State Okays Increase In Financial Aid

r e c e n t l y o k a y e d an a d j u s t e d i n c r e a s e of $300.00 f o r first- t i m e r e c i p i e n t s of Tuition A s s i s t a n c e P r o g r a m ( T A P ) . This is one of s e v e r a l new financial aid p r o g r a m s t h a t will e f f e c t Alfred University s t u d e n t s n e x t fall.

Basic E d u c a t i o n a l Oppor- tunity G r a n t (B.E.O.G.) h a s b r o a d e n e d its b a s e to allow m o r e s t u d e n t s to be eligible for its f u n d s . Its m a x i m u m h a s been i n c r e a s e d f r o m

$1400.00 to $1600.00.

The Louis Calder F o u n d a - tion has g r a n t e d $20,000.00 to

be alloted to s t u d e n t s f r o m the New Y o r k m e t r o p o l i t a n a r e a . Half of t h a t a m o u n t will be a v a i l a b l e for t h e '78-'79 a c a d e m i c y e a r .

I n c o m i n g t r a n s f e r n u r s i n g s t u d e n t s n e x t fall will be eligible for a p a r t of t h e

$20,000.00 f r o m the T e a g l e F o u n d a t i o n .

The Allstate F o u n d a t i o n h a s contributed $550.00 to be a w a r d e d to one or two n u r s e s a t t e n d i n g St. J o h n F i s h e r in R o c h e s t e r n e x t fall.

All of t h e s e a s s i s t a n c e p r o g r a m s will allot f u n d s a c c o r d i n g to financial need.

Two New Societies Formed

According to D r . E r n e s t E n k e , p r o f e s s o r of a c c o u n t - i n g , t h e p u r p o s e of t h e society is to offer a s e r i e s of p r o g r a m s of i n t e r e s t f o r b u s i n e s s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n m a - j o r s . . " W e w a n t to c r e a t e a m o r e professional a t t i t u d e in the business d e p a r t m e n t , " he said.

S o m e p r o g r a m s i n c l u d e t o u r s of i n d u s t r i a l p l a n t s in Wellsville, R o c h e s t e r , a n d New York City, and h a v i n g professional b u s i n e s s m e n to l e c t u r e on " h o w their f u n c - tion in the business world r e l a t e s to w h a t w e ' r e t e a c h - ing h e r e , " E n k e said.

Also, r e s u m e e writing ses- sions and l e c t u r e s on inter- viewing t e c h n i q u e s a r e b e i n g p l a n n e d . " T h i s p r o g r a m is for kids who a r e i n t e r e s t e d in education, not j u s t e a r n i n g a d e g r e e and getting out of h e r e . ByGil Bodane The Alfred University Col- lege of N u r s i n g h a s r e c e n t l y established a local honor society t h a t is professional in n a t u r e , and working t o w a r d a c c e p t a n c e a s a c h a p t e r of t h e n a t i o n a l o r g a n i z a t i o n Sigma Theta T a u .

S i g m a Theta T a u ' s n a m e w a s chosen using the initials of the Greek words: S t o r g a , T h a r o s , T i m a - m e a n i n g love, c o u r a g e , h o n o r . F r o m a beginning of six m e m b e r s and one c h a p t e r in 1922 it h a s grown to m o r e than 25,000 m e m b e r s and 76 c h a p t e r s . I t is a m e m b e r of the a s s o c i a - tion of College Honor Socie- ties.

This local society follows the national goals, s t a n d a r d s and r e q u i r e m e n t s . M e m b e r - ship is by invitation only.

M e m b e r s h i p a s s u m e s a c c e p - t a n c e of the p u r p o s e s of t h e society and responsibility to p a r t i c i p a t e in achieving t h e goals consistent with t h e professional and scholastic c h a r a c t e r of Sigma T h e t a T a u .

