AN IMPORTANT NEW SPECIES OF OYSTER FROM NORTH BORNEO SUITABLE FOR INTRO-
DUCTION IN THE PHILIPPINES
By PAUL BARTSCH
Curator of Molhisks andCcnosoic Invertebrates
U
. S. NationalMuseum (With Two
Plates)During
the cruise oftheUnited
StatesBureau
of Fisheries steamer Albatrosson
its Philippine expedition,we made
a stop at Sandakan.British
North
Borneo.Here on
the shore ofthe bay I found, among
otherthings, shellheapsofa magnificentoyster thatforcibly
reminded
me
ofour splendidOstrcavirginica oftheeastAmerican
shores. This findingwas
quitea surprise sincethemany
collections ofoystersmade
in the field
and
markets of the Philippineshad
always been of the dark, mangrove-attaching forms only, which
are usually smalland
of inferior quality as
compared
with the present form.Now
that the world appears to have finished its destructive cycleand
isagain turningtopeaceful pursuits, I feelthatthisspecies should be brought to the notice of the shellfish industries, for it merits the careful attentionnow
accorded to the Virginia oyster. I believe that there aremany
places in the Philippines suitable for its introduction.OSTREA BENEFICA, new
species (Plate i)Shell large, oval, incquivalved;exterior soiledwhite;interiorporce- laneous, white with the lateral

The
left valve has a long heavy hinge with a slightly depressednarrow
sublateral groove,and

The margin
of the valve
shows mere
lines of growth, without indications of pits.In the right valve the hinge is
much
shorter. Both valvesshow

M.
Smith, while Fisheries Adviser in Siam, sent us six-specimens collected at
Koh
Prap, U. S. X.M.
No. 361064, and two, U. S. X.M.
Xo. 361067,from Bandon
Bight, Siam. which appearto belong to this species. This species recalls Ostrea gigas
Thunberg
of Japan and northern China, but that is amuch more
elongate formand
has a concentric lamellose exterior as well as dark coloration in theyoung
stages.SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTIONS VOL. 104, NO. 16, PL. 1
