business, leadership, quality and results (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions in total) during your 12 month fellowship?
Do you receive formal training in business, leadership, quality and outcomes (3 or more months of recurring weekly sessions, or 12 or more sessions total) during your 12 month fellowship?
Do you have opportunity to serve extra months over and above the 12 month ACGME fellowship?
Will you be doing extra fellowship training time over and above the ACGME required 12 months?
Would you be willing to do a second year of fellowship that would provide additional non-clinical or clinical subspecialty training if it would increase the chances of a highly desirable position/lead to a clinical or non-clinical career more productive. Jan AM 2 If I had an area that was available in the current center and would lead to a very desirable position, I would consider it. 3 If it was something I enjoyed, and definitely if I thought it would make me a more competitive job applicant.
12 I think doing a one-year fellowship is of debatable benefit to a general pediatric anesthesiologist compared to residency training plus a year of on-the-job experience (with a good income). If a subspecialty such as anesthesia for cardiovascular surgery were available, I would be willing to do a second year of fellowship training. 15 I would consider it related to enhanced regional/interventional pain techniques in pediatrics.
If this option did not occur, it would be much more difficult to consider doing a second year scholarship. 10 It would certainly make the additional training more desirable for both the friend and his/her family. Paying off the loan would be a great option- I think most people start to worry about starting the loan repayment and putting it off for another year is not something I would want to do.
The closer the salary is to personal pay, the better the benefit-to-sacrifice ratio, so more training would be a bit more attractive. If the take home pay was such that I could participate in the second year of training and afford to start paying off my school loans, I would be more likely to participate in the second year. 20 additional salary and/or companion work maybe every other week or every 2 weeks. Feb PM 21 A higher income would definitely make the second year much more bearable, especially the one with kids.
It is difficult to support a family on our current salary, especially during your 5th or 6th year of education. 28 My salary in my next year's fellowship is about double what I earn as a "R5." It would be less enticing to spend the next two years doing research if I was still on a resident pay scale. If a second year of pediatric anesthesia fellowship in addition to the current 12-month ACGME fellowship was mandatory, it would cause you not to do this fellowship.
If a second year of pediatric anesthesia fellowship over and above the current 12 month ACGME fellowship were mandatory, would it cause you to not do this fellowship?
What are your career plans?
10 I AM CURRENTLY IN ACADEMIC PRACTICE WHERE APPROXIMATELY 70-80% OF MY PRACTICE IS PEDIATRIC ANESTHESIA AND THE REST IS ADULTS.
What percentage of your practice do you plan as pediatric anesthesia?
Do you plan to practice a pediatric anesthesia subspecialty?
Do you plan to do clinical or laboratory research?
6 The program I am going will provide additional training at the attendance of pay if I am willing to do heart disease. 21 ideal combination of translational research; time and funding dependent: effects of GA on the immature CVS; cerebral blood flow patterns in the brain during CPB in the pediatric population. Do you plan to have formal educational responsibilities (defined as recurring role of >10 times per year in lectures, seminars, classroom, grand rounds; and/or leadership role, i.e. director, co-director of fellowship, residence or other program)? rounds; and/or leadership role, i.e. director, co-director of fellowship, residence or other program).
8 expect to play a role in the education of medical students, nurses and colleagues (anesthesia and non-anesthesia), including presentation and OR education. 13 Presentations in M&M meetings, PBLD and assisting residents with weekly keyword presentations February AM. 21 as stated: plan to continue with academia; and enjoy teaching residents; give lectures etc. and participate in research.
