Avatar.” It is our hope that this issue of Southern Seminary Magazine will encourage the faithful to this goal for the glory of God. Success in the eyes of God is different from success in the eyes of the world.

Eden, “Avatar”

So it's not surprising that a move like Cameron's would present it and you have people yearning for it. It's all there, it has its own apocalypse and it has its own religion. Moore said it's so strange that you have to create this kind of black-and-light shopping paradise when the world we're in is the most beautiful thing on earth.

While James Cameron's profit-hungry, high-tech Dragon Assault Ship snapped pictures of Judeo-Christian theism, the military, capitalism, and environmental health, the Na'vi, in the form of the low-budget films "The Blind Side" (which honored God) and 'The Hurt Locker' (which honored soldiers), emerged victorious. It seems that plausibility still has the power to take down high-gloss silliness, as in "Avatar's" Eywaism, with its. As for "The Blind Side," with Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock, it cost $30 million to make, compared to "Avatar"'s $500 million.

Attack of the Hollywood

Sure, big studios with big budgets can make good stuff, and low-budget films can be lame or disastrous, but mentally-toxic blockbusters are.

Sky People”

But the big studios are more likely to come up with such godless (and Oscar-winning) fare as "Million Dollar Baby." pushing assisted suicide), "American Beauty" (indulging the perversities of the midlife crisis), "Platoon" (slandering the military) and "Cider House Rules". The product of Metanoia Films (Greek for "repentance"), a company dedicated to presenting "the good, the true and the beautiful," "Bella" told the story of a chef who came to the rescue of a single, pregnant waitress who was fired for lack of work. As her perspective turned to preserving life, strains of the Fanny Crosby hymn, "I am Thine, O Lord," appeared on the soundtrack.

Apocalyptic themes

In "The Book of Eli", the hero fights in a post-apocalyptic world to save the future of humanity by preserving the last copy of the Bible. 2012" is an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it science fiction disaster movie created by nature, ending with an Ark scene where a remnant of humanity is saved. Louis Leterrier's "Clash of the Titans" puts Perseus (born a Greek god but raised a man) against the gods to save humanity.

Lifelike digital characters are the result of state-of-the-art cameras that record the actors' movements and simultaneously translate them into 3D computer-generated images. Facial movements of actors, captured by small cameras on their heads, were converted into digital facial expressions.

Human pursuit of Pandora's impermanence at all costs leads to savage treatment of the environmentally conscious Na'vi. If there is no Creator and only an impersonal universe, what makes the Na'vi value right and wrong human values. Living Na'vi are able to connect to this living web and communicate with spirits from the past.

But he also spins a husband for Adam from a piece of bone and talks to his creatures in the cool of the day. In the second half of the 20th century, appeals to a pantheistic goddess offered many feminists a neo-pagan path away from Judeo-Christian beliefs. He won't chase you.' The pantheist "God" is a deity in the background, available.

WORD WORLDVIEWWITNESS

While there is some good stuff on TV, a lot of it is either inappropriate or at the very least a complete waste of time. We found that there are several movies with bad or inappropriate story, but still have redeeming selected scenes that we watched as a family. There are many movies and television programs that have a clear good vs. evil storyline that can spark some great conversations about God and the cosmic battle going on “against the rulers, against the powers, against the cosmic forces above this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. places.” (Ephesians 6:12) Discussions about why we are.

Creation

In our home, we have several alternative stations that we turn to to avoid the inappropriate content. It's not convenient or easy, but it's necessary if you want to avoid putting inappropriate things in front of your eyes. This means that there will be many movies that you will never watch or will wait to rent the video so that you will have "editorial" control.

In light of this, I would like to ask you to join me in supporting the students training for ministry at Southern Seminary by contributing to the Annual Fund. Perhaps, like many in the Southern Seminary family, God has blessed you with abundant financial resources. Boyce, launched Southern Seminary as a school dedicated to training ministers for more faithful service.

A desire to serve

From its founding days, Southern Seminary has strived for confessional responsibility through its historic Summary of Principles and a healthy commitment to serving the church of Jesus Christ. One such way to continue the Lord's work posthumously is through a planned gift in your estate to Southern Seminary. We welcome the opportunity to discuss with you how you can simultaneously work with us in furthering the mission of Southern Seminary.

