As a teacher, storyteller, author, actor, neighbor and father, I try to make children laugh to get their attention. I try to make them laugh because that's the best way I know to connect with people many years younger than me.

PREPARE YOUR AUDIENCE

When I visit a school or sponsor a tour of the library, I will sometimes set the mood by mixing up the ages of the students. They will quickly set me straight and once again the mood is set for stupidity.

BE EXPRESSIVE

FIND YOUR VOICE

Read the narrative in your own voice—enthusiastically, of course—and choose a character or two to highlight unique, humorous, contrasting voices. Read the lines for the other characters and the narration in your normal or near-normal voice.

CREATE YOUR OWN MATERIAL

The sight of me holding my nose up in the air gave a visual indication that the caterpillar was a snob. The adults in the audience laughed at him, so I kept him in the story.

PACE YOURSELF

AVOID INAPPROPRIATE HUMOR

I've built the following storytime curriculum around four humorous themes: Bad Hair Day, Crazy Critters: Animals That Don't Want to Behaved Like Animals, Picky Eaters, and With a Oink-Oink Here and Oink-Oink There: Piglet Stories.

BAD HAIR DAY Program at a Glance

There Was an Old Man with a Beard" and "There Was an Old Man in a Tree" by Edward Lear. Cut out a large beard-shaped piece of felt for "There Was an Old Man with a Beard".

CRAZY CRITTERS: ANIMALS THAT DON’T WANT TO BEHAVE LIKE ANIMALS

You're just pretending your legs are made of rubber." The illustration of the bear jumping out of the hat in a restaurant and "TA-DA!" is precious. There are several variations of the use of animal sounds to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus." Here's a version that, while located at the zoo, can use animals from all habitats.

PICKY EATERS Program at a Glance

She swallowed the yak to catch all the rest From the galloping horse to that buzzing fly plague. She swallowed the yak to catch all the rest From the galloping horse to the buzzing fly plague.

WITH AN OINK-OINK HERE AND AN OINK-OINK THERE: PIGGY STORIES

There are many opportunities for the audience to create sound effects as the cows "moo" the pig away and the sheep "baa". She pretends to put a spell on him, making him itch all over - "On his nose and in his hair/Even in his underwear." The pig's family makes funny remarks during the little pig's story.

TRADITIONAL STORY PROGRAM FORMAT

Librarians must develop a variety of strategies when dealing with humorous programs for children older than preschool and elementary age. This section will show how to create story programs for older students using the traditional story program format, special events, and themed parties.

SCHOOL DAZE Lesson Plan at a Glance

Tommy tells his mother he doesn't want to go to school because "nobody likes me there" and "the kids aren't nice there". The punchline reveals that Tommy is the principal of the school. This recording features other humorous school songs, such as "I've Got a Teacher, She's So Mean." The recording can be purchased on the Polisar website: www.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Taily-Po” and “The Viper,” as well as various monster knock knock jokes, riddles and tongue twisters. The dog replied, "Lynchee kinchy colly molly dingo dingo." The children in the audience find it hysterical.

THEME PARTIES

These are Oreo cookies with bits of bologna instead of the white stuff in the middle. In the Wayside books, the children somehow spell synonyms of the words they have to spell.

STORYTELLING AND WRITING PROGRAMS

Show the students a few high-history books from the library and introduce them to some lesser-known high-history figures. Ask students and their teachers to develop more original tall tale characters and submit them to the library.

READING PROGRAM Comedy Club

The many picture books, easy readings, folk lore, and even poetry collections listed in this book are good resources for adapting to readers' theatrical performances. Other powerful resources for developing a reader's theater script are Reader's Theater for Young Adults (1989) and Reader's Theater for Children: Scripts and Development (1990), by Kathy Howard Latrobe and Mildred Knight Laughlin, both published by Teacher Ideas Press. I had pickled peppers to worry about. We had Horner in the corner trying to do Little Boy Blue crotches.

WEB: What do you know about the hook of an illegally harvested perfect purple almost pickled pepper.

TOUR SCRIPT

Hold up a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records and inform your listeners that the longest overdue library book was 288 years old. Show off a craft you made from one of the craft books or a science experiment to promote science books. Never include a detailed explanation of the Dewey decimal system or other library lessons in your speech unless requested by the teacher.

End the tour with one of the library raps or endings from chapter 7 of this book.

SCHOOL VISITS

Surprise them by pointing out an ordinary object in the library: "Ladies and gentlemen, a library wastebasket!". And she was very, very happy for a long, long time Inside the biggest, juiciest apple in the whole orchard. The kids receive a copy of "The Messed-Up Rap" and listen to the rap performed.

Not Li-berry, Don't say Li-barey, It's not Li-berry, It's Library.

PICTURE BOOKS

Seuss introduces us to Gertrude McFuzz, a bird with a short, plain tail; and "The Big Brag,". A funnier version (but long out of print) is Marcia Sewall's The Wee, Wee Mannie and the Big, Big Coo: A Scottish Folk Tale (Little, Brown, 1977). New versions include "The Wolf Who Cried 'Boy'" and "The City Moose and the Country Moose.".

Stories include The Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, Jill and the Beanstalk, and The Prince and the Pea.

EASY READERS

Junior never stopped eating." The crocodile soon becomes too big for the nest and the Birds encourage it to fly away. The fish immediately outgrows the goldfish bowl, then the vase, various pots, the bathtub, the flooded basement and the city swimming pool. He uses it to shoot the apples that have already fallen to the ground at the pears in the pear tree.

The funniest bits include the red balloon baby who turns into a string baby, and the kid with the ant farm talking about "responsibility". Ants are seen free throughout the rest of the story.

JUVENILE FICTION CHAPTER BOOKS

Create reader's theater scripts out of the wicked trick chapters, such as "The Glass Eye," "The Frog," "The Wormy Spaghetti" and "Mrs. She helps parents around town with various cures for typical childhood problems, such as "Won't-Fetch-Toys- the Cure", the "Never-Want-to-Go-To-Beds-Cure" and the "Slow-Eating-Small-Bite-Taking- Cure.” Read aloud "The Radish Cure," where Patsy refuses to take a bath. The opening line will grab the kids and not let them go: "The Herdmans were absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world." This tough bunch decides to attend the church's annual Christmas competition.

The average ninth child in the family is thrown into the forest by older siblings.

POETRY COLLECTIONS

Moses, who has seventeen noses, is highlighted by the song "The Barber", in which the customer's ears are clipped, and the customer looks up at the barber's cry and says, "What?". Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” and “Give Me a Break,” set to “Home on the Range,” is a complaint about being late for a library book. This famous collection of original songs contains "Willoughby Wallaby Woo" and a song I call the world's hardest trick.

This collection of nonsense verse includes titles such as “Yet Another Poem to Send to Your Enemy,” If You're Traveling in Transylvania,” and.

ANTHOLOGIES AND FOLKLORE COLLECTIONS

Among the several humor and non-humor stories are the hilarious "Why Armadillos Are Funny," adapted by Barbara McBride-Smith, and "The Barking Mouse," adapted by Antonio Sacre. Highlights of the first volume include the classic "Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby" and "Brer Rabbit and the Mosquitoes," a visual comedy for storytellers. Piggle-Wiggle, Wayside School, Ramona Quimby and more folk tales such as "Lazy Jack" and "Clever Elsie". Companion book: Stories to Tell a 6-Year-Old (Little, Brown, 1997).

This massive volume features selections from some of the funniest children's chapter books, such as Beverly Cleary's Beezus and Ramona, Robert Newton Peck's The Soup, and Barbara Robinson's Best Christmas Pageant.
