THE NOCTUID MOTHS OF THE GENERA PALINDIA AND
DYO]\IYX.
By Harrison

Custodian of Lepidoptera, United States NationalMuseum.
These strikingly colored Noctuids have long been favorites with collectors.
They
arebestknown
underthename
PalindiaofGuenee.The
DyowAjx have beengenerally associated withthe Palindia, and
are apparently allied.
Dyomyx
has a verylongthhd
joint to the palpiandpresentsnoneofthe modificationsof thehmd
tibiseofthe male, so general in Palindia. Some
of the species have been fre- quently interchanged between the genera. The
firstspecies ofPalindiamade known
wereby
Cramer, under the general termsPhals&na Noctua andPhalsena Geometra. Hiibner rangedthem m
two genera, Eulepidotis and Phrygionis.The
type ofthelatterisgenerallyconsideredto becuUariaHiibner (=
politata StoU, not poUtia Cramer), the first species, a Geometrid. Of the former, the typeis ilyriasCramer, thefirstspecies, fixedby
Butler (1892), a Palindia. Guenee next established PalindiaandDyojnyx.Walker
made
nonew
generain thisgroup. Butler divided Palindia in threepai'ts, using Eulepidotis for the green ones, Palindia for the white ones, and Phrygionis for the yellowones.Bar
placedthem
allinPalindia,includedDyomyx
as closely related, ifnota sub- genus, but separated the species with curved outer lineunder thename
Calydia.The
species will be treated here as doneby Guenee
under two names, but it will be necessary to substitute the older Eulepidotis forPalindia.Threespecieshave beenreportedintheUnitedStates, Eulepidotis dominicataGuenee fromsouthern Texas, whereit
may
even beestab- lished, E.miccaDruce, recently reportedfrom Texas by Barnesand McDunnough, and Dyomyx
merricki Holland from Pennsylvania, whereitwas
probablyaccidentallyimportedontropicalfruit.Nothingis
