Eyes.
—
In P. micropsthe eyes are very small, thecornea beingverymuch
shorter than the breadth of the basal joint of the antennular peduncle. Inalltheotherspeciestheeyeislarge,thecorneaconsidera- bly broader than the basal joint of the antennular peduncle.There seem
to beno
tangible differencesbetween
the sizes of the eye in P. glaher, P. sansoi,and
P. macrops.The
Atlantic specimens are large-eyed.Antenna!
scale.—
In P. micropsand
P. sancoi the antennal scale extends foronly one-third of its lengthbeyond
the distalend
of the peduncle of the antennule. In the other described species the scale extends forone-half ofits lengthbeyond
thedistalendof theantennu-lar peduncle.
The
Atlantic specimens belong to the first group.Rostralplate.
—
In all the species the rostral plate is tridentate with the exception of P. macrops, inwhich
themedian
tooth is wanting.In P. glaher the rostral plate is semicircular, with the lateral teeth rather far back on the lateral margin. In P. sansoi it is large, with the lateral
margins
paralleland
thewhole
plate rectangular in form.In P. microps it is large with the lateral margins incurving slightly posteriorly.
The
Atlantic specimens have the rostral platemore
like that of P. glaher than the othertwo
species, but the lateral teeth aremore
nearlyonalevelwiththemedian
tooth,sothatthelateralmargins are longer than in P. glaher.Telsoii.—In this genus the telson is
armed
distally withtwo
pairs of large spines, betweenwhich
is agroup
of smaller spines in a graded series.Between
the distal pair of large spines, at theapex
of the telson, is a platearmed
with five or six teeth,between which
are long feathered setae.Proximal

this species belongs S. occidentalis is distinguished by having both the thirdand
fourth pleopods of themale
furnished with modified setae.Only
one other species, 5". anoutalaHansen,
has both thirdand
fourth pleopods of themale modifiedinthisway. vS*.anomala,however,has thepseudo- branchial rami of the secondtothe fourth pleopodsof the malenearly straightand
not spirallytwisted as in S. occidentalis.Otherwise 5*. occidentalis is very closely allied to the other species within its group, especially to ^. inornata
Hansen, and
can only be certainly determinedfrom
an examination of adult male specimens.The
species is apparently a veryabundant
one in the inshore waters of the islands of theWest

females of this species are very closely similar tothose of
most
species of the genus, differingonly inminor
characters.The
males,on
the other hand, are clearly distinguishedby
the struc- ture of the pleopods, especially those of the secondand
third pairs.I
know
of no other species inwhich
theexopod
of the third pair ofmale
pleopods is modified in thesame way
as in this species,and
theform
of this pleopod at once distinguishes G. johnsonifrom
all other species of the genus.The
second pair ofmale
pleopods are alsomuch more
robust thaninany
other species. G.johnsoniismuch
the
most
remarkablespeciesin thecollection,and
Ihavemuch
pleasure in associating it with thename
of the leader of the expedition. It is a veryabundant
species in the coastal waters of the Virgin Islandsand
Puerto Rico,where
severalhundred
specimenswere

species is distinguishedfrom
the other described formsby
the combination of the characters of the eye, antennal scale,and

latter resembles very closely thetels'on of Gibhcrythrops acanthura (IHig), but the eye

antennal scale arevery differentfrom
those of this species. Inspite of theim- perfect condition of the only specimen,I think that the species should be easyto recognizefrom

and
eyes, the antennularand
antennal appendages completely uncovered, frontmargin
broadlyand
evenly arcuate, anterolateral corners rounded.Eyes
(textfig.9a) relativelylargeand on enormous
stalks;in lateral view the cornea is largeand
globular, without papillae,pigment
red- dish brown.Antennal
scale (textfig.9a) extending for one-quarter of itslengthbeyond
the antennular peduncle, rather narrow, six times as long as broad; terminal lobe extendingsome
distancebeyond
the spine of the outer margin, twice as long as broad, with a distal jointmarked
off
by
a suture.Telson (text fig. 9^) narrowly triangular in shape,

exact generic position of this specimen issome- what
doubtfuland must
remain so untilmore
completeand adultmale specimens are available. It differsfrom
the only other described species of the genus,M.
oculata Tattersall (1911), in the practical absence of a rostral plate, in the largeand
peculiarform
of the eyes,Fig.10.

the otherhand
there isno
other genus towhich
it can be referred.Although
the spines on the telson are broken, I think it is clear that the generalform and
armature of the telson are perhaps nearer to this genus than toany
other. I refer it provisionally toMetamblyops, and
rely on thecombination of characters of the carapace, eyes,antennal scale,and
telson for its specific recognition.l8
