Clinical Laboratory Science

PULM–F 456 Respiratory Care Practicum III (6 cr.) This course allows students to apply advanced patient assessment techniques, information gathering skills, and communication and leadership skills in neonatal care. PULM-F 485 Respiratory Care Practicum IV (6 cr.) Students will treat patients in critical care settings with an emphasis on cardiopulmonary assessment and monitoring.

License Requirements to Practice There is no state license in Indiana; however, some states require licensure in addition to or instead of national certification.

Cytotechnology

Bachelor of Science in Cytotechnology at Indiana University-Purdue University

Structure of the program The prerequisites can be taken on a part-time basis; the professional program is only offered in a full-time day format. Admission to the professional program is competitive; therefore, completion of the prerequisites does not guarantee admission to the program. Courses in the professional program are consecutive and must be taken in the order specified by the program faculty.

Associate of Science

The Cytotechnology program recognizes superior academic and professional conduct with the Liang-Che Tao Outstanding Student Award, which is presented to a graduating senior. Graduation Requirements Satisfactory completion of 127 credit hours, to include 90 credit hours of prerequisite and general education courses and 37 credit hours of professional courses. All coursework must be completed in accordance with the academic and professional policies of the program and school.

Associate of Science in Paramedic Science at Indiana University-Purdue University

Duration of the program Two years; one year (24-26 credit hours) of prerequisite work plus 12 months of professional coursework (42 credit hours). General Information Students accepted into the program must complete the school's and the program's admission requirements before the first day of classes. Additional information regarding health insurance coverage options and all immunizations required prior to starting the program are also included.

Emergency Medical Services

Awards Based on academic performance or clinical performance and excellence, the program faculty will recommend students for degrees awarded with honors in accordance with the school's honors criteria. Graduation Requirements Satisfactory completion of all prerequisites (24-26 credit hours) and 41 credit hours of professional coursework. All professional courses (EMER-E courses) must be completed within 24 months of starting the professional program.

Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT-B)

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic at Indiana University-Purdue University

EMT basics determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and establish priority for emergency care needed. Based on assessment results, EMT-basic provides emergency medical care to medical and trauma patients. EMT-basic provides simple rescue service if an ambulance has not been accompanied by a specialized unit.

Histotechnology

The Indiana EMT Basic Exam is the written and proficiency exam of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. After receiving the call from the dispatcher, the EMT-basic drives the ambulance to the address or location given, using the fastest route, depending on traffic and weather conditions. The EMT-basic provides assistance to receiving facility personnel upon request and ensures that ambulances are kept in optimal condition.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of all standard academic requirements established for this program, the candidate is eligible to receive a Certificate in Histotechnology from Indiana University. By virtue of the standards required by this program, the candidate is eligible to take the Histotechnician Certification Examination administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology's Board of Registry. Scholarships The American Society for Clinical Pathology, the National Society for Histotechnology, and several state professional histology organizations sponsor scholarships for students in histotechnology.

Certificate in Histotechnology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

To provide the rural healthcare community with individuals competent to perform high quality histological procedures. Perform entry-level procedures of basic histology laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and troubleshooting. Demonstrate knowledge of the operating principles of commonly used laboratory instruments, including the ability to perform daily preventive maintenance and correct simple malfunctions.

Associate of Science in Histotechnology at Indiana University-Purdue University

Professional Curriculum Design Prior to obtaining an associate degree, a certificate-level course (24 credit hours) must be completed. Alternatively, a previously certified HT(ASCP) may apply for special credit in lieu of completing a certificate course. Prerequisites Completion of a certificate in histotechnology or previous American Society of Clinical Pathology certification as a histotechnician (HT) or histotechnologist (HTL).

Medical Imaging Technology

Radiography This field is complete for applicants who have earned 40 credits in radiography. Suggested Elective Course (if required) The number of elective hours will vary for each student to complete a total of 80 credits of required course work. Additional electives may be required before or during the professional program to complete a minimum of 122 credit hours of academic work for graduation.

