The
above description is based ontwo
specimens, both ofwhich were
immature.Parona and
Perugia (1895) described a monogenetic trematode, Placunellavallei,collected in 1894by
A. Vallefrom
Naucrates ductor at Trieste,which may
be thesame
species as that described here as Ancyrocotyle bartschi. Their description of P. valleiwas
incompleteand
except for the relative sizeand
distribution of the large hooks of the posterior haptormight
apply equally well to anumber
of species of the related genus Benedenia. LaterParona and
Monticelli (1903) redescribed P. valleiand made
it the type cf the genus Ancyrocotyle; the redescriptionwas
based apparentlyon
the original specimens. Parts of theirdescription checkwellwith that ofA.
bart- schi, but in other respects there are notable differences. In the redescription onlytwo
pairs of hooks are reported, but in their dis- cussion itwas
stated that theywere
unable to find the others, sug- gesting that they might havebecome
lost.They
also describedand showed
in their illustrations only a single, preovarial testis; however, as the specimenswere
oldand
not ingood
condition, it is conceivable that an errorwas made
in interpreting the various structures.The
presence of a single preovarial testis,assuming
thatno
mistakewas made,
distinguishes A. bartschifrom
A. vallei.There
is a difference also in themorphology
of the hooks of the second pair, butmore
material is required before it can definitely be stated that this dif- ference is valid.

This small delicate species
was
found on thegills of aboutone-third of the specimens of Atherinaareaexamined
;theywere
not abundant, onlytwo
or three individualsbeing found on each infested fish.Ancyroceplialits atherinae
may
be easily distinguishedfrom
allother speciesof thegenus
by
theunequallength of the marginal hook-lets of the posterior haptor; these booklets in the other species are approximately equal inlength.