Leaving a legacy through a planned gift to Southern

To ensure that Southern Seminary can continue to provide the very best in theological education, we depend on dedicated supporters who tap into their God-given gifts. In 2006, Kragenbring joined the Southern Seminary Foundation Board and used his professional training in business and finance to assist the Southern Seminary's administration and Board of Trustees in managing the seminary's endowment - a job he has been privileged to calls. Southern Seminary Magazine spoke to Kragenbring about his service to the seminary and also about the importance of creating a financial plan in honor of Christ.

Estate giving as our

To begin with, it is a blessing to work with so many wonderful people on the Foundation Board, as well as Jason Allen and his amazing staff in the Office of Institutional Advancement. Also, the ability to get at least a little involved in the wider life of the seminary is a consistent and constant encouragement. And we have trustees who are committed to excellence in stewardship because they recognize that excellence in the classroom requires excellence in stewardship of the seminary's budget and resources.

So my journey with Southern Seminary started one Sunday afternoon with the students knocking on my front door and inviting me to come to a local church.”. Barnes' formal relationship with Southern Seminary came in 1986 when he was invited to join the Foundation Board. Charles Barnes' introduction to Southern Seminary came as a freshman at the University of Louisville in 1955.

Anderson's business flourished, and by 1907 he was ready to enter into a partnership in the ownership of Miller's Store, a prominent department store in the South. Anderson served as president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention from 1918-20, and was vice president of Southern. He also served as a trustee of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1926-1949 and was chairman of the board of trustees of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1936-1942.

Kentucky

Anderson moved to Knoxville, Tenn., in 1907 to join the management team of Miller's Store as president and chairman of the board, a position he held from 1907 until early 1949, when he resigned from his 41-year career due to ill health . Outside of the office, Anderson was an active member and deacon of his church, the First Baptist Church of Knoxville, and an active Southern Baptist statesman. After the death of his first wife, Anderson married Janie Cree Bose in 1930, then principal of the Baptist Women's Missionary Training School in Louisville, Ky.

An undated, untitled newspaper clipping announcing Anderson's death noted: “Although a man of wealth with a gift for making large sums of money, he was nevertheless a humble Christian man, moved by generous impulses quickly and often to share his abundance with matters. and the institutions he was happy to promote." Anderson's father, a retailer from Kentucky, instilled in his son the value of hard work and the importance of saving money and responsible stewardship. Anderson took his father's advice and by age 22 had saved $2,200, which he used to buy and operate a retail store in Hopkinsville, Ky.

Placing the body in a coffin reminds us of the sleeping metaphor often used in scripture to make it clear that someone who sleeps will also awaken. Scripture points—and the vision on which the hopes of the assembled church and the individual believer are based. This is what we mean when we speak of Christian eschatology - the study of the last things or ultimates.

What does the Bible say?

Our weeping reminds us that death is not natural, but a terrible curse to be abhorred. Our recitation of Psalm 23 and John 11 reminds us that in Christ we are already freed from the power of death - that His story is our story. Burying the body in the earth reminds us that we are only creatures, formed from the clay - but creatures that will one day be called out of the dust again.

The Old Testament

At a funeral, our hymnody is the most theological, the most resistant to the whims and tendencies of Christian music. In Scripture, the eschaton at the end is not simply pasted onto the gospel.

The Kingdom of God

The promises of God of a restoration of creation include material blessings, the inheritance of land promised to the descendants of Abraham, the defeat of all enemies and shalom for the people of God in a new order. Against this hope lies the reality of cosmic death—a reality rooted in the persistence of human death. The Old Testament affirms the inevitability of human death in the post-Eden ages.

The New Testament

God exemplifies these promises by bringing Abraham's seed into the land of Canaan, but always with another horizon before them of permanent, cosmic restoration, in which all their enemies are under their feet and everything is ordered by creation.

At his crucifixion, Jesus relives the onslaught of the nations and the abandonment by God, typical of his ancestor David. In the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, the apostles see the beginning of the last days. Peter identifies the coming of the Spirit with the prophet Joel's promise of the last days and the climax of the Day of the Lord (Acts 2:16-21).
