INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

2 vocabulary also becomes an important aspect in the reading process because without the mastery of vocabulary students have a hard time achieving the purpose of reading. Teachers must be able to help students understand the material by providing the appropriate technique in the teaching and learning process. As teachers choose an interesting technique, students will be enthusiastic and enjoy learning English.

In this technique, students are given the opportunity to collaborate with their friends in a group discussion model to solve a problem. The researcher conducted a preliminary survey on November 12, 2014 in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Purbolinggo in the academic year 2014/2015. Based on the above result, it can be concluded that the students' reading comprehension was still low.

4 the teacher has not yet applied the right technique in the classroom, so the students lack motivation in the learning process. Therefore, the researcher interested to conduct the research titled "Using Student Team Achievement Sharing Technique to Increase the Reading Comprehension Ability of Students in the Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Purbolinggo.".

Problem Identification

From the problems, the researcher would like to find out if the STAD technique could increase the students' reading comprehension.

Problem Limitation

Can the Student Team Achievement Division technique increase the reading comprehension ability of eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Purbolinggo?”.

Objective and Benefit of the Study 1. Objective of the study

  • Concepts of Reading Comprehension

The creative reading involves going beyond the material presented by the author creatively and requires the students to think while reading and to use their imagination.7 In creative. In pronominal questions, the students must answer the questions by writing some ideas from the text as their answer in line with the questions. The assessment depends on the completeness and accuracy of the students' answer in this question.

To measure student comprehension, a teacher can use incomplete information transfer diagrams in a reading assessment. Students read the text and complete the diagram with short notes.16 After students read the passage, they write short notes to complete the diagrams. Students are grouped differently based on ability, gender, and background.18 In other words, STAD is a technique that directs students to solve problems together in each group.

In addition, Slavin states that giving motivation both intrinsically and extrinsically can make the student enthusiastic about learning.21 Therefore, motivation is important to give to the students. In the process of learning to read, team study can help the students to increase the solidarity of each other. It can also increase the confidence of the students to express their opinion.

Through team study, the students will be easier to understand the text, especially in finding the main idea and the information of the text because they are studying with their own friends. Therefore, it will make the students motivated to study hard so that they can be successful in learning. The teacher explains what is going on what they have learned and informs an important thing to motivate the students' curiosity about the concepts they will learn. 25.

Students are given a worksheet that they can use to practice their skills, which they learn to value themselves. 21 f) When the students are learning in a group, the teacher must walk around the class, listen to how the group is working, and praise the group that the work is good. 28. Students score points for their team based on the level at which their quiz score exceeds the starting score.

Give the low-scoring students the opportunity to improve their learning by collaborating with other friends in the new group.32. Based on the above theoretical overview, the researcher formulates the hypothesis that: the use of the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can increase the reading ability of the students in the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Purbolinggo.

Setting

The topics covered in this chapter were setting, research object, action plan, data collection method, data analysis technique and success indicator.

Object of the Study

Action Plan

  • Cycle 1 a. Planning
  • Cycle 2 a. Planning

In this action, the researcher made pre-test, treatment and post-test to the students. In groups, the teacher asked the students to discuss the worksheets containing report text and finish it in answer sheets. 28 9) After the students understood the report text, the teacher gave the posttest quiz to the students.

In the STAD technique, the student's quiz score was aggregated with the score of the other students in each group. During the observation, the researcher and the colleague used an observation sheet to write down important things while the learning process was taking place. From the observation sheet, the researcher and colleague would learn the result of the student's learning activity.

In this step, the researcher and the collaborator analyzed how the effect of the acting was, what needed to be repaired and what was paid attention to in the next acting. The result of the reflection will then be used as a guide to make a new plan in the next cycle. The researcher and the associate reflected all the actions performed and identified the result of the observation in the learning process and compared the pre-test and post-test scores.

Data Collection Method

The test was similar to the pre-test where the students were asked to answer the multiple-choice questions on the report text, but the topic taught in the post-test was different from the pre-test. In this study, the researcher observed the behavior of the students and the activities of the students in the learning process to know how the learning process went. When making the observation, the researcher made the observation sheet with a list of the students' activities.

The researcher used documents taken from the data of the school, such as the total of the students, the teachers and the condition of the school.

Data Analysis Technique

31 Since some students failed cycle 1, this means that the researcher had to carry out cycle 2. In cycle 2, the students passed, so the cycles were stopped because the students had met the minimum mastery criteria. The indicator of success is derived from the process and outcome of the action research.

The students understand the material especially in finding the main idea and the information of the text.

RESULT OF THE RESEARCH 1. Description of Location

  • Description of the Research a. Cycle 1
  • The Result of Students’ Score in Cycle 1 Table 8
  • The Result of Students’ Score in Cycle 2 Table 9
  • Students’ Learning Activities Data in Cycle I and Cycle II
  • Students’ Score in Pre test, Post test I, and Post test II
  • The Comparison of Pre-test and Post-test

In addition, the researcher made observation sheets containing a list of students' names and activities as long as the teacher explained the material. Furthermore, the researcher made the test for the students, which would be used in the pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was made to know the students' reading comprehension ability before treatment.

A post-test was administered to determine how students' reading comprehension was after treatment. The teacher asked the students to read the text and find the information in the text. It is intended to learn about the students' abilities in reading comprehension before and after the examination.

From the result of pre-test and post-test we knew that there was an increase from the students' result score. The students' learning activities data were obtained from the entire students' learning activities on observation sheet. In cycle I, the English learning process was not successful and the students' average score was low.

52 Based on the results of pre-test, post-test I and post-test II, it was known that there had been a positive significant increase in the number of students. Based on the above explanation, it could be deduced that the use of the STAD technique could increase the reading comprehension of the students. 53 Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the STAD technique could improve students' reading comprehension.

It was supported by the students' increasing score from pre-test to post-test I, and from post-test I to post-test II. Based on the pre-test and post-test result, it could be seen that the STAD technique could significantly improve the reading comprehension of the students based on the average of the students before and after the treatment. More and more students scored from pre-test to post-test cycle I, and from post-test cycle I to post-test cycle II.

Pupils' reading comprehension was increased by using STAD technology in the eleventh grades of SMAN 1 Purbolinggo. From the class observation, the students will be more active after the teacher has given motivation to the students.
