Reading comes to the priority to be learned, this is opposite with the fact that Indonesia was ranked 69th out of 127 countries in terms of reading competence. It shows that Indonesian literacy is still low compared to other neighborhoods country that has a similar condition In other words learning language is used not just for academic needs but also for self-expression, and to express them-self students should know the meaning of each word that they have read which means they must know many vocabularies that relate to each of the texts. Therefore one of the ways to deal with this problem is by learning without learning or we called enjoyment, and poetry has been investigated by many researchers to achieve this. Poetry also provides students and teachers with the sight of spark joy feeling; that will connect the reader and the other when reading.

The aims of the research are as follow: First, to describe students’

vocabulary ability before and after being taught with poetry for enhancing student vocabulary on reading. And to find the influence of using poetry for enhancing student vocabulary on reading at SMA 3 Kediri.

The Research type of this study is qualified as quantitative research. It’s focused on the vocabulary ability that is defines as the ability to identify synonym and reference. Data collection was collect from students’ pre-test and post-test result, at the end the data are analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 20.

The students' highest score of pre-test was 78, meanwhile post-test show the highest score about 84.The result of Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test use to answer the hypothesis, Z test reveals -867 following P-value (Asymp. Sig 2 Tailed) about 0.386 or 0 386 <0.05 0, from this outcome, the writer draws a conclusion that H1 is accepted which means that there is any significant effect between pre-test and post test result.

1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter provides general descriptions of the study. Subsequently, background of the study, problem identifications, problem limitations, problem formulation, objectives of the study, and significance of the study will be presented.

A. Background of the Study

English language as an international language plays an important role as a medium of communication for individuals and unions. In addition to the presence of Industry 4.0 where every country has the same opportunity to compete with each other in the economy, technology, industry, and education fields. Learning the English language is not a single thing in education; it may entail mastering abstract principles, comprehending proofs, recalling accurate information, acquiring methods, techniques, and approaches, also rationalizing ideas, or designing behavior appropriate to a specific situation (Steve Ketteridge and Stephanie Marshall stated, 2009). The main focused skill to be learned as a student is reading, writing, speaking.

Reading comes to the priority to be learned, this is opposite with the fact that Indonesia was ranked 69th out of 127 countries in terms of reading competence, according to UNESCO only one out of a hundred people in Indonesia have an interest and loves towards reading, especially academic reading. It shows that Indonesian literacy is still low compared to other neighborhoods country that has a similar condition. While literacy itself is an achievement that rests on language

competence at all levels, from elemental sounds to the most overarching structure of the text (Moats, 2020)

In another hand learning language is used not just for academic needs but also for self-expression, especially in terms of communication. And to express them- self students should know the meaning of each word that they have read which means they must know many vocabularies that relate to each of the texts. It shows that native speakers are thought to have a recognition vocabulary of some 17,000 words, English language containing words that sometimes have the same spelling different pronunciation, or different meaning. If we spend most of our time studying grammar, our English will not improve much. We will see the most improvement if we learn more about words and expression. Therefore one of the ways to deal with this problem is by learning without learning or we called enjoyment, and poetry has been investigated by many researchers to achieve this.

According to Ollilia, B, and Jantas (2006), poetry is any type of spoken or written language that is organized rhythmically and is aimed to convey a tale or communicate any form of emotion, concept, or state of being in words. Poetry also provides students and teachers with the sight of spark joy feeling; that will connect the reader and the other when reading it.

There have been several studies using English literature in foreign language classes from listening to a writing activity. However, many teachers and students are taught that poetry is still not accessible in language class. While fundamentally poetry is just like any kind of text that is made of words, but the perception seems high because of the richness of language that the poet uses. Based on this

perception, the writer feels challenged to apply poetry as reading material in English class and to see more of the students' reaction in the teaching and learning process using poetry.

B. Identification of Problems

Due to the pandemic at the time, it was encouraged to concentrate on individual reading and writing tasks, where online learning is still predominately done rather than offline learning. The author was able to watch student activities while carrying out the internship. Many students rely more on the teacher to explain the meaning of words in the text that they do not understand, thus when combined with the outcomes of class discussions and student work, they often are unable to comprehend the context of the text they have to answer questions connected to it.

C. Limitation of The Problems

This study is limited to the following. First, it is limited to know student students vocabulary proficiency with teaching and learning using poetry reading material. And the second limitation the subject of this study which is 12 students of SMAN 3 Kediri during the first semester of 2021-2022 who have diverse score in the value of learning competence( Nilai Ketuntatasan Belajar) from the last mid-term test.

D. Formulation of the Problems

Poetry isn’t getting many teachers' or students' attention toward the English language learning process because teachers mostly find it difficult. Therefore the writers conclude the research problem this study will talk about:

1. How is students’ vocabulary ability before being taught with poetry for enhancing student vocabularies on reading at SMAN 3 Kediri?

2. How is students’ vocabulary ability after being taught with poetry for enhancing student vocabularies on reading at SMAN 3 Kediri?

3. Is there any significant influence of poetry to enhance students’ vocabulary at SMAN 3 Kediri in reading?

(16)

5

E. The Purpose of the Research

Based on the research question above, the aims of the research is as follow:

1. To describe students’ vocabulary ability before being taught with poetry for enhancing student vocabulary on reading at SMAN 3 Kediri.

2. To describe students’ vocabulary ability after being taught with poetry for enhancing student vocabulary on reading at SMAN 3 Kediri.

3. To find the influence of using poetry for enhancing student vocabulary on reading at SMA 3 Kediri.

F. Significance of the Study 1. For the learners:

The results of this study are expected to help the student increase their vocabulary proficiency

2. For the teachers:

With the hope that the results of this study could help teachers carry out language teaching and learning activities more efficiently especially those who are related in reading and vocabulary proficiency with literature.

G. Definition of the Key Term 1. Reading

Reading is the processes to see symbol that was in written form and to know what is the meaning of them in number, alphabets etc. Reading also a natural way to get information from what is written. Dealing of it Cline et.al (2006: 2) states that reading is a process of delivering meaning of the text, this process involves unraveling text.

2. Poetry

According to Nemerov, Britannica (2021), poetry is a literature that uses words chosen and grouped for their meaning, sound, and rhythm to evoke a focused imaginative awareness of perceptions or a specific emotional response.

Poetry may also be defined as the original and fundamental form of language.

3. Vocabularies

According to Hornby (2006) defines vocabulary as the collection of all the words someone knows or use in particular language, which also means that vocabulary is knowledge that always part of every language skill from listening to writing which is means that vocabularies have a huge impact in improving students’ language achievement.
