babista, a syrphus-fly

feeding alsoon

Aphis.Another
serieshe had
rearedfrom
the largepuparia of another Baccha, the larvae ofwhich had
fed
upon
the CottonAphis
(A.gossypii),and
naturallyboth
of these instances only confirmedmy
suspicions that Prof.Cook's
specieshad come from
syrphid larvaeand
notfrom
bark-lice.The
ideawas becoming
fixed inmy mind
thatPachyneuron
isnormally
a parasite of dipterous larvae of the family Syrphidaeand
its close allies,my
experiencewith
othergroups
of Chalcididaehaving
apparentlyshown me
thatspeedy
generalizations of this particular character are not rash.Subsequent
developments,however,
speedilyproved
thatno such
absolute rulecouldbe
founded,and
that, while the para sitismofPachyneuron
is notof the miscellaneousor heteroge-nous
characterfound with
Pteromalus orEupelmus,
species ofeach
ofwhich have been
bredfrom
hosts of four or five different orders, the formerfrom
larvaeand
pupae,and
the latterfrom
eggs, larvaeand
pupae ofmany
widely differing insects, yetit is also notof a uniform, unvaried character. Itmay be
said, in fact, tobe of a dualnature, its species attack ing, apparently indiscriminately, insects oftwo
entirely dis tinctand
well-defined groups, each belonging to a distinct order, and, curiouslyenough, and
very unfortunately for theeconomic
reputation of Pachyneuron, thesetwo
classes of hosts partake of themutual
relation of preyand
predator injurious insectsand
their directand
peculiarenemies
thus counterbalancing the benefitswhich
ourparasitesmight have produced had
their tastes restrictedthem
to the former class.Such
instanceshave been
veryrare inmy
experience,and
I only recallone
other in the case of Elasmus,which
attacksboth
microlepidopterous larvaeand
the Microgasterswhich
parasitize
them. These two
classes of the host-insects ofPachyneuron
are,first,the closely-relatedhomopterous
familiesCoccidtz,
Aphidida and
Psyllid<z,and
second, their predatory dipterousenemies
theSyrphida and
(inone
instance)Antho-
myiidce.
When
infestingAphididce, inno
case hasmore than one
parasite issuedfrom
a single plant-louse,but
in the caseofMr. Hubbard's anthomyiid two
specimensemerged
'from the hostpuparium,
whilewith
the largeBaccha, according toMr.
Hubbard's
published statemenf, theparasites "issuefrom
thepuparium
innumbers varying from
six to eighteen,through
anumber
of small holeswhich
theygnaw through
its topand
sides."A
glance at the specimens,however,
contradicts the latter portion of this statement, for there is butone
holein
each puparium,
allof the parasiteswhich have
issued (and there are asmany
asnine insome
cases)having
utilized theorifice
made by one hard-working
individual.The extended

todraw up from
the NationalMuseum
collection, recently rearranged athisdirectionby Mr. Ashmead, and
it is safe to saythattherenowhere
exists a collectionofMicrohymenoptera which
exhibitssuch
awealth
of bred forms. Collected specimens
are also present which,from
their labels, indicate that thespecies flyfrom February
to October, whilesuch
notes as are athand