P u r p o s e s of the o r g a n i z a - tion h a v e been stated as:

1. Recognition of s u p e r i o r a c h i e v e m e n t

2. Recognition of the devel- o p m e n t of l e a d e r s h i p quali- ties

3. F o s t e r i n g of high profes- sional s t a n d a r d s

4. E n c o u r a g e m e n t of c r e a - tive work

5. S t r e n g t h e n i n g of c o m - m i t m e n t to t h e ideals a n d p u r p o s e s of t h e profession.

T h e f i r s t i n d u c t i o n , on S e p t e m b e r 17, 1977, h o n o r e d 25 n u r s e s , a n d was followed by a p r o g r a m f e a t u r i n g t h e E l m i r a P s y c h i a t r i c P l a y e r s . Following t h e second in- d u c t i o n on April 18, 1978 t h e c h a p t e r e x p e c t s to i n c r e a s e m e m b e r s h i p to 50.

Sigma Theta T a u is open to a l u m n i , u p p e r level u n d e r - g r a d u a t e s a n d f a c u l t y .

Students Attend Coalition Meeting

By Christine Monsrud T h r e e A l f r e d University students a t t e n d e d the Inde- p e n d e n t S t u d e n t C o a l i t i o n (ISC) m e e t i n g on M a r c h 11 and 12. Mark Brostoff, presi- d e n t of the Student S e n a t e ; L a r r y F r e i r i c h , Alfred r e p r e - s e n t a t i v e to the ISC, a n d M a r k M a t t a r , a l t e r n a t i v e r e p r e s e n t a t i v e , w e r e t h e A l f r e d p a r t i c i p a n t s . T h e m e e t i n g was held in Albany and w a s the second s t a t e - wide a s s e m b l y ISC m e e t i n g held.

According to the ISC Con- stitution, its goals a r e a s follows:

1) " T o e n h a n c e the c u l t u r a l , civic, economic and social life of the people of New Y o r k State by w o r k i n g to obtain a higher e d u c a t i o n system t h a t is of u n s u r p a s s e d q u a l i t y ,

a n d o n e t h a t g u a r a n t e e s a c a d e m i c f r e e d o m , a s s u r e s e n r o l l m e n t a c c e s s to all who would profit t h e r e f r o m , a n d provides genuine opportunity for the b r o a d e s t r a n g e of individual s t u d e n t choice in the a d m i s s i o n s selection pro-

c e s s . " 2) " T o i n s u r e a d e - q u a t e levels of s t a t e aid f o r all i n d e p e n d e n t institutions of h i g h e r education in New Y o r k S t a t e . " 3) " T o g u a r a n - tee the p a r t i c i p a t i o n of t h e s t u d e n t s of t h e i n d e p e n d e n t sector in all policy decisions r e l a t i n g t o h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n . " 4) " T o s e r v e a s a c o u r c e of i n f o r m a t i o n and to d i s s e m i n a t e t h a t i n f o r m a t i o n to the v a r i o u s schools and to f a c i l i t a t e the flow of i n f o r m a - t i o n a m o n g t h e v a r i o u s schools."'

The focus of the m e e t i n g w a s to show s u p p o r t of t h e G o v e r n o r ' s r e c o m m e n d a t i o n to t h e 1978-79 E x e c u t i v e B u d g e t .

The ISC f a v o r s t h r e e m a j o r issues: 1) K e e p i n g the Gov- e r n o r ' s m e c h a n i s m of pro- viding i n c r e a s e s in TAP for all s t u d e n t s . 2) Lifting t h e lim it from $11,000 net t a x a b l e i n c o m e for i n c o m e eligibility r e q u i r e m e n t s . 3) I n c r e a s i n g the eligibility for the m a x - i m u m a w a r d f r o m $2000 n e t t a x a b l e i n c o m e to $3,500, r a t h e r than to $2750 a s t h e G o v e r n o r h a s r e c o m m e n d e d .

The ISC a l s o voted on f o u r p r o p o s a l s c o n c e r n i n g v a r i o u s i s s u e s all of which w e r e p a s s e s . The p r o p o s a l s w e r e : 1) T h e p l a c e m e n t of a t l e a s t one s t u d e n t t r u s t e e on t h e b o a r d s of t r u s t e e s of inde- p e n d e n t s e c t o r colleges. This t r u s t e e would b e g r a n t e d all the r i g h t s a n d p r i v i l d e g e s a c c o r d e d to voting m e m b e r s of the board of t r u s t e e s of e a c h individual college. 2) T h e i m p l e m e n t a t i o n of a toll-free telephone line to t h e H i g h e r E d u c a t i o n S e r v i c e s Corporation, to be used by s t u d e n t s i n q u i r i n g about T A P a w a r d s . 3) A c o m p l e t e s t u d y of possible f o r m s of f i r e s a f e t y u n d e r t a k e n by t h e l e g i s l a t u r e , 4) An i n c r e a s e in the m a x i m u m a w a r d in T A P for g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t s f r o m the p r e s e n t $600 to $1800.

