English plays an important role in academic societies at all levels, from the primary school to university. Of the four English skills, reading is the skill that most contributes to the English proficiency that students should have. Reading is a habitual activity that enhances a student's personality, intelligence, and literacy. In addition, reading also builds a student vocabulary that improves other skills. It means that the more a person reads, the more they will develop their language like grammar and vocabulary knowledge. However, each person has different reading habits that depend on their interest. Reading newspaper is essential for young learners to be more responsive. In this case, the researcher was interested in conducting research on the correlation between students’ habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery.
The research implemented correctional research design with a reading questionnaire and vocabulary mastery test. The data collected from 15 intermediate students of FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute. The data were analyzed by using descriptive quantitative research and Pearson product moment coefficient correlation in SPSS version 20.
The result of the study showed that the students’ habit in reading newspaper has high level with the mean value at 4.00. furthermore, the students’ vocabulary mastery is in the very high categories. It can be concluded that students’ habit in reading newspaper increase their vocabulary mastery. The last result showed that the probability value in this research was 0.018 and the Pearson correlation was at 0.59 which was in moderate correlation category. It means that the correlation between students’ habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery is significantly correlated and was at moderate correlation classification category.
Based on the finding of the study, it is addressed that students who often reading newspaper can increase their vocabulary mastery, so students have to improve and increase their habit in reading. It is also suggested for the English teacher to be a good motivator and support their interest in reading newspaper. For the future research, it is suggested to use more participants or instruments to get deeper analysis about students’ habit in reading and vocabulary mastery.
1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents some topics related to the background of the study, research problems, objective of the study, significance of the study, scope, and limitation of the study, and the definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
There are four skills required when people learn English, those are listening, writing, reading and speaking. In learning English, the students should master the language components to support the four skills, such as: phonological, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. They should master these language components.
Reading skills are seen as a means of communication in written language in the form of magazines, textbooks, newspapers, and others. Thus, reading skills are important for students who most learning English through written texts.
Reading is the process of obtaining information from written text, from author to reader (Rahayuningsih, 2020). To understand more about the reading text, students have to think and feel the meaning of each word they read in the text. Reading is an activity which can increase vocabulary. Based on Inderjit (2014), reading habit can help English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students increase their vocabulary. When students read a lot, they will get much knowledge and information from what they read. Reading habit is one of the most important elements supporting students' achievement. Reading is an important aspect that shapes an individual’s personality
and aids in the development of proper thinking methods and creating new ideas (Palani, 2012). It can be deduced that reading habit in build personality in thinking, get use to detailed information, cultivate a variety of thinking about the things in their life, more controllable in responding wrong problem and have wider knowledge.
Vocabulary is the most important aspect of learning English that students must master. It is one of aspects that connect to the four skills of learning English. Students should have and understand the use of a large vocabulary to properly communicate in a second language. This is important component in gaining and understanding the language. Vocabulary has major role in reading comprehension. The greater a person's vocabulary, the easier it is for him or her to understand the passage (Nofia, Nargis and Anggraini, 2019). Therefore, it will sound good if students understand vocabulary when they read text. It will help students to pronounce and find the main idea of the reading text. According to Hornby (2019), there are two types of vocabulary. To begin, active vocabulary is defined as words that are challenging to practice but that the learner can use effectively in listening and writing. It means that, students have to know how to pronounce things clearly and understand words used in sentences in order they can use the vocabulary.
Foreign Language Development Institute (FLDI) of Nurul Jadid has many activities that require the students to know the latest news, such speech and discussion. Because FLDI is an institution based on dormitory and sheltered by a boarding school which prohibits students from bringing advanced tools, such smartphone, laptop, and computer, students usually read newspaper to obtain the new
3
news about what happened to world. Besides, there are many activities that use newspaper, such as reading day on Tuesday afternoon, translation activity, and news reading or news anchor activity. However, many students looked bored, confused when they read newspaper and they found it challenging to comprehend the text's meaning as well. That might happen because they have small size of vocabulary.
Based on the background above, the researcher conducts the research in FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute, entitled “Students’ Habit in Reading Newspaper and Their Vocabulary Mastery: A Correlation Study”.
1.2 Research Problems
The research problems of this study are:
1. How is the profile of students’ habit in reading newspaper at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute?
2. How is the vocabulary mastery at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute?
3. Is there any correlation between reading habits and vocabulary mastery at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute?
