This study aims to find out the difficulties students face in learning English linking verbs, only focus on linguistic problems such as factors and causes that make it difficult for students to use linking verbs. It can be concluded that the difficulties encountered by the first grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar in learning English verbs can be reduced and the understanding of that material can be improved. To make students more interested in learning verbs, students should know the importance of learning linking verbs. Al-Mekhlafi and Nagaratman (2011:14) say that teaching grammar in educational institutions is the most difficult skill to teach and the most boring skill to learn.

There is a link between a student's native language and particular difficulties in learning and using English. The type of mistakes a learner typically makes in English pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary because there is interference from the native language in learning and using English. Actually, linking verbs is a common verb in a specific classification, but most of the high school students are difficult to analyze it in a sentence.

The author has observed students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar and aimed to discover that most students have difficulties in learning English grammar, especially in learning English conjugation verbs. So that, because the writer wants to investigate the difficulties faced by the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar in learning English conjugation verb.

Problem Statement

Moreover, based on the writer's experience during practice 3 at SMP Negeri 1 Sunguminasa, the writer found that school students find it difficult to analyze it in one sentence. On the other hand, previous research focused on grammatical interventions from Indonesia in English translation.

The purpose of this research is that the researcher wants to find out the problems that students face in learning linking verbs, so the researcher will now the problems in linguistic. This research was descriptive research, which aimed to describe the student's problems in learning English linking verb. To obtain the data, the researcher used direct observation method to see and describe the objective of the researcher to research about linking verb.

All the data will be processed after the students have given their answers in the Google form.

The second point is about the students' opinion about easily differentiating linking verbs in present tense and past form showed that 2 students strongly agree, 1 agree, 10 undecided, 12 disagree and 5 students strongly disagree. The fourth point is about the students' difficulty in understanding linking verbs caused by the influence of the first language. It concluded that students had difficulty understanding linking verbs caused by the influence of the first language.

The fifth item, students' opinion about easy in the translation sentence, which were linking verbs, changed. It concluded that the students lacked vocabulary, so they had difficulty understanding linking verbs. The seventh item, students' opinion about them was difficult to distinguish noun, adjective, adverb after connecting verbs in sentence.

It found that the students had difficulty distinguishing noun, adjective, adverb after linking verbs. The eight items approximate the students' opinion that they could easily distinguish ten linking verbs in a sentence. This means that the students had difficulty distinguishing the ten linking verbs in the sentence.

The eleventh item concerns the opinion of students that it is difficult to understand linking verbs because they dislike learning English. The tenth item is about students' opinion that they could easily identify and distinguish action verbs and linking verbs in the sentence. It means that most of the students had difficulty identifying and distinguishing action verbs and linking verbs in a sentence.

It concluded that students had difficulty understanding linking verbs caused by disinterest in learning grammar. The twelfth point is about the students' opinion that it was easy for them to distinguish between sentences that used and did not use linking verbs. This means that students found it difficult to distinguish between sentences that used and did not use linking verbs.