Nuclear Medicine Technology

Also, students with outstanding academic and clinical achievements during their professional program may be recognized by the program at the time of graduation.

Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology at Indiana University-Purdue

Program Facilities The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program is offered in Indianapolis at the Indiana University Medical Center. Accreditation The bachelor's program in nuclear medicine technology is fully accredited by the Joint Review. Radiation Therapy

Awards The Faculty will recommend to the University to graduate students with superior academic performance for degrees awarded with distinction in accordance with University policy.

The program offices, classrooms and laboratory facilities are located on the first floor of the Clinical Building. Students with outstanding academic and clinical performance during the professional program may be recognized by the program at the time of graduation. All coursework must be completed in accordance with the academic and professional policies of the program and health professional programs.

Respiratory Therapy

Awards The faculty will recommend students with superior academic performance to the University for degrees awarded with distinction according to Indiana University policy.

Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy at Indiana University-Purdue University

Students may be eligible to apply for a limited student permit as a respiratory care practitioner upon successful completion of the first year of professional coursework. Specific Requirements In addition to the School of Medicine Health Professions Programs admissions policies and procedures found at the beginning of this section of the bulletin, the admissions policies below apply to the respiratory therapy baccalaureate degree program. Technical Standards All accepted students will be required to sign a statement certifying that they can meet the program's technical standards.

Academic Requirements

A student may be dismissed from the program if a grade of C- or lower is recorded for any professional course. A student will be dismissed from the program if probation status continues for two consecutive semesters. A student will be dismissed from the program if he does not complete the bachelor's degree within three years of initial admission to the professional program.

Advanced Standing

Graduation Requirements Satisfactory completion of 125 credit hours to include 55 credit hours of prerequisite course work and 70 credit hours of professional.

Professional Program Requirements

Pass/Fail* School of Medicine Health Professions programs students may not use the Pass/Fail option for a stated prerequisite or a professional course. Students may obtain a copy of the available program-specific Special Credit Policy and Procedure by contacting the Administrative Office for Health Professions Programs in Van Nuys Medical Science. Each health profession degree is a separate academic curriculum, and students may not pursue a double major.

Academic Policies

Special Credit Policy* The School of Medicine's Health Professions Programs may award special credit to students who are enrolled at Indiana University seeking a degree and who have, by education or previous experience, experience in a profession health represented in the Health Professions Programs. Students who do not re-enroll as specified in the continuation agreement are subject to dismissal from the school and program. Other Withdrawals A student who withdraws without arranging a continuation agreement in writing with the program director, or who fails to enroll in any semester, will not be permitted further enrollment in the School and will be considered to have made no progress. satisfactorily towards a degree.

Honors

In addition, a student who does not meet program-specific academic requirements will be considered to have made insufficient academic progress toward a degree and may be dismissed. During the course orientation, each student receives a copy of the course-specific study requirements. These students may be eligible for advanced standing in the program, provided the work completed meets current program standards.

IUPUI Honors

Professional Standards A student who does not meet the standards of professional and personal behavior may be recommended for expulsion. Upon departure, the student is obliged to conclude a written continuation agreement with the head of the individual program. The student must meet any specific academic/clinical requirements associated with re-enrollment under the Continuation Agreement.

Student Rights & Responsibilities

Appeals The school adheres to the appeals procedures discussed in the Indiana University Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct. The student may inspect the record upon request and may request deletion or correction of the record at a hearing described in detail in the Indiana University Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct. Orientation Students are required to complete program-based orientation programs prior to the start of professional courses.

Credentials/Licensure

Students are responsible for attending these sessions and for knowing the program-specific policies and standards that are distributed and discussed at the sessions. Professional behavior Students are responsible for behavior appropriate to their professional training and education. Students are responsible for communicating any necessary record changes with the Health Professions Programs Administrative Office in the Van Nuys Medical Science Building as soon as possible.

Faculty

Upon request, students may be required to purchase and present proof of general liability insurance before being certified to begin the clinical experience. Students transferring directly into the professional program from outside the Indiana University system may also choose to participate in the campus orientation program.