1.3 Objective of the Study
Referring to the research problems above, the objectives of this study are:
1. To describe the students’ habit in reading newspaper at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute.
2. To describe the vocabulary mastery at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute.
3. To find out the correlation between students’ habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute.
1.4 Hypothesis of the Study
There are two hypotheses in this study; those are Alternative hypothesis (Ha) and Null hypothesis (Ho) as follow:
1. Alternative hypothesis (Ha): there is a significance correlation between habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute.
2. Null hypothesis (Ho): there is no significant correlation between habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery at FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute.
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study expected two aspects, both theoretical and practical aspects.
Theoretically, this study was expected to give a higher quality in students’ reading and their vocabulary. Also, it provides beneficial information about the relationship between students’ habit in reading and their vocabulary mastery is reagent contributing to structure and vocabulary knowledge development. Practically, for the reader, this study gives information of developing reading habit in newspaper that will benefit for vocabulary mastery. Therefore, by developing a reading habit, students’ vocabulary will be improved. Teachers should facilitate more reading newspaper activities so that students could enhance their vocabulary.
5
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the study
The research focuses on intermediate level of FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute.
This is an English course that runs under the auspices of the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School in Probolinggo city, East Java, Indonesia. This course is divided into two parts, those are course for male and female. However, due to the limited access in permission of Islamic boarding school, the researcher was not allowed to access the male course, so this research was only conducted in female course. Thus, the data collected could be obtained from fifteen students of intermediate level as the participants who are identified significantly. Also, this research only focuses on the students’ habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
To prevent misunderstanding and ambiguity, key terms are defined. Some of the terms used in this study needed to be defined.
1. Correlation is a mutual relationship or connection between two or more variables.
In this research context is between reading newspaper and vocabulary mastery.
2. Habit in reading is an activity which done regularly to comprehend information and enjoy written material. In this study, habit in reading was defined as reading English newspapers activities that carried out by students to increase their vocabulary.
3. Newspaper is a form of printed paper contains of current information about current news, events, sports, market, entertainments and etc. In this study,
newspaper is a way for students to know what happened around and whole world.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter presents the summary of the research related to some topics and also the suggestions for the teachers, students, and the further research.
5.1 CONCLUSION
To conclude, 15 students of intermediate level in FLDI Nurul Jadid Islamic Institute are students who have good vocabulary score which are influenced by their habit in reading newspaper. By the factor of students’ interest and the use of newspaper as the media, students can more easily improve their reading skill, especially in vocabulary mastery. The researcher found that the mean of students’
habit in reading newspaper is 4.00. It indicated in the high category. With that, habit in reading newspaper is one of the most effective learning media because it greatly influences students’ vocabulary mastery.
In proving the hypothesis, the relationship between students’ habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery can bring positive results. It can be seen from the results of the data analyzed, the Ha (Alternative hypothesis) was accepted and the Ho (Null hypothesis) was rejected. This was because the significant value calculated 0.18 is smaller than 0,05 (p-value = 0,18 < 0.05). This means that there is significant correlation between students’ habit in reading newspaper and their vocabulary mastery. According to Syaifuddin (2011) stated that If students have a good reading habit in English, they will have a high quality vocabulary mastery, and
vice versa. Also, Sandewa (2018) stated that reading habit is the main factor to improve vocabulary mastery.
5.2 SUGGESTIONS
After the current research has been conducted by the researcher, there are some suggestions that the researcher wants to express, those are:
5.2.1 For the Students
Based on the findings of this study, the researcher would like to advise students to upgrade and broaden their habit in reading newspaper. Habit in reading has some effects in developing skills, such us getting some new vocabularies, spelling and grammar skill. Also, reading newspaper will increase students’ information and insight about the world outside the cottage.
5.2.2 For the English Teachers
The teachers should be a source of motivation and encourage students to read newspaper. The teacher should assist students in mastering vocabulary by selecting appropriate reading materials based on the students' characteristics. Also, the teacher has to know the hot topic about todays’ newspaper. So, the students fell interest in reading newspaper.
5.2.3 For Future Researchers
The researcher would like to provide suggestions for further researchers to conduct a study about other factors of habit in reading newspaper as an influence on vocabulary mastery that provide more advantages than before. Besides, it can use other way to increase vocabulary mastery, such as song, movie, and video. Also,
35
based on the researcher experience, the next researcher can conduct interview as additional instrument in collecting the data needed.
