Summer carillon series concludes Tuesday 7/23/04

Stephen Schreiber, an accomplished organist and carillonneur, will give the final performance in the Wingate

Memorial Carillon Series at Alfred University at 7 p.m. Tuesday.He will open his concert, to be performed on the bells of the Davis Memorial Carillon, with "Fanfare and Rondeau" from Symphonie des Fanfares by Jean Joseph Mouret, and then offer a selection of folk songs from various countries.The program includes an offering of movie theme songs, sacred music, patriotic songs, and a number of compositions written for the carillon. He concludes his program with Abide with Me by William Monk, and a traditional Welsh tune, Ar Hyd Y Nos.Schreiber, a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 1986, presents carillon recitals throughout New England and along the East Coast. He is organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ambler, PA, a position he has held since 1997.

Originally trained as a pianist, Schreiber earned a Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College, Princeton University, where he studied the organ with Eugene Roan and church music with Hal Hopson. He also holds

bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Temple University, and a diploma in court reporting from the Court Reporting Institute in Philadelphia. He has been active as a harpsichord recitalist, an accompanist to various choral organizations and a featured recitalist for the American Guild of Organists. Schreiber did not begin his studies of the carillon until 1983 with Janet Dundore at St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh. He became a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America three years later with a performance on the Peace Tower Carillon in Ottawa, Canada.The Davis Memorial Carillon is a set of 47 tuned bells played from a console atop a 69-stair tower in the middle of the AU Campus. The Alfred University carillonneur is Laurel Buckwalter.The summer carillon series is made possible by support from the Wingate Foundation, and honors the memory of Ray Wingate, Alfred University's first carillonneur.
