With the words 'Alhamdulillahirabbil 'Alamin', the writer would like to express her praise to Allah SWT who gave her the opportunity, knowledge and strength to complete this paper entitled "Teaching Prepositions with Picture Dictation to First Grade Students of SMK". For this reason, the Indonesian government is trying to improve students' ability to use English by including English as one of the important subjects from primary school to university. So it cannot be ignored because it plays an important role; and it is one of the English competencies that students should learn to improve their English ability.
They play an important role in teaching English so the students should be able to define and identify them; and the students must also be able to demonstrate that they are used correctly in a sentence. Firstly, the students still have difficulty understanding prepositions because the students have a lack of vocabulary that prevents them from knowing the meaning of the words. Second, the students confuse the use of prepositions because some prepositions have a similar word but have a different meaning and function in a different sentence, for example the word "on".
Besides the problems coming from the students' side, they also come from the teacher's side. Based on the conditions above, the teacher must be able to handle those problems to help the students understand the material. Actually, there are many teaching techniques that can be used in teaching prepositions, such as guidelines, puzzle games, picture assignment and picture dictation to stimulate the students' interest in learning preposition.
In this paper, the author uses picture dictation as one of the techniques in teaching prepositions to the first grade students of SMK.
Identification of the Problem
Third, the teacher does not use interesting media that match the material during the teaching process. Picture dictation is an activity that describes the picture to the students, and then students copy the picture and rewrite the text according to the picture described.
Limitation of the Problems
Formulation of the Problem
Purpose of the Paper
The Nature of Preposition
It is also used before the name of buildings, towns, cities, regions, provinces, countries and continents. It is also used before the name of streets and bodies of water or place. From the explanations above, it can be concluded that preposition is a word placed in front of noun or pronoun that has the functions of connecting or modifying the words in a sentence.
The Nature of Picture Dictation
It argues that picture dictation is an activity to draw the picture according to the text they hear. So if they don't understand the language they hear, they won't be able to draw the picture well. Leong (2003) states that picture dictation engages students in all four language skills, namely listening with attention, fun and interest, speaking with confidence, reading with care and purpose and writing with accuracy.
This means that through picture dictation, students must learn one subject in integrated skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. Furthermore, Lado in Sriyanti (2006) argues that picture dictation is an active process of interpreting the audio sequences and students' analysis into a meaningful unit by reconstructing the text that the student heard in the audio stream. This means that with picture dictation the students will be active in listening to the text being dictated; and then they try to understand it because they have to rewrite the text or draw the picture according to what they hear.
In summary, picture dictation is an activity that describes the picture without showing it to the students, and then the students rewrite the text and draw the picture again according to what they hear. So by using picture dictation, students can learn the integrated skills in one go.
Teaching English at SMK
Pre-teaching Activity
During this activity, the teacher physically prepares the students to follow the learning process. In addition, the teacher asks the students some questions that connected the last topic with a new topic. Further, the teacher also explains the objective or the basic competencies to be achieved.
Whilst-teaching Activity
In this activity, there are three processes that correspond to the characteristics of the learners and the subject, namely exploration, elaboration and confirmation.
Post-teaching Activity
The application of teaching prepositions through picture dictation to the 1st grade students of SMK.
Pre-Teaching Activity
Whilst-Teaching Activity
Then there are some groups or some students who are chosen by the teacher or even volunteers who present their work. The next activity is to check the work of the students (teacher and students) together to know what their mistakes are. In recognition, the teacher gives a gift or an extra grade to the students who have done a good job to motivate them to participate in the class.
Post-Teaching Activity
Teaching Procedure 1. Pre-Teaching Activity
The teacher reads a new story related to today's topic and asks the students to take a note. The teacher asks the students the same questions as the previous questions without showing their notes, just pay attention to the picture. Teacher: "We review it again without showing your note, but pay attention to the picture, OK?".
The teacher asks the students to tell the sentences that use prepositions in the text. The teacher invites the students into pairs and gives the same picture (Appendix 3) to each pair. As a listener, you must listen to the text dictated by the speaker and then draw the picture according to the text you hear and to make it clear rename the things in your picture.
When they finish their group work, the teacher asks each group to collect their work (picture) and discuss it together. Judging is not based on the beauty of the image, but is based on how the students describe the image to their group; how students place things in the picture according to the text they hear). The teacher waits a few minutes for the students to complete their pictures; and collect them).
If they are able to place the things on their picture according to the text they hear, it means they understand the material. The teacher invites some students to present their work, and then the teacher gives additional marks. The teacher shows the original picture to the students Teacher: "Look at this picture (Appendix 4)".
Do you have any questions?". if there are questions, the teacher should explain or discuss clearly to the students).
Discussion
From the above process of teaching prepositions, he concludes that teaching prepositions with picture dictation is a good and interesting technique for students in the first grade of SMK. They must also listen carefully to the description of the picture. the speaker's description or the listener's work, the pair work is not correct because the assessment is taken from the correct use of prepositions in the picture the speaker has; for example, in a picture, the speaker describes "there are flowers by the boxes" and the listener draws the picture. so the sentence and the picture do not match. It means that the students still do not understand the lesson and the pair work is not correct.
For this reason, the teacher should clearly discuss the problems and ask the students some questions about the prepositions until it becomes clear. Moreover, in individual work, students should draw a new picture based on the teacher's picture description of the use of prepositions. In the final phase of teaching prepositions, all students must close the lesson with their own words.
Then the teacher asks the volunteer students to present their conclusion to the class; and the teacher gives the students a sticker as a reward. From the above discussion, he concludes that teaching prepositions with picture dictation for first grade students of SMK is a good and interesting technique for students' activity in the class, since all students are involved in the teaching and learning process from the first. stage to the end. First, students understand the suggestions more easily because they not only listen to the teacher's explanation, but also find it in the picture.
Second, it makes the students active in the classroom because they have to. many activities such as answering the questions; describe the picture; draw the picture; and close the lesson. Thirdly, it expects students to be creative because they have to represent the picture according to their understanding about the use of prepositions in the picture. Next, it is easy for the teacher to check students' understanding of prepositions, because if the students do not understand the prepositions used in the picture, they will not be able to draw their picture.
Therefore, teacher can check the students' understanding from the picture that the students have drawn. it is not assessment from the beauty of the picture, but how the students place things in the picture according to the description they hear). Moreover, teaching preposition through picture dictation to the first grade students of SMK also has disadvantages. This will be difficult to do for the students who do not have the ability to draw; and it will be difficult for the students who lack vocabulary.