M a r k Brostoff e x p l a i n e d the ISC a s " h a v i n g developed into a p r o f e s s i o n a l lobbying g r o u p in our s t a t e capitol a n d all s t u d e n t s a t Alfred as well a s s t u d e n t s t h r o u g h o u t t h e i n d e p e n d e n t sector of New Y o r k benefit f r o m the activi- ties of the coalition."

The d e a t h a n d hospitaliza- tions r e s u l t i n g from t h e K l a n Alpine initiation on F r i d a y , F e b r u a r y 24th can be m o r e c l e a r l y u n d e r s t o o d when one d r a w s out the significance Of intiation c e r e m o n i e s . As a sociology p r o f e s s o r who r e g - u l a r l y guides his s t u d e n t s through such a n a l y s e s in class, I c u r r e n t l y find myself in a q u a n d a r y of m i x e d emotions, h a v i n g also, in t h e e a r l y sixties, been a m e m b e r of Klan Alpine.

In sociology we r e f e r to

" r i t e s of p a s s a g e , " the cul- t u r a l l y d i f f e r e n t r i t u a l s s y m - bolizing m o v e m e n t from one s t a t u s to a n o t h e r , in this c a s e , from t h a t of non-frat- e r n i t y m e m b e r to K l a n Alpine pledge.

The initiation itself s e e m s r a t h e r c r u d e . W h a t is ulti- m a t e l y p r o v e d by o n e ' s ability to d r i n k and e i t h e r

" h o l d it well" or "blow o n e ' s l u n c h ? " P r a g m a t i c a l l y , no- thing. Symbolically, in f a c t , it b e c o m e s quite m e a n i n g f u l given the society in which it o c c u r s .

W h a t is a c t u a l l y t r a n s p i r - ing h e r e is a m asculinity r i t e . How does the A m e r i c a n m a l e b e s t d e m o n s t r a t e the m a s c u - linity rite. How does t h e A m e r i c a n m a l e best d e m o n - s t r a t e the m a s c u l i n i t y he is c o n s t a n t l y so p r e s s u r e d to exhibit? D e f l o w e r i n g virgins is one a v e n u e . E x c e l l i n g a t s p o r t s a n o t h e r . Some find solace in b e c o m i n g " g o o d , "

" h a r d " d r i n k e r s . Being a b l e to " h o l d your booze." W h a t a m a n . . . o r so w e a r e led to believe by a d v e r t i s e m e n t s a n d the m e d i a . Like it or not, A m e r i c a is a d r i n k i n g society. D r i n k i n g and over- d r i n k i n g b e c o m e the n o r m s a t f r a t e r n i t y initiation ri- t u a l s . Such frivolity is a n e x p e c t e d p a r t of e v e n t s inbued with a n x i e t y .

T h u s , a t K l a n A l p i n e F r a t e r n i t y , a tapping n i g h t r i t u a l , the r o o t s of which d a t e b a c k s o m e fifty y e a r s , a n d e d in t r a g e d y . T h e climax of a n x i e t y - f u l l e d w e e k s , t h e r e i n f o r c e m e n t of b r o t h e r l y solidarity, a n d a need for t h e e x p r e s s i o n of virility, com- bined to r e s u l t in the d e a t h of one young f r e s h m a n a n d the hospitalization of two o t h e r s .

