Students' perception of teacher characteristics in English teaching (A Descriptive Research at Eight Grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa). This research aimed to know the students' perception of teacher qualities in teaching English in 8th grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa. The population of this research consisted of the students of Eight Grade at SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa in the academic year 2018/2019.

Based on data analysis, it was found that the average score of the student perception questionnaire on Teacher Characteristic of Patience was 89.17%. This means excellent because 89.17% is in the range from 81% to 100% means the teacher's patience is excellent, creative was 78.75% it means good and empathy 85% it means excellent. The writer has received advice and guidance from a number of people from various participations in the preparation and completion of this thesis. The writer would like to say a huge thank you to her parents (Muh Tahir and Hj.Ida) who gave her the best support, prayers and sacrifices throughout her life.

The writer acknowledges that many hands contributed help and helpful suggestions to complete this task. Finally, the writer commits everything to Allah SWT and the writer hopes that this will be beneficial for the writer herself and for everyone in improving the quality of education.

Based on the foregoing background, the researcher formulates the research question as follows: How is the perception of the students about the teacher characteristic when teaching English to the eighth grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa. The objectives of the study are to find out the students' perceptions about the characteristics of teachers when teaching English to the eighth grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa. Because the writer himself can gain a lot of knowledge about students' perceptions about the characteristics of teachers when teaching English.

For readers, they will gain great knowledge and information about students' perceptions of teachers' characteristics in teaching English. The result of the research can be useful for the English teacher in making additional contributions to English teaching based on the students' perception of the teacher's characteristics in English teaching. It was evaluated based on students' perception in English teaching in the eighth grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa.

Lindsay and Norman (1997) argue that perception is the process by which the organism interprets and organizes sensations to produce a meaningful experience of the world. Ross (1995) finds that terms exist in psychology science for processing the information received from the observations; one such term is perception. This visual image of the external thing became perception when it was interpreted in the visual cortex of the brain.

Visual perception therefore refers to the interpretation of the image of the external world that is projected onto the retina of the eye and the construction of a model of the three-dimensional world. It correlates, integrates and comprehends diverse sensations and information from many organs of the body. Each of the community learns to emphasize some sensory input and to ignore others.

Another cool example of this is movies we watch or what used to be called "moving pictures". The movement of the characters in movies appear to be moving, but they really aren't. Other philosophers of the 18th and 19th centuries sought to explain the notion of time as arising from the association and recollection of successive perceptions. Indicators used in measuring teachers' social competence include the ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, fellow teachers and education staff, and students' parents/guardians and the community.

Population and Sample

In this part, the researcher explains research design, population and sample, instrument of the research, method of data collection and technique of data analysis. Non-probability sampling focuses on sampling techniques where the units investigate based on the judgment of the researcher. In this study, the sample is one eighth grade class of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa.

The researcher believes that by using Purposive Sampling Technique the objective of this study can be achieved. According to Sugiyono, purposive sampling is a technique to talk about sample data sources based on considerations or focus of a particular sample. The goal is to maximize information, not to facilitate generalization, because the research is the students' perception of teacher characteristics in English teaching, where the researcher wants to collect information about the students' perception.

Instrument of the Research

The questionnaire aims to give the researcher the opportunity to collect data from a number of people and the good thing about descriptive questionnaire is that they are flexible and can be worded in different ways to allow participant to answers. Likert scale is used to measure attitudes, opinions and perceptions of a person or group of people about social phenomena. This interview consisted of only five questions, covering the question and feedback as the problem statement in this research refers.

Data Collection Method

For example, if the interpretation score of patience is between 81%-100%, it means that the teacher's patience is excellent. On the contrary, if the creativity is in the range of 21%-40%, the teacher's creativity is weak. The finding covers the data of teacher's personality competence characteristics in teaching English which consists of patience, empathy and creativity.

Categorized excellent because 89.17% is in the range of 81% to 100% means the teacher's patience is excellent.

To make it clear, students' perceptions of teachers' characteristics can be represented in the figure below using a pie chart. The students said that with a good quality, the teacher can influence their attitude, add to their knowledge and make the students more confident. In addition, the character of the teacher also prepares the students to understand it based on the teacher's explanation of the material.

The answer to the research question was that students' perception of teacher qualities in teaching English at Eight Grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa is positive. The positive response came from the students' perception that they are happy and so much fun if the teacher is always creative and empathetic towards them. The students also said that the teacher's creativity will make them struggle to learn and not bored. It can be seen from the students' perception where the students' perception of the eighth grade teacher's qualities in patience was excellent, creativity was good and empathy was excellent.

It can be concluded that the Perception of the students towards the teacher's characteristic in the eighth grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa was excellent.

Discussion

In this part, the researcher explains students' perception of the teacher's characteristics when teaching English to the eighth grade of SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa and students' perception of the teacher's characteristics using a pie chart. Students' perceptions of the teacher's characteristic in teaching English in eighth grade from SMP Pesantren Guppi Samata Gowa. Based on the above research results, it appeared that students responded positively to the teacher trait.

It is related to the research findings by Amoo and Rahman (2004) they said that, the characteristics of the teacher can affect their attitude towards economics or any other school subject. A teacher who scores high on these indices in student perception is likely to enjoy the trust, respect, and admiration of students. The teacher who had different characteristics such as creative patience and emphasis makes the students more interesting to learn especially in English.

Both parties were also of the opinion that there were certain verbal and non-verbal immediate behaviors that teachers performed that could be the source of motivation as well as demotivation of the students. As presented on findings, results show that respondents had positive perception about teacher characteristics in teaching English. This can be seen from the results of questionnaires. The students also said that games can make their class better and fun to study.

Also, the teacher should be able to increase and increase knowledge about creative materials, such as what students like. The teacher can understand the feelings of other students. (Guru mampu memahami perasaan siswa lainnya).
