PURDUE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE DEGREES

In any department, the final exam can be waived if the student meets the minimum requirements of the departments of the school. The committee must certify to the Postgraduate School either that the student has passed the required examinations of the department in which his main degree studies were taken or that the committee is satisfied with the performance of the student based on a committee conference.

Academic Regulations

The formal study plan must be submitted as soon as possible and before the final semester. Oral and written examinations - The Graduate School has no general requirement for oral and written examinations for the master's degree.

Grades

A student may withdraw from classes during the third quarter of a semester or session if he receives the approval of his advisor and the instructor of the course; the instructor of the appropriate course will assign a grade of "w" or "WF", which will reflect the student's progress up to the date of withdrawal. Removal of Incomplete: Removal of a grade of incomplete is the student's responsibility.

Courses Repeated

W or WF Withdrawal or Withdrawal, by Default: A student may officially withdraw from classes during the first half of a semester or session without penalty if he receives approval from his advisor; a degree of. A student may withdraw from classes during the last quarter of a semester or session if he receives the approval of his advisor, the instructor of the course, and his dean; the instructor of the appropriate course will assign a grade of "w" or "WF", which will reflect the student's progress up to the date of withdrawal.

Course Audits

Incomplete: The grade I (Incomplete) indicates that the work at the end of the semester is satisfactory but not completed. An incomplete grade that has not been removed by the end of one year will be converted to the grade F by the Registrar's Office.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY

BACHELOR OF ARTS

Granted by Indiana University)

AREA I: See School of Science requirements on page 18

The curriculum for the Department of Biology is being revised, and some of the above-mentioned courses may be withdrawn and replaced by new courses. Acceptable in the case of transfer from another department or institution where these courses are normal to that curriculum (ie, Agriculture-Purdue).

Courses In Biology

Continuation of K101 which examines chemical regulation in plants and animals, biometrics, principles of genetics, and the growth and development of living organisms. Continuation of concepts of biology, investigation of behavior of living organisms, principles of chemical mechanisms in biological systems, and applications of biology. Selected principles of biology will emphasize issues and problems that extend into everyday affairs of the student.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

BACHELOR OF "SCIENCE

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE - MAJOR IN CHEMISTRY

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (Granted by Purdue University)

MASTER OF SCIENCE

Anyone who does not meet these requirements should take the Aptitude Test section of the Graduate Record Examination or seek immediate counseling. The general requirements include admission to ordinary graduate status, completion of the English requirement and satisfactory completion of an approved study plan. Departmental placement tests in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry are given each fall to incoming regular graduate students to determine deficiencies that must be removed before completion of the graduate program.

COURSES IN CHEMISTRY

An introduction to the main methods of chemical analysis and separation for the chemical technician or non-chemist. An introduction to the principles of inorganic chemistry with an emphasis on the chemistry of non-transitional elements. An introduction to the principles of inorganic chemistry with an emphasis on the chemistry of non-transitional elements.

GEOLOGY

First year in a foreign language does not apply to fulfill this requirement, but is an elective. FIELD mc: Physical and Biological Sciences: See School of Sciences requirements, but at least two of the four courses must contain chemistry Cl0l-Cl02 or Cl0S-Cl06, and at least one of the four courses must be in biological sciences. See School of Science general requirements, except for electives to make a minimum of 124 credits and an average of C or better for education courses (with at least a C in M449).

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Undergraduate Programs

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (MATHEMATICS)

In order for a student to acquire some depth of study in a subject outside his major, he must have a minor in the natural sciences, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, or the humanities. While a minor is usually in one department, it may be from two or more, if the student's advisor approves. Courses can be used for the dual purpose of meeting general requirements and the minor requirements of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

AREA IV: PURE MATHEMATICS OPTION

AREA IV: APPLIED MATHEMATICS OPTION

At least three additional computer science courses at the 400 level or higher, at least one of which is a 500-level course.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

A student who wishes to pursue a graduate degree in the Department of Mathematical Sciences must see a graduate advisor to receive advising, prepare an informal plan of study, and obtain a regular graduate student application form. The student's formal plan of study must be submitted to and accepted by the Graduate School prior to the semester in which the student expects to graduate. No course in which a grade of less than C is earned, and normally no more than six hours of courses with a grade of C, may be taken to complete the degree plan.