My feelings, n a t u r a l l y , a r e d e r i v e d f r o m a period, rough- ly f i f t e n y e a r s ago, w h e n

d u r i n g an e r a of r e s t r i c t i v e f r a t e r n i t y " c l a u s e s , " Alfred U n i v e r s i t y ' s K l a n A l p i n e stood a s the idealistic bastion of n o n - s e c t a r i a n i s m , w h e r e no one g a v e a d a m n if you w e r e Catholic or J e w i s h , w h e t h e r your p a r e n t s w e r e m illionaries or if you had j u s t a r r i v e d in t h i s c o u n t r y . U n w a v e r i n g loyalties for t h e House, its b r o t h e r s and m o s t i m p o r t a n t l y its ideals w e r e g e n e r a t e d t h r o u g h group ac- t i v i t i e s , be t h e y p a r t i e s , c l e a n u p s , or a " t a p p i n g "

initiation.

" T a p p i n g " symbolized t h e beginning of a period of socialization c r e a t e d to instill those feelings of solidarity e x i s t e n t a m o n g b r o t h e r s . While o u t s i d e r s m i g h t easily view the over consumption of alcohol a s b e h a v i o r c h a r a c - teristic of a d o l e s c e n t s at- t e m p t i n g to r e a f f i r m t h e i r m a n h o o d , t h e r e n e v e r t h e l e s s e x i s t s the v e r y r e a l f a c t t h a t the t r a d i t i o n s e r v e s to rein- f o r c e i m p o r t a n t , socially ap- proved v a l u e s . I n t e n s e feel- ings of loyalty c e m e n t i n g s u p p o r t for, a m o n g o t h e r b e l i e f s , n o n s e c t a r i a n i s m , c e r t a i n l y r e p r e s e n t s a highly v a l u e d A m e r i c a n ideal.

S o m e w h e r e between m y y e a r s in K l a n a n d t h e p r e s e n t , the r i t u a l in which I had so often p a r t i c i p a t e d both a s pledge and b r o t h e r , e v i d e n t l y u n d e r w e n t a c h a n g e . T h e c e r e m o n y known to m e consisted of s i m p l y t h e a w a r d i n g of pledge pins a n d the downing of ¡ n u m e r a b l e m u g s of b e e r . H a z i n g w a s non-existant.

I g r e w a lot in Klan Alpine, possibly m o r e than d u r i n g a n y other f o u r y e a r s e g m e n t of m y a d u l t life, and so now t h e r e is pain t h a t such t r a g i c e v e n t s a s h a v e o c c u r e d , c o u l d h a v e t a k e n p l a c e d u r i n g s u c h a m e a n i n g m o m e n t of r e v e l r y .

Should t h e tradition be c h a n g e d , w h e n so m a n y o t h e r s b e f o r e h a v e p a r t i c i p a - ted without f a t a l r e p e r c u s - sions? I s t h e r e a v a i l a b l e a n o t h e r , less d a n g e r o u s , ini- t i a t i o n r i t u a l c a p a b l e of s a t i s f y i n g the s a m e needs?

T h e problem I see with Allen term is t h a t it is too a c a d e m i c a l l y o r i e n t e d . I n m y five y e a r s of u n d e r g r a d - u a t e and g r a d u a t e s t u d i e s h e r e , I h a v e t a k e n t h r e e A l l e n t e r m s , a n d unofficially w o r k e d on a f o u r t h . I n 1971-1972, A l l e n t e r m w a s loosely run. People could choose from m a n y d i f f e r e n t t h i n g s t h a t t h e y w a n t e d to do r a t h e r than confine t h e m - s e l v e s to a c a d e m i a , c l a s s - room instruction and r e p o r t s . I believe personally t h a t Allenterm is b e t t e r spent a s a t i m e when a s t u d e n t can do the things s / he w a n t s to do, be it skiing, w i n t e r c a m p i n g , a n a l y z i n g clay, or building h a n g gliders. The i m p o r t a n t a s p e c t is t h a t a s t u d e n t s t a r t with s o m e d e f i n a b l e goal a n d work towards t h a t goal in a responsible w a y .

