STAFF MEETING

The regular monthly staff meeting will be on Tuesday, February 8th at 9:30 am. in the Ancon Conference Room. Prompt attendance will be greatly appreciated.

SEMI NAR NEWS

Please check your bulletin boards for information pertaining to the luncheon seminar on Tuesday, February 8th.

On Thursday, Februa ry 10th at 12 noon in the Naos Conference Room, RICHARD EMLET, STRI Educa tional Outreach Fellow from the University of Washington, will be giving a seminar on:

Hydromechanics of form in some invertebrate larvae

ARRIVALS

We lcome back to the DRESSLERS who arrived this past week. Dr. Dressler had been on sabbatical at the University of Florida.

Expected to arrive February 7 is LEO BUSS, Yale University, for a brief visit and to give two seminars.

February 11 - Arriving, ROSS KIESTER, Tulane University, to continue studies on the life history and demography of Thysanoptera. He will be on BCI until February 21.

RESEARCH REPORT FORMS

Scientific staff, associates, visiting scientists and students are reminded to fill out a ItResearch Project Formtl for on-going or anticipated projects at STRI, and to send these before February 14th to the Office of the Director. These forms will be compiled in a book tha t is presented each year to Panama's Minister of Health to maintain that Ministry informed of research activities at STRI. (A contract between STRI and the Ministry of Health legalizes STRI scientific operations in the Republic of Panama.)

NOTES OF INTEREST

-The Smithsonian Institution has introduced legislation for consideration by the U.S.

Congress that would abolish the separate spending limit of $750,000 for the administrative and maintenance expenses of Barro Colorado Island. Adoption of this legislation is a prerequisite for the construction of any new dormitory or dining- room facilities on the island.

-DAVIS CARLSON, a senior majoring in biology at Southern Mississippi College, is willing to work on a volunteer basis for a researcher at STRl. He wi 11 be in Panama through May 1983, and has past experience working with marine invertebrates and freshwater fish, but is willing to work in other kinds of projects. He has scuba certification, and can be reached at 252-6334.

-For those who need to translate zoological terms, you can consult the MINI ATLAS JOVER, (COLECCION DE DIVULGACION CIENTIFICA) 12 volumes, that ,are in ELENA LOMBARDO's office.

UPCOMING HOLIDAYS

Carnaval celebrations in Panama will begin on Saturday, February 12, and Tuesday, February 15 (Carnaval Day) is an official holiday. STRI will observe a liberal leave policy for its employees on that day.
