- Conceptual Framework
Then, phonology relates to the mental or abstract aspect of sounds in language rather than the actual physical articulation of speech sounds. Articulators are the parts of the oral tract used in the production of speech sounds. These sounds are formed with the front of the tongue on the alveolar ridge, which is the rough, bony ridge just behind the upper teeth.
There are two other sounds that are produced without the active use of the tongue and other parts of the mouth. These sounds are produced by blowing air out of the mouth from both but the tongue. The position of the tongue or the general area of the mouth in which vowels are made.
Diphthongs are the configuration of mouth changes in the flow of articulations (Jackson in Ampa, 2014;43). In anticipating vowels, the tongue is held at such a distance from the roof of the mouth that there is no anticipatory noise.
