China – IUPUI's Confucius Institute is the centerpiece of the university's collaboration with Sun Yat-sen University in China. Before we became partners, it seemed that the students were participating in “glorified recess.” The end result is that only the most athletic or fit children participated.

Sports management is rewarding, but overnight success is rare, he says, adding: “You need passion, the ability to get along with different types of people and a willingness to work hard to be successful. On the research side, she continues to study racial, national and gender portrayals of athletes in the media (the topic of her doctoral dissertation) and the use of technology in the sports management classroom. I learned from this experience that if you don't ask, you'll never know," she says.
Eagleman says she can't wait to meet her students during an introduction to sports management and sports ethics. That, along with building relationships with my new colleagues and working on research projects, is what I am most looking forward to now,” she says. Here are a few things to know about Andrea Eagleman, Ph.D., recently appointed to the department.

Unfortunately, Expo was hit early and hard by the downturn in the economy, which resulted in me being laid off,” says Maria. She is an active adult learner and challenges teachers to keep the information relevant. Coleman attended the school's predecessor school (Normal College) for two years before transferring to Butler University.
Although she has only been involved with PETM for two years, her ties to the school remain strong, so much so that she leaves a remaining portion of her estate to the school by means of a bequest. By working in the library, I was still able to participate in school events, but I didn't have all the papers to grade!”. These memories, along with rising tuition costs, helped Coleman decide to make a gift through a bequest benefiting the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management.
I always supported the sports teams and went to all the athletic activities at the schools I worked in. One of the things that amazed me was the variety of students there. There were so many amazing gymnasts, and they gave me a view of the field that I would never have had otherwise.

Did you know that there is a way you can endow the College of Sports Culture and Tourism Management without missing out on funds you may need for the future. In addition, we recommend using a simple document called a gift agreement that will allow you to precisely direct the use of your gift at school or camp. In these times of economic uncertainty, people tend to let go of the necessities of life and focus on the things that seem most important to them.
Think about the time you spent getting your education and what it has meant to you throughout your life and to your family. Now think about what your gift through your estate can mean for the legacy of these two important institutions. It's less threatening to say, 'Let's try not to gain more weight,' than it is to say, 'You need to lose 15 pounds,'" says Keith. If we can offer it more as a way to be fit so that they can take better care of their families, it is more palatable for them," she says. It's one thing to educate the community about how to be active and eat right - it's another thing to get people to maintain good practices.
And if they're told they have to do this for the rest of their lives to stay fit, you can see why it's not that appealing. This new method is known as Kaatsu, which is Japanese and means 'extra pressure'. It has been shown to increase muscle strength and size without heavy weights. And Cohen adds: “It's a bit like having a mentor on your first job – how great is that?”.
Class Helps IUPUI Get INShape
That's what Liz Cohen wondered—albeit in a good way—when she volunteered to take a final physical education course. Rachel Swinford, MS, a lecturer in the physical education department, recruited Cohen — who is also the assistant director of campus recreation — to work on the new program while the two discussed an upcoming program partnership. "Students are assessed on the development of their exercise prescriptions, and when they pass health checks, their skills are tested," he says.
My case was a little different, because I taught physical education for a living for years," she says. In addition to being a student, she has worked in the health field for the past four years and has had experience with populations with special health needs. It couldn't be more authentic or real, experientially, and at the same time all our students are closely supervised," she says.

When you're introduced to the idea of "alternative exercise," you might think of Wii Fit and Dance Dance Revolution, which some schools use for physical education. While active games such as these appear to offer opportunities for appropriate vigorous physical activity," he says, "getting individuals to use this technology regularly is still a challenge. In addition, Streepey, along with Kevin Houston, an optometrist at the IU School of Optometry, studies spatial orientation and balance in patients with spatial neglect ("where they only see half of their spatial hemisphere," he says).
We agreed that there could be an automated way to do some of the clinical steps that we were doing. If the prototype is ready this summer, we should be able to start testing it in the fall," he says. Also, a computerized device to automate measurement of the extent of the disorder or treatment effectiveness would fill a current diagnostic gap.
Social Media and Virtual Reality
Kevin came up with the idea of using virtual reality, something I used extensively during my post-doctoral training at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. We then decided to combine a head mounted display (fancy goggles) that would project the virtual reality image while using a magnetic tracking device to record hand positions as it moved through the room. Thanks to funding through a grant received from the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, Streepey and Houston are working with the IUPUI Advanced Visualization Lab to create a prototype they call a “Spatial Analyzer.
Patients can be those with any type of brain injury, such as a stroke, that causes problems with spatial orientation, Streepey says.
Tools for Exercise and Research
By doing this, we were able to quickly measure whether there was a mismatch between where an individual believed he or she saw a target in virtual reality and where that individual reached. However, a standardized method for the diagnosis and management of spatial localization disorders is needed. Using affordable, commercially available motion capture and virtual-reality hardware, the spatial analyzer can provide clinicians with a fast, reliable method of helping patients.
