The danger of smoking

What is smoking?
• Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the
resulting smoke is typically breathed in to be tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream.
• Most commonly, the substance used is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant, which have been rolled into a small rectangle of rolling paper to create a small, round cylinder called a cigarette.
• During the last 10 years, there has been a
significant increase in the number of adult
smokers by 8.8 million people, from 60.3
million in 2011 to 69.1 million smokers in 2021.
• Smoking has
negative health effects, because smoke
inhalation inherently poses challenges to various physiologic processes such as respiration.
What's In a Cigarette?
• There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When burned, cigarettes create more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are toxic.
