Judul Skripsi: Teachers' perception of the use of authentic materials to teach listening (A Descriptive Study at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar). The researcher completed his thesis entitled "Teacher's Perception on the Use of Authentic Materials to Teach Listening (A Descriptive Study at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar)", which aims to complete a partial fulfillment of the degree of Strata-1 (S1 ) at the Faculty of Teacher Education and Training in Makassar Muhammadiyah University. The researcher's beloved parents Ismail and Nurjannah and beloved sister Ratna Humaya for their endless love, support prayer, care and support both morally and financially to the researcher.

Erwin Akib, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. Director of SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar and staff who give several times to the researcher to conduct research. Thanks to all the researcher's friends in the Department of English Education, her classmates in CROWN Class.

Finally, the researcher would like to welcome constructive suggestions and criticism to make this thesis better. Teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic materials to teach listening (A Descriptive Study at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar). This study aimed to find out: (1) Types of authentic materials used by the teachers to teach listening, (2) Teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic materials to teach listening.

The researcher also found that teacher has an important role in determining the types of materials that are appropriate with learning objectives.

The use of authentic materials in English teaching has been debated since the communicative language teaching (CLT) approach emerged in the 1970s. In this era, authentic materials are cheap because the teachers do not need much money to get the materials. What kind of authentic material do the teachers use to teach listening at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar.

What are the teachers' opinions about using authentic materials to teach listening at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar. Types of authentic materials used by teachers to teach listening at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar. Teachers' perceptions of using authentic materials for teaching listening in SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar.

For teachers, the result of this research can be used as a source for teachers to investigate their perception of authentic materials in listening education. In this study, the researcher formulated the scope of the types of authentic materials in listening education (audio and singing) and teachers' perception of the use of authentic materials in listening education, namely the importance of using authentic materials in listening, the role of teachers in the use of authentic material in listening, the level of students' skills and students' performance.

This visual image of the external thing became perception when it was interpreted in the visual cortex of the brain. Thus, visual perception refers to interpreting the image of the external world projected on the retina of the eye and constructing a model of the three-dimensional world. It correlates, integrates and understands various sensations and information from many organs of the body, with the help of which a person identifies things, objects and sensations.

Each of the community learns to emphasize certain sensory inputs and ignore others. Harmer defines authentic texts, whether written or spoken, as those created for native speakers: they are real texts created not for language learners but for speakers of the language. The researcher concludes that authentic materials which are designed for native speakers are real materials which are not designed for language students but for native speakers.

According to Miller (2003), using real-time radio in the classroom is one of the most accessible forms of authentic listening practice we can give our students. Martinez (2002) explains that with the advent of the World Wide Web, teachers have access to large amounts of authentic materials. It is expected to match the target audience of the material with the type of students.

Furthermore, the content of the material should be applicable to the intellectual and maturity level of students. The length of listening texts varies depending on several factors, not least the types of listening skills being practiced and the skill level of the students. The most important function of the second language classroom is to provide students with authentic language.

Listening is one of the crucial skills in the development of foreign language competence, so there are many definitions of listening presented in different views. This process involves understanding a speaker's accent, speakers' grammar and vocabulary, and understanding the meaning. Since the learners need to interact to gain understanding, access to speakers of the language is essential.

Attention to the sound structure of the language will lead to more skilled discriminative listening. The way the speaker said it can be the key to understanding the true or intended meaning.

Conceptual Framework

Some types of authentic materials that can be applicable in teaching listening are; sound or song. Moreover, teachers' perception also influences the success of the learning process.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Population and Sample

The purpose of the observation was to discover types of authentic materials used by the teachers to teach listening. The interview guide consisted of nine questions regarding teachers' perceptions of using authentic materials in technical listening. The findings relate to the data on types of authentic materials (AMs) used by teachers to teach listening, and teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic materials to teach listening.

The outcome of this aspect was to discover types of authentic materials used by the teachers to teach listening at SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar. The result of this aspect shows that there are two types of authentic material used by the teacher, namely singing and audio. This section aims to find out teachers' perception on using authentic materials to teach listening in SMP PGRI 1 Tamalate Makassar. The data were obtained through interviews with two English teachers.

The researcher found that there are four indicators of teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic materials in teaching listening, namely the importance of using authentic materials in listening, the role of teachers in using authentic materials in listening, the level of students' abilities , student performance. Table 4.2 reveals four indicators of teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic materials in teaching listening, namely the importance of using authentic materials in listening, the role of teachers in using authentic materials in listening, the level of students' abilities and students' performance . a) The importance of using authentic material for listening. When teachers make a lesson plan, they can find out the material that can be taught using authentic materials).

The third indicator related to teachers' perception about the use of authentic materials to teach listening is level of students' ability. In this study, the researcher wants to know whether authentic materials can be used at various levels of students' ability. Based on the classroom observation, all the teachers use different types of authentic materials depending on the objectives of the lesson.

Based on the result of the analysis of teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic materials in teaching listening, it can be seen that all participants had a strong belief in the use of authentic materials in teaching listening. The teachers also stated that authentic materials can be used at all levels of students, be it education level or intelligence level. In addition, all participants in this study gave their strong beliefs about the use of authentic materials in teaching listening.

It provides a useful resource for further researchers to conduct a study on students' beliefs about the use of authentic materials to learn English. The use of authentic materials in teaching listening skills to university students: The cause of Bonga College of Teacher Education.
