Definition of Hellotalk Application

Rivera, 2017 states that, Hellotalk is a conversation –based mobile assisted language app that claims to make cultural immersion, language learning, practice easy, engaging, and intuitive as it allows users to synchronously connect and chat with native speakers from all around the world. Conversation partners are able to communicate with each other via a variety of diffrent mediums, such as written text, speech- to text, recorded audio messages, video chats, and doodles.

Detailed Description

HelloTalk, with the rating of 4.3 on Google Play, is a popular language learning app on the market, the team of which is based in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. This application covers almost all the languages in the world including English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Italian, Russian, Arabic, and many other languages. Its main purpose is to connect language learners directly to native speakers and the target culture in order to facilitate language learning. This app has many different options, yet in order to access them without limitations, the premium version should be downloaded due to the limitations of its free version.

Strengths

In order to have real-life connections, HelloTalk allows its users to make free phone calls for a better and friendlier language learning experience. Through this feature, learners become familiar with casual and informal talk of the target language which is an important skill in a second language. One of the most prominent features of this app is the automatic translation feature which helps to keep conversations going. The Romanized pronunciation is additionally useful

(4)

118 especially in case of those languages which do not use Latin alphabet such as Chinese. Figure 6 shows that feature.

Weaknesses

The most considerable shortcoming of this app which needs urgent attention is the lack of motivational system to encourage learners to continue language learning with this app. Owing to the fact that there are basically no alerts from the HelloTalk team, users, especially those with less intrinsic motivation, might not attempt to regularly involve themselves in chatting in another language. Similar to many good mobile language learning applications, HelloTalk is not 100% free.

The price of VIP membership (i.e., the paid version) is fairly high as displayed in Figure 10, additionally it could be considered really unfair to have to pay for practicing any other language pairs beyond the first one.

Process : Refers to teaching and learning uses Hellotalk Application Output : Refers to the students achievement vocabulary test.

Hypothesis

The researcher was conducts to test the following hypothesis:

1.Null Hypothesis (H0): HelloTalk Application cannot improve students vocabulary .

2.Alternative Hypothesis (H1): HelloTalk Application can improve students vocabulary.

(6)

120 METHOD

In this research, the research used pre-experimental design. Gay and Airasian (2012), stated that pre-experimental design does a very good job of controlling extraneous variables that jeopardize validity. In pre-experimental design the researcher used-one group of pretest, treatment and post-test. Pre-experimental design aimed to know whether Hellotalk Application could implementation in teaching vocabulary or not.

This research consists of two variables. They were independent and dependent variable. Independent variable was Hellotalk Application while dependent variable was students vocabulary.

The population of the research was the second grade students of SMP YP 4 PGRI Makassar in academic 2021-2022. it consist of 40 students. So the total number of population is 40 students.

The technique of sampling used in this research was random sampling . The researcher choose class VIII . The class consist of 20 students. The reason why the researcher took this class because the students vocabulary is low.

The researcher used a test as an instrument. Both pre-test and post-test consisted of 40 items. This is a multiple choice test and matching. The pre-test used to know the students prior knowledge about vocabulary, while the post-test used to know the students vocabulary after giving the treatment by using Hellotalk Application.

The content of pre-test was the same as the content of post-test in order to get valid different result.

The measure of students vocabulary test in pre-test and post-test refering to the scoring system as in the following:

To assess the pre-test and post-test result of students answer:

1. The students correct a nswer = 1 2. The students wrong answer = 0

Score =

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑤𝑒𝑟

𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 × 100 Calculating the result of the test

To assess the varying significance between the pre-test score and post-test, test value was determined using the following formula:

t =

𝐷

√∑𝐷 2− 𝑁 (𝑁−1 )(∑𝐷)2𝑁

Where:

t : Test of significance D : Score shange

∑D : The sum of different score

Gay, (2012) Findings and Discussion

Findings

In order to answer the question research in the previous chapter, the researcher had conducted the research and collected all data by using the data collecting. The findings of this research deal with the students’ score of pre-test and post-test, the mean scores of students’ score of pre-test and post-test, the frequency and rate percentage of students’ score in pre-test and post-test, the mean scores of students result, significant difference and hypothesis testing. The researcher had done the research with gain the data by instrument.

The Students Score of Pre-test (X) and Post-test (Y)

It has been stated in the previous chapter that the data were collected through result of the pre-test and the post-test. The research results aims to find out the answer of the research question in the previous chapter. The researcher found that the students score in pre-test shows that students get difficulties in answering the test. It might be caused by the students’ motivation in learning English. The other reason might happen because the students’ vocabulary very low. By applying Hellotalk Application the students should not only memorize the words but also can identify the words into its parts. Therefore, the researcher did the treatment to resolve those problems.
