REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The Concept of Grammar

  • Definition of Grammar
  • The Importance of Grammar

Gatenby and Wakefiled state that grammar is the study of the word forms and how they are put together in sentences, the rules about using words. Swan argues that grammar is the rules governing how words change to reflect different meaning and how they are combined into sentences. Conlin and Herman argue that grammar is the study of the form and function in the communication of the groups of words that make up sentences. Based on the above definitions, it can be concluded that grammar is the study of language rules pertaining to the way the words are arranged. in good sentences.

Since knowledge of grammar is essential to the use of a language, it is clearly necessary to learn it. Students cannot use words unless they know how the words should be put together, (Harmer, 1991: 22). Rasyid in Nurmayani (2011: 9) states that without learning the grammatical structure, the main aspects of the English language cannot be mastered.

The Concept of Pronoun

  • The Meaning of Pronoun
  • The Rule to Make Pronoun
  • The Kinds of Pronoun

This can happen even if the intervening material is logically related to the rest of the sentence. We'd write, "I'm taking an Asian history class"; if Talitha is also taking that course, we would write: "Talitha and I are taking an Asian history course." (Note that Talitha is mentioned before 'me'. This is one of the few ways English is a 'polite' language.) The same is true when the object form is asked: 'Professor Vendetti gave all her books to me' if Talitha also received some books, we would write: 'Professor Vendetti has given all her books to Talitha and me.' For more information on this, see cases of pronouns When a pronoun and a noun are combined (which happens with the first and second person plural pronouns), choose the case of the pronoun that would be appropriate if the noun were not capable of.

One of the biggest difficulties we have with the indefinite pronouns is that "everyone" feels like it refers to more than one person, but it requires a singular verb (Everyone is included). See the section on Pronoun Consistency for help determining the number of the indefinite pronouns (and the number [singular/ . plural] of the verbs that accompany them). The most common use of the reflexive pronoun is an object that reflects back to the subject.

The Concept of Demonstrative Pronoun

Demonstrative pronouns are used to replace specific people or things previously mentioned (or understood from context). A demonstrative pronoun tells us whether it replaces something singular or plural and whether that thing(s) is near or further away.

The Concept of Descriptive Research

  • Definition of Descriptive Research
  • Process of Descriptive Research
  • Categories of Descriptive Research

The descriptive method in general and specific types of descriptive research in particular will be discussed in more detail for two main reasons. Descriptive research sounds very simple; however, this is much more than just asking questions and reporting the answers. It involves the same basic procedures as in other research methods, and each component must be just as conscientiously executed: for example, the sample must be carefully selected.

For example, self-report surveys, such as those using questionnaires or interviews, often suffer from non-response; many subjects do not return mailed questionnaires or participate in scheduled interviews. In these situations, it is very difficult to interpret results, as individuals who do not respond may feel very differently from those who do. Observers must be trained and recording forms developed so that data are collected objectively and reliably.

Of course, if there is a valid, reliable instrument available, it can be used, but using an instrument just "because it's there" is not a good idea. If instrument development is necessary, the instrument should be tested and retested where necessary before it is used in the study itself. A major problem that further complicates descriptive research is the non-response of the subject who must return questionnaires or participate in scheduled interviews.

But a logical way to initially categorize them is in relation to how data is collected, through self-report or observation. In a self-report survey, information is obtained from individuals using, for example, questionnaires, interviews or standardized attitude scales. These two categories are of course not mutually exclusive; a self-report survey may involve observation and vice versa.

A case study, for example, is primarily observational in that information is gathered about an individual or group.

THE METHOD OF THE RESEARCH METHOD

Research Variables

Population and Sample

The researcher determined all second-year students, so the total number of subjects in this study is 26 students.

Instrument of the Research

It means that on 86 test items, the students made mistakes or incorrect answers on 182 test items when using the demonstrative pronoun 'this'. It means that there were 68 items that the students tested and made mistakes when using demonstrative pronouns. Otherwise, when using the demonstrative pronoun 'that' there were 72 items correct and 58 items incorrect answer.

The researcher concluded that the students had difficulty using demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those) in response categories. The frequency and percentage of problems using the demonstrative pronoun of each question in the questionnaire. The table above shows that 2 students (7.69%) were classified as Strongly Agree with the Student's difficulties in using demonstrative pronouns with noun, and 1 student (3.85%) was classified as Agree .

The above table shows that 2 students (7.69%) are classified as Strongly Agree that Students' difficulties in understanding the demonstrative pronoun due to the first language, and 5 students (19.23%) are classified as Agree and Disagree I completely agree. Based on the students' answers, there were 12 students who had difficulties in learning the demonstrative pronoun. After doing this, the researcher was able to measure students' difficulties in using the demonstrative pronoun.

The researcher concluded that almost all students had difficulty using demonstrative pronouns. The students also encountered problems with the use of demonstrative pronouns used in the sentence. Based on the result of the given questionnaire, some aspects made it difficult for the students to use the demonstrative pronoun (this, that, these and those) in the sentences.

The English teacher should give the students practice in using Demonstrative pronouns in sentences. It is important for the students to be used to using Demonstrative pronoun correctly in context.

Discussions

  • Objective test
  • Questionnaire

All students answered that they had never met the demonstrative pronoun and did not know it. In this case, the researcher would explain about the demonstrative pronoun after hearing the students' response that they had never been taught the demonstrative pronoun. According to the researcher's explanation, all students understood the meaning of the demonstrative pronoun.

According to seven students who almost got the answer right, they generally just mentioned some demonstrative pronouns. Almost of the students answered that they were not able to when the teacher asked them to make a sentence using demonstrative pronoun. Almost all students did not know when the types of demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these and those) were used.

They just replied with the same answer to the question 'what are the differences between using demonstrative pronouns'. The problems were caused by the students having less understanding of the demonstrative pronoun because they had never learned about it before. It was proven when the researcher asked them to make a sentence using demonstrative pronouns.

It means that the test with 68 items caused students to make mistakes, and in the use of the demonstrative pronoun ―these‖ there were 7 test items of the correct answer and 97 test items that students made mistakes or encountered difficulties (See the appendix). Some of the students sometimes did not understand the meaning or use of the demonstrative pronoun. According to Resmiawati (1999) concluded the students of SLTPN I Parangloe Gowa faced difficulties in using the demonstrative pronoun. Based on the objective test result given, Second Year Students of SMP Aisyiah Sugguminasa are difficult in using the demonstrative pronoun (this, he, these and they).

In addition, after the students explained about demonstrative pronoun (this, that, these, those) the students answer of objective test and fill in the questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire shows that 65.38% students feel easy to use demonstrative pronoun and help them to understand the material.