I h a v e s e e n A l l e n t e r m b e c o m e m o r e r e s t r i c t i v e , a n d less appealing. My m o s t m e a n i n g f u l Allenterm w a s an i n d e p e n d e n t study t h a t two of us did in 1974. T h e p r o j e c t w a s s o m e t h i n g t h a t we really w a n t e d to do s o m e t i m e d u r i n g our lives, but would n e v e r have t h e opportunity d u r i n g the r e g u - l a r school y e a r (or a f t e r l e a v i n g school). The p r o j e c t w a s r e j e c t e d on the f i r s t evaluation b e c a u s e it w a s not a c a d e m i c e n o u g h . I a m h a p p y t h a t a f t e r a l t e r a t i o n s , the p r o j e c t w a s a c c e p t e d b e c a u s e it r e p r e s e n t e d s o m e - thing t h a t I will never f o r g e t .

If Allenterm is s o m e t h i n g for the s t u d e n t s , I think it should be l e s s r e s t r i c t i v e , allow g r e a t e r flexibility, a n d h a v e less e m p h a s i s on b e i n g

" a c a d e m i c " . If Allenterm is for t h e school's benefit, t h e n t r e a t it a s c o u r s e work a n d a s s i g n c r e d i t h o u r s to it, so it h a s a p r e c i s e m e a s u r e of v a l u e outside of Alfred Uni- v e r s i t y . A f t e r all, if t h e g o a l of Allenterm is not p e r s o n a l f u l f i l l m e n t , then it should p r o v i d e a g r e a t e r m e a s u r e of e x t r i n s i c r e w a r d t h a n i t c u r r e n t l y does.

J a c k D a u g h t e r y , o w n e r / o p e r a - tor of a firm t h a t h a s b u i l t m a n y housing p r o j e c t s for the elderly in r u r a l a r e a s , w a s on hand to help the g r o u p d e t e r m i n e if t h e r e is a m a r k e t in our c o m m u n i t y . The p r o j e c t s t h a t Mr. D a u g h - t e r y ' s firm builds, under t h e supervision of the F a r m e r ' s H o m e A d m i n i s t r a t i o n , pro- vide low r e n t housing for t h e e l d e r l y and t h e h a n d i c a p p e d . L e e R y a n , f o r m e r county legislator, led the discussion outlining the p r e s e n t pro- b l e m s with solid w a s t e dis- p o s a l in this a r e a . He said

Daredevils Make for Great Show

H i c k m a n T a k e two diversified r o c k - c o u n t r y / r o c k g r o u p s , a s t a g e along with lighting e f f e c t s a n d 2600 people, a n d you have one f a n t a s t i c con- c e r t . This is e x a c t l y w h a t t h e Ozark M o u n t a i n Daredevils and the S a n d f o r d and Town- s e n d B a n d c o n c e r t w a s , F r i . , M a r c h 17, a t M c L a n e C e n t e r .

T a k i n g the s t a g e f i r s t w a s the Sandford and Townsend B a n d . They got t h e show off to a rousing s t a r t with songs r a n g i n g from jazz to rock to t a k e o f f s on c l a s s i c a l pieces.

The band p u t t h e a u d i e n c e into g e a r for w h a t they w e r e to e x p e r i e n c e r i g h t a f t e r i n t e r m i s s i o n .

This e x p e r i e n c e w a s t h e Ozark M o u n t a i n D a r e d e v i l s . They did m u s i c r a n g i n g f r o m c o u n t r y to r o c k to b l u e g r a s s with the help of an electric h a r m o n i c a , violin, slide gui- t a r , d r u m s , g u i t a r s , piano, and b a n j o .

In an interview a f t e r t h e c o n c e r t , Mike G r a n d a , gui- t a r i s t and v o c a l i s t , said t h a t the D a r e d e v i l s a r e all f r o m

Springfield MO. T h e b a n d in its p r e s e n t s t a t e h a s b e e n t o g e t h e r a b o u t a year and a h a l f . The D a r e d e v i l s h a v e b e e n a g r o u p for six y e a r s a n d t h r e e m o n t n s .

This y e a r t h e r e is a t l e a s t one group of s t u d e n t s who will head south, not to p a r t y , but to work out. T h a t g r o u p is t h e A l f r e d U n i v e r s i t y L a c r o s s e t e a m .

The s t i c k m e n , whose f i r s t official g a m e is April 6th, will t r a v e l south in order to p l a y s o m e p r e s e a s o n exhibitions and p r a c t i c e on good fields in good w e a t h e r .
